Yep. They have done it and will continue to do it. Anybody that doesn't realize the for-profit insurance companies have to be taken out of the health care equation is either stupid or naive. Let your elected representatives know you want single payer, or at the very least, a public choice.
The insurance and health care industries have some of the highest paid executives in America. What they deliver for shareholders is profit, what they deliver to consumers is rationed care, geared to maximize profit.
This scenario has not played out well in real time. It has left families bankrupt and many illnesses untended. It has caused millions of us to deny ourselves needed medical care.
It is clear we need a strong public health care option to protect the health of our nation.
Once again the insurance Companies get what they want and the rest of us get no health care. I'm also getting tired of hearing the same, tired excuses from my Dem leaders.
I have heard that Coca Cola will have a diet soda sweetend with Stevia...a plant dirivative that has health benifits instead the toxic artificial sweetners now in use ..
Life should be beyond the grasp of capitalism. Holding a person's health for ransom, forcing them to destroy their entire infrastructure in order not to die is the grossest of transgressions against decency. Even "big picture", how can creating broken, dependent people be for the common good? "I'm doing fine but it's still more important that you pay me than that you live." What kind of community conscience is that? That this attitude is an acceptable side effect of capitalism horrifies me.
If "socialist" government health care is so horrible, I call on all Congress members to give up their taxpayer-funded government health care plans.
If a strong public option is too expensive for working, voting American taxpayers, then it is too expensive for us to provide for our elected officials, the Political Aristocrats.
It is outrageous that we pay for their platinum health care, while they argue letting us "have" what they already have!
these guys count on the fact that a significante number of the denied claims won't / or don't know how, to go through the legal system to fight the rejection.
I've tried really hard to not curse as much on this but I have to say...
These MOTHERFUCKING insurance companies. First we have AIG and now it's coming out just how fucked up these health insurance bastards are. People call this health care?
They are bleeding people for money and when someone needs real help, they drop you.
We need not only to have government health insurance but we need to outlaw private health insurance.
I think it is impossible to shut them down. Unfortunately Obama's action can justify it. Instead of letting the corrupt financial market bleed to death and keep the small buisnesses to live he dumps a shit load of money which the government does not own. Once again everythign in America is monoploized even someone's health. The insurance company control over american citizen's healthcare is can be easily compared to the religous fanatics controlling women over the issue of abortion.
For example, look at a "little movie" called King Corn..let everybody know who listened acknowledge the HFCS risks...
Well, I went to the store this week and now there's a drink called Pepsi "throwback" with...real sugar! And there was only a total of three 12 paks left.
The HFCS Pepsi soda is sitting there, all of it...no one wants it, needs it, and more importantly not buying it.
It's called regulation and its necessary for the govt to implement some to restrain companies from begging borrowing or stealing as much money as they can. They are for-profit companies that have no morals and will use the capitalistic system to its full advantage until they are given boundaries through regulation by the govt. Lets get some order back in this
I'm delighted your nation is smarter than the French,Brits, Italians, Scandinavian nations and Canada.
Our Universal Hath Care systems are pathetic - over 60% of our bankruptcies are caused by the cost of Health Care, we have higher childhood mortality rates than the US, we all live less long than Americans and we pay TWICE as much per-capita as do you clever Americans...
What's that?...Oh my dear, I got all those stats backwards - you're the morons not us. Silly me.
The Americans are not morons (well, if they don't call their congress people to demand public health care they might be), they're being taken for a ride. They're gullible because too many of them believe the lies the Republicans are putting out there. But they're not morons. I feel very sorry for them.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
everything is legal, I don't see any problem. People need to read the contracts and understand them, or there should be a consumer rights agency reviewing all the contracts and explaining them to people. But these insurance companies have done nothing wrong. People, rule of thumb, if you don't understand a contract, don't sign it. If more people practiced that, these companies would be more forthcoming or out of business.
This certainly destroys the talking point of the scary government bureaucrat.. jeez, that sounds wonderful compared to these leeches. Beware the recession. It will be used as an argument to keep these bloodsuckers in business. It will be used as an argument against all good reform.
