make the holiday, but for the rights reasons. but the fact is that there were many black slave owners throughout the history of the united states. a notable figure is William Ellison. it should also be noted that prior to 1700 blacks could and did own white slaves, anthony johnson is a notable black slave owner of both whites and blacks.
