I am a student at VFS and the fact these comments are even on here are insulting, this is a model reel from a student and why people feel the need to fight over religion on youtube is beyond me.

My favourite video has been taken down, it was about a blue guy that said a joke and did all soar of stupid thing to make another laugh, and does when the first one cracks up a fart... Made me realize that the best videos are made with a great concept. I love this one because it has a great technique and inspires me to grab my Max Studio and try to do something similar. These thins make me believe and did, years ago, when I saw the firt video, that VFS is my paradise.
I wish i had the passion i had for animation in highschol as i do now...i wouldn't be in community college thats for sure but better late than never...but never late is better...i guess
I like the fact that the beast has testicles... Most designers are afraid of placing reproductive organs, but they are a natural part of the body, and they give more realism.
I also think it's extremely rude to bash someone for thanking God in their video. He does amazing work and, although I don't agree with his beliefs, he's one hell of a good artist.

I've only been using blender for about 3weeks now and can animate, make simple games, and model just about anything i see. So, it is all about dedication. Never say never.
this is prob the only copy of my reel that survived since my portable HD died alone with these models, too bad this version has crappy quality and is missing the last model :O

Hi zoomaki. I appreciate the questions you asked. It is believed that the first humans, lived for a period of a few hundreds of years individually e.g Adam = 900 years. So Adam and Eve had many children (Chain could of married e.g 8 generations apart from his). something to note he didn't sleep with his mother. @Esoremada Too bad the Bible doesn't even agree with them. There is no Hell--there is only described "gehenna." "Christians" are wrong about that doctrine you attack. Also, you're wrong--you need rules (universal principles) to govern morals, otherwise, all morals are relative and can't be consider real "morals" at all--your say-so and the popular vote becomes morals. There's no hope for being right without some kind of truly universal standard. Neither atheists or "Christians" follow such.
I like to think that morals come naturally to most humans. If I wasn't told by my parents that rape and murder was wrong I would still come to that conclusion on my own, I have an innate sense of right and wrong. If I do something to hurt another person I feel guilt, and so do most people, that's morals.

Yes it is possible, and the job would be a Maquette builder. But you don't use clay you use Super Sculpey both firm and soft with a foil and metal armature underneath for support. It's best to get in education in sculpture art, they teach it to animation students mostly. Understand that, unlike normal clay, you don't use water to mold the form, you use turpenoid, because the sculpey is oil based clay. It doesn't hardens till you cook it, so it's really easy to mess up.
Really nice work on this Demo Reel. The models have many realistic characteristics and are quite smoothly made. I was wondering if someone, by any chance, would know the name of the music present in this video.

@BinaryPhoenix Careful now ;) Wouln't want to become a software expert. One would want to learn how to become an artist, utilizing the concepts and idea's, and applying them to best fit what you have to work with.
Also, have you ever tried getting the same shader detail in blender? One doesn't need professional software, to be "Professional" ;)
that's not completely true . some people tend to model real high res models in a sculpting program like z brush without knowing how to box model effectively and they just sculpt it like clay without putting to account of how much resources are being used on the computer for each polygon. and they never practice to box model well. so when they make a low poly version of their model and add the normal map, the model still look blocky.
no trust me im in a class full of artists but they dont really understand how or why they should even make anything with less than a million poly's then they wonder y when they bring there meshes into a program like max or maya y it either freezes, crashes or goes super slow. I think everyone who goes into zbrush could do with leaning a goos basis of box modeling in another software so they get to terms with better edge loops and so on.

That's not the greatest animation. Haven't you people seen movies? I'll give you some examples: Pirates of the Caribbean (Davy Jones), The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. (Aslan, the lion)
This isn't an animation reel - It's a modeling reel. This demonstrates the artist's ability to capture a character in a frozen environment, not to move it around.
The turnarounds are merely there so that the audience can see the entire model. : )
It looks good but I'm noticing a pattern here. It seems like all VFS students are only good at high poly modeling and animation. none of the low poly art I've seen was really that good. Is your "game design" program not very good or is the students' work just not that great? I'm a little more interested in efficient low poly modeling, UV mapping and texturing using engine limitations...and I haven't seen anything impressive in that regard on the VFS website.
I'm not a pro, nor do I understand VFS's approach to their students but here's my theory
VFS is a film school. Animation is a kind of film. Low poly is essential for games because of the interactivity aspect, but movies are more render-heavy. Games use textures, normal, bump, spec maps, etc to capture detail that their poly limit won't allow. Whereas in film, capturing detail through polys (in addition to maps) make them look 10x better than in games.
Yeah, I know how 3D graphics work. :) It just surprises me that a school with a game design program doesn't seem to actually teach anything game-related...unless you count cinematics, which are not actually part of gameplay. High poly models are great and all, but it's a lot less impressive when you see that it takes people months to make one model.
question: do you have to be a realy great artisit with your hands to get into this school?, because I'm not a great artist but would love to do animation work.

