It's pretty interesting that we in Sweden still sing a contemporary funny song from 1865 about how Abraham Lincoln was murdered. I guess that in the USA they don't have any songs about the murder of Abraham Lincoln.
@Commodorianen Might have to do with the fact that news was spread through songs that travelled the land. Not the only world event to be "popularised" in this way. Fact isn't all that important in this tradition. And the song isn't supposed to be "funny" at all. It is simplified news to a popular tune.
@Mirdamor well ... we actually have a song about Olof Palme being murdered, For some reason I don't seem to be allowed to link to videos here but if you search at Youtube or Google videos for "Olof Palme gick på bio" you will find it. It contains lyrics like "Skottet brann, blodet rann, Olof Palme han försvann". Earlier this year, Sverigedemokraterna, including their party leader Jimmie Åkesson, sang that song at a party they had. There was a lot written and said in Swedish media about that.
This song represents a generation with the progress of happy days in the future, allways a smile in your bag , and no intension of bad behavior, if the other part did´nt agree. That´s why it makes me so happy to see, generations to come, allways believe in your future and take the opportunity to be "honest".
Children today, you would be lost by friends, telling so, but home with your parents, appreciate a song from long, long time ago

Tjolahopp tjang tjong faleladala,
tjolahopp tjang tjong fallirej.
när kungen av Nordliga Amerika
blev skjuten, ja skjuten mitt itu.

And a rifle he was holding tightly in his hand —
With powder and bullets it was packed.
Then he shot the king directly in the skull,
So his head, it fell right off his neck.
And the blood made stains upon the theater walls,
And the butler murmured, "What the heck?!"
So he died, this great kind-hearted emperor,
And is happy now, I think — don't you?
May the devil take away that murderer
Who shot the emperor in two.

He went out to see the actors in a play,
For he enjoyed that quite a lot.
And he absolutely never did imagine that
For that very reason he'd be shot.
Well, he sat there in the theater and he watched
As they played the latest comedy.
He was dressed up in the very latest stylish clothes;
His Morocco leather boots a sight to see.
Then there came a terrible man through the door,
Oh, he was so horrible, in fact.

I have no difficulty with the swedish accent: in fact, i do understand their english better than songs of native English people. (i'm dutch speaking)

Let's not be harsh on them. The Swedish accents give these records charm, just as in many later Abba songs.
