as far as i know the switch that does nothing is actually designed to play famicom/ super famicom games, if you look carefully you can see under the switch two letters (O/J) the "j" standing for japanese and the "o", in my guess, stands for original. hope that helps
thanks for doing the retro twin review i got one on the way and i was worried about it not being worth but you have convinced me that it will be worth it
If you're going to do this, you might aswell use emulators instead and play the retro games on the computer. You can buy usb adapters that'll let you play any controller of your liking. I just got one for the PS1/PS2 for like 5 bucks off Ebay. I can play just about every system with it, it has enough buttons.
The reason some SNES games don't work on clones or on the retro flash carts is because the games in question contained special chips to enhance the games beyond the SNES abilities. Megaman X has a special sound chip, Yoshies Island has the Super FX2 chip, same as Doom. There's not many Genesis titles that did any kind of enhancing beyond Virtua Racing.
I just received my Retron3 in the mail today. Haven't had a chance to hook it up yet, but very excited. Just wondering, I know Super Gameboy and Game Genies work on it. But is there a way for it to run Sega Master System Power Base converter? (Or 32X ?)
too bad it doesnt play all 3 nintendo systems that would be good idea have them all in one system with good graphics awsome sound effects and much more
John, I have the newer version of the retron3 called the tri system instead of 3 in 1. It looks way better than the first model. Only two problems: My original NES controllers wont work, but the 3rd party ones do. Oh yeah and when I put some of my genesis games in it came up that it wasnt compatible. The switch on the back made them work. Overall I like it just so I wont wear out my original systems too fast b/c I game every day.
Hey. i got the retron 3 for my brother for xmas. If he hadnt have requested it i wouldnt have. I feel rather emberassed getting it after watching him play it. i do agree the controllers are useless. luckily i have spares for all 3 systems. but the quality wasnt nearly as good as the actual systems. i agree, its a good starter system. but not for avid gamers.
Just started to watch your videos, like to say thanks and they are awesome, with all your stuff I would have thought I would have seen you do work with AVGN
@TOMATOEE99 Hell yes. Both systems can save. If they could not save then they would be pointless systems, especially for those great RPGs on the SNES.
@Chaoitcme thanks fro answerring im living in pal region (not in UK in Finland) so if i buy retron 3where i can find connnectors for the ac adapter?(sorry for my bad english)
@TOMATOEE99 I think PAL version games can not play on a Retron 3. I am not to familiar with the PAL format but I think that the connectors are different so it will not work even with a different ac adapter. I could be wrong so you should ask around.
ehh. those genaric styles arents the same for some reason. id only buy em if i wasnt able to find the game system i wanted. their very useful for alot of ppl
I have a Retron3 coming in the mail any day now. An old landlord of mine gave away my NES and SNES without my permission. Luckily she did not give away my games. I have all of these games but no way to play them. The Retron3 seems like a good idea.
thanks I was looking for reviews of the retro twin (I own a retro duo v2 and a couple of original genesis systems, so it sounds like I'm not missing much)
@GamerMan1985 So long as the TV has composite and/or S-Video ports you can. However, a 480i analog video feed won't look that great on it when compared to HD video.
The reason that some games don't work on either system is likely due to the same reasoning to why Primal Rage (Sega Genesis) is best played on either the Genesis or on the PC version to have working fatalities. The coding of the game itself and whatever security protocols that have to be 'unlocked' in order to enjoy full game play to the original releases.
@Sargotha - Not quite. The reason for Castlevania III, Rad Racer II, After Burner for the NES and Virtua Racing not working on the RetroN3 is due to missing connections between the NOAC/GOAC and the cartridge slot. The RetroN3 did get a revised NOAC which fixes the compatibility issues with Castlevania III and Rad Racer II, but After Burner is still not 100% compatible(plays with severe graphical errors) and since the Genesis side is unchanged, Virtua Racing still doesn't work.
I had a FC Twin. It was designed to play NES and SNES games. Only fault I had with it was the cardinal directions wouldn't work on the controllers that came with it. And according to wikipedia, you could buy an attachment so you could use the NES light gun.
thanks for the review and a reminder for the commenters just think the more recent systems the add to the retron the bigger it will be is this worth paying the price for eventhough one of the best games on it doesn't work super mario rpg and the being the case does that mean that other games like it for example clay fighters wont work with the retron3 and if super mario rpg has a special chip in it why don't they make a converter or something for it?
My US LCD does support PAL their are almost No TVs now that can't do both; many DVD and blu-ray Players will take PAL dvds and make them NTSC of US TVs. The only ones I'm sure of is the PS3 and X-BOX 360.

