ahh they know who you are it's amazing there tiny little brains can comprehend all that stuff my huge koi loves me and was depressed when his buddies died but now he just picks on my channel catfish
r they all that friendly????? cuz if so im gonna get some im also either gonna build a pong or since they only get as big as there tank buy a 55 gallon tank :)
where do u get this Tetra Koi Treats cuz i need to find some that help grow my little koi up to inches a year with out sending a large amount of cash and time
You can go to any of the pond sites on the internet type in Koi Treats on Google and you will see them. But they are expensive and you only use them as treats. The regular food that I use is just from Tetra for spring and fall and then use a summer one that is less protein.
@Firagax2 But the enjoyment of hearing the waterfall or fountain is amazing. No matter how hot it is outside when you hear running water and see your fish it really is refreshing! My koi that I bought 7 years ago are about 30 inches or so now!
It isnt costly really, however there are chemicals that need to be used which can depending on what you think is expensive be expensive for some budgets. You must add chemicals (if you have tap water) each time you do a water change or add fish. You need a good pump and filter adequately sized to your pond or larger, a UV light (good filters include these inside them) (a really good one is tetrapond with a UV) and mine is for 4000 gallons and was about 300.00. Algae chemicals if needed .
chemicals to sterilize what? The pond is an ego system that you have to manage. Using UV lights in a filter keep the green floating algae from taking over the pond, however the only thing that will keep the string algae (our problem still) is the use of barley juice products. Other than that your water should be crystal clear if you use these items. I try to stay away from chemicals that arent natural in my pond, always afraid that it will harm the fish. Read labels carefully!!!!!
Yes of course, they have little babies that the other fish will eat. So there should be lots of roots hanging down from floating plant material for them to hide in. If Goldfish and Koi mate the babies are an ugly grey color.
@karenmac2 That actually happened to me :) I had to care care of a Greyish Goldfish that was HUGE in my tank a month ago. I was wondering why it was colored that way~
really simple if u really want to hand feed, its very basic but could take time, don't try too hard because they might not eat from ur hand the first time but if you feed them daily from same spot and make no noise you are making progress! remember just don't try too hard let it come naturally!
actually I have trained mine by not being quiet, but by tapping on the side of the pond and then putting food in. It took time for them to realize that the tapping sound meant food, but they learned this and come flying from everywhere in the pond to the spot where I am when they hear the tapping! Like Pavlovs dogs only KOI>>>>
If you use the koi treats they cant help but eventually come up and start to hand feed. They love those things...
It is so funny to hear the noise they make as they come after it in your hand and you can look right in their blue eyes!!
They come to the side of the pond where I am now everytime I tap the side and they hear the vibration they all come flying to where I am... really neat! Good luck and keep hand feeding those koi!!
it took a long time, I finally decided that since they had been scared by a great blue heron when it appeared, that I would sit by the side of the pond quietly and then tap the side quietly, but the vibration they feel... and put in a few pellets of food. Then pull my hand away, then they would come and eat it, then repeat this until they were no longer bothered by my hand there. And those koi treats really are too yummy for them to resist!!
I am in Virginia. We have alot of ponds in the community so they do live here. After putting the lattice (plastic panels) over the pond with wooden supports when I wasnt home, that helped alot. I hate those heron, it was so awful to see that prehistoric looking thing just poking at my beautiful koi. I also bought three of those Koi Kastles that they can hide in and that helped also! And they like it for protection and shade..
My mother kept missing her koi - every day or so, after she had put in the new pond, a koi would come up missing. They were used to hand feeding and she caught the culprit one day in the act of fishing out one of her fish - it was her white poodle - so she had to fence the pond off.