Peoples lives should not be on a for profit basis. This is part of the no-regulation madness that brought down the Aerican economy. Why has America no longer the best quality of life in the world? Answer: The most expenisve health insurance system in the world with the least peace of mind or coverage. The cost is due to these jerks and their refusal to give value for money and the governments refusal to require them to.
Health insurance is not health coverage. If the Dems kowtow to the spreadsheet murderers while setting up their health plan, they're not getting my support anymore.
What weasels! those private health insurance company execs are. And Congress and Obama want to force us to buy policies from them. We are being screwed!
We need Single Payer and get these insurers out of the mix!
Why is it so hard for some people to understand that private insurers' first concern is NOT for its subscribers, but for making a profit 'by whatever means necessary'? These weasels are prime examples of the "ethical culture" that rules any for-profit insurance company.
This is precisely why 'We the People' need a single-payer system! Call it socialized medicine or whatever you want; but it will pay for itself and will be accountable to US. We have socialized police forces, socialized fire d
In the 50's and 60's CEO's of companies earned about 50 times more in salary than the average worker. The CEO of UnitedHealth Group earned 124 million in 2005 - almost 3000 times the salary of the average worker. Insurance companies are the middle man between health care and patients. The cut they are taking to be the middle man is obscene.
The unborn disease is just as precious to the insurance bottom-liners as the unborn fetus is to the antiabortion hard-liners. A living, breathing, sentient adult just can't compete!
Uh- if we accept certain rights to be inalienable, such as "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," then how can it be that the means of securing those rights are not fundamental? We recognize this in employment, in housing, in access to loans. Yet some would say that health insurance, a means of securing "life" and a vector by which one may pursue happiness is not a basic human right? You're either a liar, who do not believe the fundamentals of our founding documents if you believe such
These insurance companies have no conscience. It's flat-out fucking greed! Everyone: Get off your fat asses and call your Senators. Tell them you want a Public Healthcare Option with no triggers, no co-ops, no gimmicks! Healthcare is a basic human right. It's about decency - not money! Send these greedy fucking bastards a message. Call your Senators now!
These people are truly disgusting. How do they sleep at night? What kind of values are they conveying to their children? In fact, are they capable of having human relationships?
This health care reform is a major major pivot point for me...my 1st ever vote for Pres was Clinton '92, largely with health reform in mind (seeing the burdens on my family).
Between Bush v Gore, Enron, war lies, torture, Katrina, and the wiretapping/evidence destruction, part of my faith in democracy died.
Now, with the gutlessness of Congressional Dems & this soul-sucking 'everpurple' changeless change from Obama, I'm losing what's left.
Americans better decide whether they want to make sure everyone want receives quality health care or to make sure the big insurance companies and their CEOs are paid Billions of dollars to prevent Americans from getting quality health care.
Don't allow these people to confuse you. We need a Pubic option and to never allow these insurance companies to deny health care to any American....Ever.
Americans need to remember those in Congress who put politics and donations from insurance companies to their campaigns, over people. We must hold each member of Congress accountable during their next respective re-elections and organize a campaign to defeat these narcissistic politicians. There must be a price for these idiots to pay for turning their backs on hardworking, taxpaying American families.
Gosh...I trust these guys FAR MORE than some "government bureaucrat". It's quite clear that they are far more concerned about my heath than a "government bureaucrat" that is held accountable to taxpayers.
i play 8 tables on pokerstars every day worked harder to become a winning player than i did to graduate from william and mary or pass the cali bar exam...the gov't made my check bounce last week. look it up. i got no health insurance. i love obama, voted for him, got his t-shirt. if he doesnt get a public option though...he's not a leader.
I am in favor of H.R.676 (single payer). Health insurance Reform is not going to happen in any meaningful way as long as these parasites are allowed a place at the table.
Who has more victims - these CEOs or the FBI's most wanted list? In terms of saving most lives, who's activities should be stopped - these CEO's companies or the FBI most wanted? My guess is that the FBI needs a new list...
"Rescission" is the insurance company GOTCHA that kills. This is truly disgusting and inexcusable.
Our health care system is rotten at its very core, because its very core is a health insurance industry that is driven not be any concern whatever for life or health, but simply by profit and greed.