if anyone is thinking of getting one? then go for the Retron 3 as they will play SNES, NES, Genesis & the Japanese carts,& will work all 3 manufacturers official joypads/controllers & with some of the accessory's, so for what it is they are a much better option & oddly enough are about the same price to buy new now as this retro twin would cost. good review though as usual. :-)
hello i am new here! I got a question about the RetroN 3 and that is if the RetroN 3 is capable to reproduce the game Comic Zone from Genesis on it?? PLease i want to know it before to but it. Cheers
Hiya! I just got the Retron 3. Can you tell me if the Retron3 plays NTSC-J Japanese Supernintendo/Superfamicom games? I really want to get Pop n Twinbee but not sure if it will play. Thanks! :D
You said the NES sound and colors were off on the Retro Twin, but good on the RetroN3, but in the video it looks like it´s the other way around... Could it be that you swapped the video files?
I bought the red one like a week ago and I have to say.......... it is AWESOME. Seriously, if you're thinking about buying a real SNES,Genesis, or NES console, look no further. The R3 is the shit. I have a HDTV at home and the picture quality still is really good. I'm buying a older TV this weekend though.
The Retron3 uses infrared for wireless,,, seriously!? I thought we had put that horror behind us years ago. Anyway I am not a fan of these multi-console consoles at all. The problem is that they are cramming several crappy knockoffs in one box when they can not even get one system to run correctly. Plus the multi-consoles look quite ugly with so many extra plugs and sockets sticking out.
What would you recommend, there is a game place where I live that sells Retro Duos for $60, and then on Ebay there are Yobos for $50, with free shipping. Which one should I buy? I got a butt load of NES games, from some old guy for about $2 a piece, we're talking all 3 Castlevanias, contra force, super C, Indiana jones last crusade, he even had all 6, all 6 Megamans!!!! Well my nintendo sucks balls, so I want to play some, and what about 72 pin connectors? I don't know much about these, please!
For the Retro Twin, I found that the NES carts fit in a bit lopsided. Just set the cart in the slot and push on the top right of the cart. I hope you know what I mean, it is kinda hard to explain. Maybe I could upload a video sometime, if it would help. Also, my Retro Twin doesn't have those sound problems with the NES games, maybe because of the way I put the cart in. Or maybe they tweaked the hardware.
I am getting the retron 3 only cause I still own a collection of genesis games and I still havve the original controllers. I like that it has s video and my tv has s video on it which is sweet. Hopefully all my games work great. Thanks for the review.
I've bought a Retro Twin so I can play a Starfox cartridge. It wouldn't get past the opening scene, before you can actually play the game. That was after the first few tries. Now it refuses to even play the game, the moment I push the power button. After that experience, I purchased the SNES Jr. and now, Starfox plays perfectly fine.
Good if your a tedious collector that does'nt like messing with your mint boxed systems, not the mention connecting....disconnecting, connecting...disconnecting, I dealt with that shit for years and it gets tiring after awhile.
To be honest. Your getting fucked & ripped off. Go download the emulator & play it with a controller or keyboard. This is a waste. If you emulate it, you wont have these problems.
@SuperMajinGogeta4 emulators suck and plus he is a collector to me emulators are just like downloading mp3's. it doesnt have good quality when downloading roms
nice reviews good to know that there are systems that play classic games, that the original systems might not work, like me i'm all about the games, not really into the whole consoles, it's all about the games, thanks for what you do man, keep it up bro
@drunkvaderaz I got a new HDTV. My N64, SNES, and PS1 look like crap on it. Even my Dreamcast is a little "meh." It's not the Retrogen. It's the fact HDTV's usually have big screens which causes a stretch... Which causes it to be pixelated a considering these are 8-16 bit consoles. You can slim your picture on an HDTV, though. It slightly works better.
Hmm. Maybe the 4th setting on the Retron3 was going to be for Sega Master System but they cut it for some reason? Did you try the 4th setting just to see what it did?
@MazeleyFanClub - The 4th setting just turns on the Super NES side. Sega Master System compatibility isn't advertised on the RetroN3, but it does work with Master System games using a Power Base Converter on the Genesis side. I believe the reason they have a 4-position switch is because they couldn't get a proper 3-position switch to fit inside the system.
@mp4podcastDOTcom - Once again, These clones DO NOT EMULATE THE CONSOLES!!! They're the same hardware as the originals, but in a different package and with some differences due to either incorrect reverse-engineering(NES sound and video inaccuracies) or external circuits(Genesis sound issues).
And don't you worry, Mode 7 games on modern-day Super NES clones work just fine. As do Super FX games. Games with the SA-1 co-processor in the carts might have issues due to the lack of a lockout chip.
When i looked on a site called video game central i saw two dual genesis clones that both played genesis and NES games. why cant some companies be creative and make something that makes mores sense? for example: a 2-in-1 that plays Genesis and Master System (which r both Segas) games like they have the FC Twin which is NES and SNES (which r both Nintendos). P.S. The Retron3 is wicked awesome!!!!!!! :) :) :) 3 smiles for 3 awesome systems in one!
@Gamester81 Just so you are aware the Retron 3 and the Retron Twin does not play every NES game some I have found Ninja Gaiden 2 and 3, CaslteVania III, and several others. I know its not the cartridge because it works fine on my working original NES system.
I have an FC3 Plus which also has the O/J switch as well. I noticed that some of my games, especially Quackshot Starring Donald Duck act differently when switched to J. If you play Quackshot while the switch is on J, all the games text and the title screen is in Japanese.
However, I can run most other Genesis games in my library while the switch is on J, and only a small number of them give a region lockout message.
@Gamester81 The O/J Switch on the system is a Region Swtich But it's only for Sega Genesis games because my Gen-X got the same swtich and if you have Streets of Rage 2 and wate till the push start screen pop up then filp the swtich i will show you the Streets of Rage 2 Screen will change if you do it to Sonic 1 or any other genesis game you'll get the Region screen saying that the game is made for North America Systems
You should be able to run Super Famicom games using the SNES game genie (modified of course... cut those two plastic tabs off the top using a hobby knife). have you tried that?
wish they made a saturn,ps1 multisystem with a n64 port on top too

