Using strictly plaster what casting on the human body can be very dangerous if the person is careless. Doctors do not use strictly plaster for casting. Most doctors use plaster strips (which is also what I use when I do body casting) they are more expensive but less dangerous. I think now that plaster strips are being replaced by other strips, maybe hydrocal instead of plaster....I am not certain though.

I think they usually tried to get actors to play victims who had traumatic experiences. I've read that they actually wanted to have actors play Bill Heasley (from the gun shop shooting) and the guy from the guitar electrocution, but they both insisted they wanted to play themselves.
