Major plot hole: He didn't get the nails his father needed to finish the unfinished treehouse. So, why the **** is the kid in the Tree House at the end? HE DIDN'T GET WHAT HE WAS SUPPOSED TO! Also, I wondered if Christopher Loyd stole the cash on the kid while he was "in book land." "Don't mine me, I'm a creepy pedophile bibliophile who's going to rape your comatose body and steel your cash.
eh to me this movie is ok. i liked it as a kid but looking back at it i think its just "okay" i mean i liked the dragon. i liked the giant squid. i liked the whale.
I love this movie. The only complaint I have about it is in the trailer for it, he gets a freakin sword when he wakes up instead of Christopher Lloyd hovering over him, and if you watch the trailer, the sword scene looks like it would've been badass, I don't care if it did or didn't go along with the movie.
This movie was and still is one of my very favorite movies as a child. Memories of watching it over at my grandma's during our visit to the Smoky Mountains play over and over in my mind...and here I sit watching one of my favorite movie critics totally raping it in front of me with his rants as I laugh hysterically...my God, how I've grown. XP
just have to say this when it comes to the scene where the kid runs of with the books: LOOK at those BOOK!!? DAMN if i´d find classics looking like that I´d know for sure they´re worth a LOT!!! I like buying books from second hand shops (ya know that ´smell´ the old books have, like new cars?) but shit those look like smth a collector would hunt down! Kid, you´re carrying great deal of money! DONT RETURN THEM! :D
Now that looks like a library where I could spend my whole day reading my favourite books!! :D The atmosphere (lets leave the akward bearded man aside), the looks, the size..no..other customers, anywhere? ok creepy but maybe that´s why I like it? <:)
Okay, i see why this is doing bad. They are trying to get kids to read. The problem is they are trying to get CHILDREN to read Dr. Jackel and Mr. Hide, and Moby Dick. Those are not good books for people who dislike reading to read.
I actually appreciate this movie even more now that I'm older. I love to read and looking at it now know where scenes later on in the movie come from like Gulliver's Travels.
I love how adventures voice changes.. as in they changed the voice actor a few times thats cause they edited out the "naughty" lines that were in the movie originally. Then when they wanted a re-dub PS was busy so they got a sound-a-like. Sorta... LAME
I still have this. I enjoy it, though I will admit, it's nowhere near as good as I remember it. It's OK, I think it's moreso supposed to get kids interested in the characters so they'll want to learn exactly who they are.
I always loved it though for the animation and the design. It's just a visual pleaser to me, eye candy.
@monny287 I loved this movie, too. Especially when I had the book Polly Pocket toys with the fairy worlds inside. I used to imagine that the toys came to life like in this movie. These were whimsical days.
@monny287 We're not alone, though we are low in number (I remember when it came out, and ALL my friends despised it; I had to watch it by myself, that or risk being social pariah and no kid wants that).
Granted, if one didn't see this as a kid, I can understand the hatred. Lets face it: as kids we can see past the glaringly shitty story/plot/acting and be entertained by a whole other realm of things, but through an adult's critical eye this is one of the most dull movies ever produced.
To me it seemed more like a movie for those who already read a lot. Thing is though I read all of the story's it showed after I saw this. I would explain more but I need to watch this movie again.
why does he bash on the nutcracker. i had to watch it for my 8th grade music class, and I loved him as the nutcracker prince! he didn't speak and i think he was a good actor (it might also help that I love the nutcracker but that's besides the point)
I agree with him on how it's not that memorable...as I've forgotten about it multiple times...but I still do like the movie, and enjoy it whenever I watch it. <3
I only watched it because I was already a massive bookworm who took delight from pointing out the various literary figures I was familiar with... And because I was already a fan of the book. Which proves that the book, with it's gorgeous two-page paintings depicting the realms as landscapes built from books, is better than the half-assed animated feature.
i remembered pagemaster i do recall it was kinda boring as i always fast forward (on vhs) to the cartoon part as i did not give a fuck about the live action parts. also i remember really loving the book characters especially the pirate book. too much nostalgia is rushing through me atm lol
@1serious0mfr I think most kids had to watch this movie in school. Awful. I remember being bored to tears any time a teacher put this on, and it CERTAINLY didn't get me stoked on reading. Everyone was pushing the "timeless classics" that I could never get into... Wasn't until I discovered authors like Chuck Palahniuk and James Frey that I got into reading.
I saw this as a stupid kid, liked it cause I was to stupid to know not to, and it didn't make me read more. Now the Hitchhiker's Guide is a different story.
once at a party i wanted to ask my mom if there were such things as white whales like moby dick. what came out was "is there such things as white dicks?"
I remember when this came out when I was a kid. I saw the trailers and was like, "M'eh!"
After school one day, my mum took me to my local video store and the lady who ran it said, "We've got Pagemaster in! You'll like it 'cause it's a cartoon!" To which I replied, "No I want to watch The Mask!"
Wow! I was smarter than a grown up at that point in my childhood!
Less than 2 minutes in to this review, and I'm already impressed. How the HELL does he manage to clap that fast? Go ahead and try to keep up... somewhere around 1:38 in, I think.
I actually liked this film as a kid but I was very young last i saw it, it did make me want to look out for some of these famous characters from books and I even read the likes of Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde, Dracula, Treasure island as I got older barely remembering the movie now.