I vote for Single Payer. Better a Government employee than a million dollar for profit CEO. Every claim the company can deny is another dollar in his pocket. I have lived in Europe and everyone is covered, even visitors. So Much false information is given about European plans. We pay taxes for police and fire, why not for our own health. Check out the French, Austrian, or Danish plans before spouting misinformation.
Oh, this makes me furious. I'm self-employed and ended up buying a crap policy from Assurant even though they screwed a self-employed friend of mine. Looks like the Assurant CEO who makes half a million dollars a year is the biggest jackass of this whole group. I don't advocate violence, but that man needs a good slap.
We need a public option so that we have more choices than just the for-profit system. Especially if they're going to have mandated universal coverage. If there's going to be a mandate then they shouldn't force you to buy for-profit insurance where they have a financial obligation to shareholders to deny as much coverage as is legally feasible. That seems like a fair compromise. If there has to be a mandate then we should get more choices.
We pay twice as much, but I wouldn't say we get nothing to show for it, we have the CEO of United Healthcare getting a 1.8 billion dollar golden parachute.
This is precisely why a substantive public option is needed. Existing firms do NOT provide a credible product. There is zero reason to believe premiums are actually buying anything.
Right along with any of our representatives who take their side and sabotage the implementation of a public option.
We will have to wait and see who has been bought off by the insurers.
A public option, while inferior to a single payer system, will provide much needed competition to the insurance industry that has had no competition for too long.
Wow, what a weasel, I hope people see now how we are getting ripped off by these companies. Amazing how many questions they cant answer because they 'don't know about that'.
bad solution vs bad solution does not make a good solution.
Do you think that an insurance agent on the phone in a cubical a thousand miles away is gonna know what is best for you or is the doctor that is sitting in the same room with you holding your chart gonna know?
Replace insurance agent with bureaucrat. Hell, at least with the insurance agent, you'll be able to cuss him out on the phone. You'll have to talk to the bureaucrats receptionist.
worldwidebum, my wife spends hours every week fighting insurance companies. Guess what? You only get to talk to the equivalent of receptionists. The decision-makers, the people who deny claims, are not available by phone, and often the people who are available by phone can only guess at why the claim was denied. Insurance companies have millions of unaccountable bureaucrats.
Ah worldwidebum. How little you know. A doctor doesn't have to talk to a bureaucrat in a single payer system. The bureaucrats have already consulted specialists and know all the various treatments that are effective and have ok'd them for payment. The doctor treats however s/he wants and submits their billing AFTER for reimbursement - they don't have to ask for permission first.
For those afraid of the tax man coming - he already has. We are already paying more than we would if every American was insured..... Why? Because uninsureds usually get treated at State Hospitals which simply get their revenue for the uninsureds from State and Local taxes instead of a line-item tax, such as Medicare.
Emergency room care is the most expensive kind of treatment?! And has the less desirable results! And that's not even mentioning the lost days of work avoided due to health problems by citizens covered by a public plan!!
And I'm tired of hearing we can't afford this. WE CAN"T AFFORD NOT TO! Do you know how much money this would save small business to have a public healthcare plan that their employees could be covered by?! And for hospitals to have no indigent care, to have all of our population covered by a public healthcare paln?! Do you know how much cheaper their care would be if they have coverage & are seen by a doctor in a timely manner instead of waiting & ending up in an emergency room for treatment?
How dare these companies! Let's hold Congress' feet to the fire until we can begin the process of true reform by including a robust public option - something like Medicare by which I am now adequately covered - in the emerging plan.
Insurance companies as well as for-profit hospitals have to go. They bring nothing to the healthcare table for our population. They only suck the system dry and drive up cost. I have worked my entire life in healthcare & they have no business in healthcare. But they will fight and fight hard not to lose their gravy train. But for our national economy we must get profit out of our healthcare system..
The absolute second there is a public option I'm leaving the clutches of these scum bags. That's why they're so scared, because they know no-one will want to consort with such corruption if they have a choice.
Medicare and Medicaid are huge programs administered at 10% of the cost of for-profit insurance companies. But there is a larger trend, which is conversion of hospitals etc to for-profit. That has to be reversed in addition to single payer. The whole concept of the market is flawed with respect to healthcare, because it is being treated as a normal good, which it is not. We ALL benefit from a healthy population.
