When the Government made cuts in the late 1950s lots of us were relocated to different loco sheds some of the lads from Botanic Gardeds Loco shed went to Leeds and Doncaster I went with two others to Gateshead, I had digs in Bensham. It was a job and at the time and because of my age I did not think I was lucky, But looking back in time I know I was lucky bacause up in Gateshead I was LUCKY enough to be a fireman on A3 s & A4 Pacifics and believe me them fire boxes are very very wide. Fantastic,I was on the footplate as a fireman and worked from Botanic Gardens loco sheds Its the first time I've seen any pics of the locos I was on. I fired locos to Withernsea ,Leeds it was back breaking but I was young only 18 an bit had good and bad times, Drivers let us drive the locos sometime One time I drove a B1 out of the shed to top up with water, steam pressure down so vac brake was bad driver left chain on track it caught on front and pulled water tower down just missed driver.Dave

I used to travel on this train every day from Ottringham (where my father was the signalman) to Withernsea from the age of 5 to 8 (1950 onwards)
Thanks for the memory !!
