In terms of the lyrics, this may just be one of the finest songs ever written. And how beautiful is her voice ... my God, the passion ... and the orchestration is lovely, especially the cello.
The song is so musically fantastic. She turns loneliness and depression into this great dramatic scene...which of course captures it perfectly, because when you truly lonely and despondent it becomes your whole world, a drama bigger in your own heart and soul than all others. To even be able to write a song like this implies being in a very dark place once, and feeling completely alone there. It is a gripping drama.
Does anyone know where the youtube went of Janis Ian singing this song LIVE in concert? Hard to believe, but the LIVE version was way better than the recorded version (& the recorded was one of my favorites). Thanks.
I LOVE Janis and all her music, but I hate these songs behind a postcard/graphic/lyrics scroll. What's the bloody point?? This is SERIOUSLY frustrating. And it's not like abandoned wagons are even MENTIONED in the song...could you PLEASE put some effort into representing Janis??
De tout ce que j'ai pu entendre de ma ptite vie : Janis ian et Noirdez sont ce qu'il y a de plus beau ces 30 dernières années...Juste un moment de grâce.
This song is such a heartbreaking poetic portrait of isolation and lonelyness. I understand it as a person who comes into contact with an ex lover. She had opted out of relationships but he had forged a life; and this brings her situation into sharp contrast "you have a lovely home...no I live alone". She resents his relationships "I met your friend...what can I say?" And (thinks) "ugly wife"/(says "you have a lovely wife". The "TV in the afternoon" and "I'm not afraid" denote isolation.
I had this on vinyl and my home burned and I lost all my music along with everything else I owned...thank you so very much for this song. It describes my life after the fire.
I grew up listening to Janis's music, and my mother gave me her Miracle Row and Between the Lines albums. She signed my Between the Lines CD at an in-store appearance I went to with my mother. She is an amazing artist.
I am listening to that album here at work and did a search to see who else remembered it. Good work. "Water Colors" is another good one from that album. The whole album is very good.
I love Janis Ian's music. This was sort of a theme song of mine. I know. Pathetic. Well..when it wasn't this one, it was "At Seventeen" Thanks for sharing. I really love the song!!
Lyrics said it perfectly...I used to say it all the time, listening to this album just makes ya wanna off yourself...LOVE IT! Was one of the first albums I ever bought and still have it!
@lyrics47 I do not usually do this type of thing, but, considering your comment about the wrists and the fact that you have some kind of understanding about how wonderful Janis Ian truly is, I have not really communicated with someone who I can truly relate to in a very long time, are you female? If you are creeped out by this, I will understand. Take care.
Hopefully someone has replied to you by now. This song is titled "In the Winter" written & performed by Janis Ian (the incredible!)It is from an early album "Between the Lines" one of her best albums. Sort of a comeback after 4 years off. Get into her music--it'll blow you away.
Just heard this for the first time, and I'm blown away at what a great song this is.
