The "Mario" series has a generally nonsensical and abstract nature, so people accept when Mario characters go to the desert / space / etc. in the Mario Party series because it fits.

The "Sonic" series, however, has a more serious (or at least, has been since 1998) nature-- therefore, it would be unfitting for Sonic characters to go to abstract locations.