Without a public option healthcare reform is a sham. For profit health insurance will sell out individual US citizens to make a profit every time. I trust the US government 1000x more that I trust Insurance Co. CEOs.
They are all dogs, I have never seen an elephant fly and I have never seen an honest politician. All they ever do is divide the country based on sex, race, income status and anything else they can use to divide the people. Everyone should be healthy, but while we spend billions funding 756 military bases around the world, we can not afford it. We can not afford to feed people while the elite politicians have their cake.

It's called regulation and its necessary for the govt to implement some to restrain companies from begging borrowing or stealing as much money as they can. everything is legal, I don't see any problem.

I have lived in Europe and everyone is covered, even visitors. So Much false information is given about European plans. We pay taxes for police and fire, why not for our own health. Check out the French, Austrian, or Danish plans before spouting misinformation.

bluegirlkc12345 2 years ago 4
We need a public option so that we have more choices than just the for-profit system. Especially if they're going to have mandated universal coverage. If there's going to be a mandate then they shouldn't force you to buy for-profit insurance where they have a financial obligation to shareholders to deny as much coverage as is legally feasible. That seems like a fair compromise. If there has to be a mandate then we should get more choices.
jrshipley 2 years ago 6
We pay twice as much, but I wouldn't say we get nothing to show for it, we have the CEO of United Healthcare getting a 1.8 billion dollar golden parachute.
Karlzbad119 2 years ago 6
This is precisely why a substantive public option is needed. Existing firms do NOT provide a credible product. There is zero reason to believe premiums are actually buying anything.
GrownupPhan 2 years ago 3
These guys have got to go...
Right along with any of our representatives who take their side and sabotage the implementation of a public option.
We will have to wait and see who has been bought off by the insurers.
A public option, while inferior to a single payer system, will provide much needed competition to the insurance industry that has had no competition for too long.

You'll have to talk to the bureaucrats receptionist.
worldwidebum 2 years ago
worldwidebum, my wife spends hours every week fighting insurance companies. Guess what? You only get to talk to the equivalent of receptionists. The decision-makers, the people who deny claims, are not available by phone, and often the people who are available by phone can only guess at why the claim was denied. Insurance companies have millions of unaccountable bureaucrats.
josephusOB 2 years ago 6
Hey, I stand corrected. Thank you letting me know there is no difference in the two entities.
worldwidebum 2 years ago
Ah worldwidebum. How little you know. A doctor doesn't have to talk to a bureaucrat in a single payer system. The bureaucrats have already consulted specialists and know all the various treatments that are effective and have ok'd them for payment. The doctor treats however s/he wants and submits their billing AFTER for reimbursement - they don't have to ask for permission first.

melindafla 2 years ago 2
And I'm tired of hearing we can't afford this. WE CAN"T AFFORD NOT TO! Do you know how much money this would save small business to have a public healthcare plan that their employees could be covered by?! And for hospitals to have no indigent care, to have all of our population covered by a public healthcare paln?! Do you know how much cheaper their care would be if they have coverage & are seen by a doctor in a timely manner instead of waiting & ending up in an emergency room for treatment?
melindafla 2 years ago 7
How dare these companies! Let's hold Congress' feet to the fire until we can begin the process of true reform by including a robust public option - something like Medicare by which I am now adequately covered - in the emerging plan.
etwalsh 2 years ago 5
Insurance companies as well as for-profit hospitals have to go. They bring nothing to the healthcare table for our population. They only suck the system dry and drive up cost. I have worked my entire life in healthcare & they have no business in healthcare. But they will fight and fight hard not to lose their gravy train. But for our national economy we must get profit out of our healthcare system..
melindafla 2 years ago 5
The absolute second there is a public option I'm leaving the clutches of these scum bags. That's why they're so scared, because they know no-one will want to consort with such corruption if they have a choice.
GirlsRockMovie 2 years ago 5
Medicare and Medicaid are huge programs administered at 10% of the cost of for-profit insurance companies. But there is a larger trend, which is conversion of hospitals etc to for-profit. That has to be reversed in addition to single payer. The whole concept of the market is flawed with respect to healthcare, because it is being treated as a normal good, which it is not. We ALL benefit from a healthy population.
iridiumMirror 2 years ago 4