Well my nintendo sucks balls, so I want to play some, and what about 72 pin connectors? I don't know much about these, please!

For the Retro Twin, I found that the NES carts fit in a bit lopsided. Just set the cart in the slot and push on the top right of the cart. I hope you know what I mean, it is kinda hard to explain. Maybe I could upload a video sometime, if it would help. Also, my Retro Twin doesn't have those sound problems with the NES games, maybe because of the way I put the cart in. Or maybe they tweaked the hardware.

does it play castlevania 3?

The controller sucks. Sorry... It will be good for Genesis games, but not Nintendo. Seems confusing,
jupiter0225 1 year ago
It's easer to buy the real system, I was planing to buy a clone system but I will stay away, I rather the game be a orginal as it was.
I rather use my money for a real nes and some money to fix my snes,
bigjake52 1 year ago
To be honest. Your getting fucked & ripped off. Go download the emulator & play it with a controller or keyboard. This is a waste. If you emulate it, you wont have these problems.

@SuperMajinGogeta4 emulators suck and plus he is a collector to me emulators are just like downloading mp3's. it doesnt have good quality when downloading roms

nice reviews good to know that there are systems that play classic games, that the original systems might not work, like me i'm all about the games, not really into the whole consoles, it's all about the games, thanks for what you do man, keep it up bro
Rafaelipod 1 year ago
I'd much rather play a genesis game where Z and C are the bumpers than play a snes game where L and R are right beside X and A.

i had gotten a reto system and it looked like crap on a HDTV.
drunkvaderaz 1 year ago
@drunkvaderaz I got a new HDTV. My N64, SNES, and PS1 look like crap on it. Even my Dreamcast is a little "meh." It's not the Retrogen. It's the fact HDTV's usually have big screens which causes a stretch... Which causes it to be pixelated a considering these are 8-16 bit consoles. You can slim your picture on an HDTV, though. It slightly works better.

Hmm. Maybe the 4th setting on the Retron3 was going to be for Sega Master System but they cut it for some reason? Did you try the 4th setting just to see what it did?
MazeleyFanClub 1 year ago
@MazeleyFanClub - The 4th setting just turns on the Super NES side. Sega Master System compatibility isn't advertised on the RetroN3, but it does work with Master System games using a Power Base Converter on the Genesis side. I believe the reason they have a 4-position switch is because they couldn't get a proper 3-position switch to fit inside the system.
Ace9921 1 year ago
These clones might be having a problem emulating Mode 7 on SNES games. Mode 7 is Snes 3D effect.
I loved Super Star Wars and how they used Mode 7.
mp4podcastDOTcom 1 year ago

When I do get a RetroN3, I will run a test to see if the O/J switch will work on that system as well.
EncoreEnterprisesLLC 1 year ago
I have an FC3 Plus which also has the O/J switch as well. I noticed that some of my games, especially Quackshot Starring Donald Duck act differently when switched to J. If you play Quackshot while the switch is on J, all the games text and the title screen is in Japanese.
However, I can run most other Genesis games in my library while the switch is on J, and only a small number of them give a region lockout message.
EncoreEnterprisesLLC 1 year ago