dude its a modelling reel, this guy is being marked on his topology and mesh and edge loop flow and also making sure his mesh consists of quads which gives his topology a good flow especially wen animating. You say its boring well dude if your looking for exxcitment den u r watching the wrong type of reel its modelling not texturing or animating or lighting, jst a good model on a turntable with a good uv layout. And i give this a 10 out of 10 in term of modelling.
check out some other reels..dude..this is way boring..and i mean modelling reels..were in u dont repeat scenes many times..but also keep each scene long enough..that one can really look into details..i say again..i never said the wrk ws bad. and plz dnt get exited and type a page long comment..this is not a debate.
If u r modeling a character in a modeling and texturing reel, then u r required to just hav a 360 turn around of your model with the same shots, this way the industry panel can see the flow of his topology and mesh throughout his model, this guy would get a job in the 3d industry hands down, coz u either specialize in modeling and texturing or rigging and animating or lighting etc, so i guess this guy wanted to specialize in modeling and texturing.
And also sombodi else would specialize in camera hots in the industry, so in the industry he would model and texture the character and then give it to the riggers to animate and they would give it to the lighters and then to the camera specialist. But if he modeled an environment it would go straight to the lighters and then to the camera guys or girls.

you guys are idiots. firstly i was in stevens class, hes brilliant. his modeling reel set a new standard for modeling reels at VFS. he now works at blizzard cinematics, its hard to find someone who is as talented and a good person as he is. if you post a bad comment on this all you do is show how little you know about 3d, and what it is to be a 3d STUDENT in this industry.

Hi zoomaki. I appreciate the questions you asked. It is believed that the first humans, lived for a period of a few hundreds of years individually e.g Adam = 900 years. So Adam and Eve had many children (Chain could of married e.g 8 generations apart from his). something to note he didn't sleep with his mother. I like to think that morals come naturally to most humans. If I wasn't told by my parents that rape and murder was wrong I would still come to that conclusion on my own, I have an innate sense of right and wrong. If I do something to hurt another person I feel guilt, and so do most people, that's morals.
And hell is referenced a lot in the bible.
eg. Matthew 13:42: "And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth."

I have a serious answer:
Yes it is possible, and the job would be a Maquette builder. But you don't use clay you use Super Sculpey both firm and soft with a foil and metal armature underneath for support. It's best to get in education in sculpture art, they teach it to animation students mostly. Understand that, unlike normal clay, you don't use water to mold the form, you use turpenoid, because the sculpey is oil based clay. It doesn't hardens till you cook it, so it's really easy to mess up.

Download Blender3D, Gimp, student versions of software and more if you can. Really dig into it and you'll be able to get the hang of it. :)

that's not completely true . some people tend to model real high res models in a sculpting program like z brush without knowing how to box model effectively and they just sculpt it like clay without putting to account of how much resources are being used on the computer for each polygon. and they never practice to box model well. so when they make a low poly version of their model and add the normal map, the model still look blocky.

no trust me im in a class full of artists but they dont really understand how or why they should even make anything with less than a million poly's then they wonder y when they bring there meshes into a program like max or maya y it either freezes, crashes or goes super slow. I think everyone who goes into zbrush could do with leaning a goos basis of box modeling in another software so they get to terms with better edge loops and so on.

why not just retopologize the model in zbrush? with the correct edge loops/ polyflow..
that way the mesh is even correct as lowpoly mesh (games) in terms of keeping details when using a normalmap . .

This isn't an animation reel - It's a modeling reel. This demonstrates the artist's ability to capture a character in a frozen environment, not to move it around.
The turnarounds are merely there so that the audience can see the entire model. : )

It looks good but I'm noticing a pattern here. It seems like all VFS students are only good at high poly modeling and animation. none of the low poly art I've seen was really that good. Is your "game design" program not very good or is the students' work just not that great? I'm a little more interested in efficient low poly modeling, UV mapping and texturing using engine limitations...and I haven't seen anything impressive in that regard on the VFS website.

I'm not a pro, nor do I understand VFS's approach to their students but here's my theory
VFS is a film school. Animation is a kind of film. Low poly is essential for games because of the interactivity aspect, but movies are more render-heavy. Games use textures, normal, bump, spec maps, etc to capture detail that their poly limit won't allow. Whereas in film, capturing detail through polys (in addition to maps) make them look 10x better than in games.

Yeah, I know how 3D graphics work. :) It just surprises me that a school with a game design program doesn't seem to actually teach anything game-related...unless you count cinematics, which are not actually part of gameplay. High poly models are great and all, but it's a lot less impressive when you see that it takes people months to make one model.

dude its a modelling reel, this guy is being marked on his topology and mesh and edge loop flow and also making sure his mesh consists of quads which gives his topology a good flow especially wen animating. You say its boring well dude if your looking for exxcitment den u r watching the wrong type of reel its modelling not texturing or animating or lighting, jst a good model on a turntable with a good uv layout. And i give this a 10 out of 10 in term of modelling.

If u r modeling a character in a modeling and texturing reel, then u r required to just hav a 360 turn around of your model with the same shots, this way the industry panel can see the flow of his topology and mesh throughout his model, this guy would get a job in the 3d industry hands down, coz u either specialize in modeling and texturing or rigging and animating or lighting etc, so i guess this guy wanted to specialize in modeling and texturing.

And also sombodi else would specialize in camera hots in the industry, so in the industry he would model and texture the character and then give it to the riggers to animate and they would give it to the lighters and then to the camera specialist. But if he modeled an environment it would go straight to the lighters and then to the camera guys or girls.

you guys are idiots. firstly i was in stevens class, hes brilliant. his modeling reel set a new standard for modeling reels at VFS. he now works at blizzard cinematics, its hard to find someone who is as talented and a good person as he is. if you post a bad comment on this all you do is show how little you know about 3d, and what it is to be a 3d STUDENT in this industry.
