These things scare the crap out of me and I run everytime I see them, and today I saw a wasp about the size of a freaking small bird and that's huge for a wasp
@binturong1000 Because the males' sole job is to reproduce... they have no other purpose. Same with pretty much any type of bee. In a honey bee hive, the drones (males) are useless; they just sit around and eat, and then eventually go reproduce with a queen from another colony. And to everyone else on this page, bees are the best things ever!!! No life loving bee wants to sting you so don't be afraid.
@AgileHProductions these look nothing like the ones in my back yard there like the size of the my upper thumb and there black all black its like taking three of these and making them one
Very Informative and very Nice! I was looking around wikipedia because I just recorded a bee and Its a carpenter alright! I guess it was getting pollen for her nest I didn't get too close tho because I thot it would sting me. I would usually run very far away from these bees. At a young Age I used to be scared of them. But Now not soo much I was just curios and I've never seen one pollinate truly amazing insects! If you look closely you can see the amazing fine detail in their wings and abdomen!
Found one of these on my porch while doing yoga... usually I'm not scared off by the insects and stuff out there but I had never seen a bee that big and didn't know what it was. I went back inside scared, lol. I think I'll go back out there though. :P I'm just doing yoga, I'm sure the bee and I can live in harmony. :)
@whackowitch These definitely won't hurt you if you aren't aggressive towards them. They are actually a really good be to see up close because they are so passive. (My legal team tells me that's bad advice to give :} ).
one time when i was little i was riding my bike down this little path we hade around the hous with flowers and trees on when it was time for me to keep going strait i seen this bee on a flower just flying there looking at me an the way i know it was looking at me is becuz i got prob 3 inches away from his body and my eye..to say the least i did a skide stop turned down the side path and peddled as fast as i can...ITS FACE WAS LIKE BITCH WHAT U GONNA DO?....my responce.peddle the hell out of here
@TheRadioIsBroken they aren't agressive at all only unless u mess with the nest and they are known to follow people because they are very curious, usually males do the following....but no they aren't agressive
I had a guest at my home make a speedy retreat to her car when pestered by these bees - there are a 1/2 holes underneath bracing on a nearby fence. The fence is pressure treated wood with several layers of oil based paint - so that disuades them. These pesky bees buzz around your head annoyingly. I find an enlarged-type fly-swatter is good. The tunnels the females burrow into the wood can be 10 feet long, so destructive. Sorry, but when it comes to my guests vs. insects, the guests comes first.
No the males don't sting at all due to them not having a stinger at all but the female can sting you. To distinguish the male from the female is easy. The male has a yellow spot on their face and the female doesn't. It's pretty rare to see the female outside it's nest so the ones you see flying around are usually the males.
@AgileHProductions They're absolute assholes when they're dying. I always get aggressive ones in my basement, and just this morning I was stung while sitting still. Oddly enough I was just sitting there - I wouldn't have moved had I not been stung. Seems they show up in my home to die and surprise me.
Females - YES What I've learned about carpenter bees is not to bother it when it is around you. It is simply checking you out and no means to attack. Toss a penny or small pebble in front of the bee and watch it chase it like a dog. It's pretty entertaining.... =)
The females can sting severely if provoked. The males are less aggressive and possess no stingers. The stings of a female carpenter bee are as painful as that of a bald-faced hornet or yellow jacket.
@uptownbronze Females are the only ones between the two sexes that can sting but as AgileHProductions states, carpenter bees are are not aggressive. They are fairly docile. Males do not have stingers. Therefore, the males are harmless.
@69mrcrash Generally, these are pretty docile bees. Were you provoking it?

Carpenter Bees are Very Agressive!
A couple of them have drilled a few holes in the cedar Eaves of my house.
They hover around the holes and chase anything that gets near them (people , birds , butterflies , a leaf blowing in the wind)
They get right in your face and even bump into you , and if you run , they will follow you.
They even go after my dog (my dog just tries to bite them)
I dont know which one stings..I just kill them.
