Who do you think you're kidding? These horses are used to earn money and win titles. Most of these jockeys or whatever they are called doesn't give a rats ass about their horses. They have hired people who work with the horses 24/7, and they just compete with them.
And these horses are forced to this whether they want to or not. I've heard dozens of stories of horses being "forced" with electric shocks and other nasty methods to make high jumps. Stop lying and face reality

This horse died because his aorta ruptured. It definitely happens randomly, as we cannot look at the heart or the veins/arteries near the heart. An ultrasound/xray can't even see through the lungs, muscle and bone surrounding the heart. There is no way to know that this is happening before it is actually happening. I feel so bad for Eric. I have had horses die, but never shockingly. Poor thing.

It's a sort of thing that unfortunately just happens from time to time, to both people and animals regardless of whether they're doing sports or or not. It kills, nothing you can do about it and no warning. Fortunately this sort of internal bleeding is not painful - the blood pressure just drops and you lose consciousness very quickly. What Hickstead's legs did is just a reflex, he didn't feel a thing at that point.

Show horses are quarantined by show officials for at least 2 weeks before the show. This is to PREVENT drugging. The officials hire their own people to care for the horses until they are to actually compete. Vets screen each horse to assure that they are not drugged and that they are healthy and fit to compete. If they find anything wrong with a horse, it is REMOVED from the event immediately.

The modern hose, the animal we see today, would not exists if it was not for man using them for toys, food, tools, and transportation. If man had not become involved, today's horses would most likely be the Takhi, which is endangered.

The only loss Hickstead's team will suffer from is losing another tool. They will buy another one right away. If they really cared about the horse, they would not participate in the sport at all. Ask any horse person and they'd tell you its not like owning a dog or a cat or something, its like having a best friend, a soul-mate, or, in some cases, a child. Someone who you love and loves you in return. They go above and beyond for their people and we try to give them the best in return. Owning a horse is not like owning a little pet, its more like a partnership. If you've never loved a horse, you'll never know what I'm talking about.

In September, Hickstead was doing just fine and Lamaze himself had said that he would get the winter off before competing in the 2012 Olympics. Things like this happen, not only to horses, but to people. Go look it up. Just four hours ago an article was posted of a hs football player who died from heart failure. He was fine one moment and not the next. Shit like this happens to amazing athletes.

The bond and understanding that forms between riders and drivers and their horses is very real. It is born of countless hours of working together, wether it is to practice for show jumping competitions as Hickstead and his rider Eric have, or a cowboy working cows with his horse or a carriage driver and his or her carriage horse. Anyone who watches carefully can see that even as he was struggling, Hickstead searched for Eric & purposely looked right at him during his last moments of awareness..

The modern hose, the animal we see today, would not exists if it was not for man using them for toys, food, tools, and transportation. If man had not become involved, today's horses would most likely be the Takhi, which is endangered.

@Byrd968 Yes you do make an interesting point. As far as I know, horses are indigenous to Asia and Europe. One could argue that humans are to blame for driving many species to extinction. Either way, one can still have a hand in selective breeding without caging them, etc. I suppose there is no money in that though. :\

The only loss Hickstead's team will suffer from is losing another tool. They will buy another one right away. If they really cared about the horse, they would not participate in the sport at all. Hickstead is a great horse, and just like dicttta said, he is on of the few animals who wear his asshole in the back.

This an extremely sad news for the equestrian sport and people who love showjumping. Hickstead is one of the best (in the modern times) horse ever seen, winning and jumping everything and everywhere with class, style and overall a lot of power and energy. We all have the hopes to find a horse like you, despite you were one in a million. Hickstead, rest in peace. We'll certainly will miss you... on behalf all showjumpers around the globe

Its just came out on MSNBC that the horse had been seen doing cocaine 8-balls in back of the barn before the show....just like a lot of the pro athletes. If everybody really loved the horse, they would have set him free on about 200 acres of land with other horses and let him have horsey fun and sex ...which is what all horses really want to do...not be some beauty pageant prize that performs like a monkey for rich people.. by the way, in Kyushu , Japan, raw horse is a delicacy.

Ask any horse person and they'd tell you its not like owning a dog or a cat or something, its like having a best friend, a soul-mate, or, in some cases, a child. Someone who you love and loves you in return. They go above and beyond for their people and we try to give them the best in return. Owning a horse is not like owning a little pet, its more like a partnership. If you've never loved a horse, you'll never know what I'm talking about.

@SoloDAngelo The horse died because of a weak heart apparently? I don't know, I wasn't there. In September, Hickstead was doing just fine and Lamaze himself had said that he would get the winter off before competing in the 2012 Olympics. Things like this happen, not only to horses, but to people. Go look it up. Just four hours ago an article was posted of a hs football player who died from heart failure. He was fine one moment and not the next. Shit like this happens to amazing athletes.

The bond and understanding that forms between riders and drivers and their horses is very real. It is born of countless hours of working together, wether it is to practice for show jumping competitions as Hickstead and his rider Eric have, or a cowboy working cows with his horse or a carriage driver and his or her carriage horse. Anyone who watches carefully can see that even as he was struggling, Hickstead searched for Eric & purposely looked right at him during his last moments of awareness..
