Golliwogg (the original one from the books) was a positive character made from a negative stereotype. Like it or not, he was one of the earliest "black" characters that was able to successfully intermingle with "white" characters (the peg dolls). He wasn't an idiot like other black characters of the time, he was a bit rash but he was friendly and FUN. Wish I'd read the "Two Dutch Dolls" story when I was a little kid...

There's nothing crude or ridiculous about Golliwogs; they're cute characters with warm, friendly smiles. Also, some sites say that kids found Golliwogg easier to relate to than the white English fairy tale characters of the time. Perhaps we should also ban fairy tale dolls for being unrealistic, dehumanized portraits of whites, Mr. Watson?

I have been a collector of gollies since I was a young girl. My nan and aunty first introduced the knitted toy to my older brothers and they were passed down to me. I continue to add to the small collection I now own over 150 of these gorgeous dolls. I do not consider these dolls to be racist, as most collectors or people who have once own a golly have been "white" If these "white" people were racist they would never own one. Golliwogs are bright, cheery and always have a happy face.
