Boycott the 2010 Canadian Olympics. Each year the Canadian fishing industry kills over a 1/4 million baby Harp Seals for their fur alone. 325,000 in 2007 and 275,000 in 2008. Just "youtube" "Harp Seal Slaughter" right here on Youtube and see exactly what's going on
how could you not like cute? i didn't know americas top hat was so full of angry douche bags, eh? the third lady " there goofy, there stupid, there ugly " wow you canuks are angry. her parents could have done better, but who cares, eh.
They should have incorporated more of a native style to the characters. As Haida art is truly indigenous to this part of the world and its more interesting than these deliberately cute creatures.
As much as they are trying to be international for the sake of everyone involved in the olympics, they are still being help in Canada and so I don't think it should be a problem to make the mascots a little more realistic and Canadian. I mean this years mascots are completely representative of China and no other countries.
Actually, I thought the green mascot's headpiece reminded me of the Aztecs (Americas). The yellow one can be depicted for Asia, especially Nepal/Tibet, the blue one was reminiscent of the water folktales of Holland, forgot its name... (Europe), the red one seems more in tune to the Aborigines of Australia, and for no reason, the panda has to be Africa (representing the black ring?). Now the whole world is covered. Of course not. I do know about their connection to the Chinese legends btw.
People are completely uneducated when they say that the natives were missed in the mascot choice, not only are the three characters based off of native folklore but sumi is wearing traditional coast Salish clothing. Also, when that woman says that haida was missed I simply rolled my eyes and shook my head: they are not the only natives in BC. I am Haida and proud, but I believe that Vancouver has hit the mark with these mascots as they are diversity. Let's face it, people are afraid of change.
That blond woman with the green torque that called three solid-coloured characters of variable cuteness "gross"... just get out of your drug-infested Downtown Eastside slum and take a B-98 to Richmond, and see how many Asians exist. Sad to say we got ethnocentrics living here... I looked through the past mascots, and thank VANOC we don't have ice cubes, condom-looking thingys, which IS gross, an obese anteater or "pixelator's nightmare" frog that represented Atlanta.
From 24 Hours on Thursday (I'm just reporting what your newspapers think. Do not suspend me): WE HAVE A BEAR WITH THUNDERBIRD WINGS (and an orca hat?). We also have a Sasquatch whose name means he "likes to eat." And lastly, we have a weird orca/bear hybrid that looks like a Pokémon on narcotics...we can't even explain to OUR kids, never mind the world's."
Sir, if you a Vancouver native, would you please be so kind to know the Native culture? And what does your kid think then?
I dislike the Olympics. It is a racist corporation. The media uses the Olympics and media to distract us while the white men in power control the world without many people knowing.I'm a white woman (not proud) I respect the Natives and how well they maintained North America until these racist monsters destroyed it for their own personal gain and power. I read about the Natives they believed "We belong to the land. the land does not belong to us"
So you do not recommend global culture, but each culture should retain their own characteristics? It's quite sad that they only interviewed the white ones and a Filipino, but not us Asians about the mascots. If they represented a 100% white city, let's say, it wouldn't fit. But Vancouver is a multicultral city. The mascots represent Native themes in modern Asian art styles, otherwise known as the popular global phenomenon called 'anime'.
Lol, I guess I shouldn't fault you much since one can't put inflections in typing. I thought the outrageousness of the second sentence would speak for itself though :)
The Mascots are awsome what's not to like about them they snowboard, ski, surf, and play hockey. They could be lame like two walking Penises like they had in 2004. Now that is what I would call gay. How about 1996 Atlanta- What the heck is an Izzy. All I can say is that I am happy that these mascots are representing Vancouver for 2010. You can't please everyone but when it comes down to it if the kids love them that's all that matters.
Man how stupid can these people be? Have they even seen some of the mascots from other Olympics? Every Olympics has cartoon characters. These are easily the best Olympic mascots ever created. What is better than a hockey playing Sasquatch like how much more Canadian can that get. What did they really want another boring beaver like Montreal? Look at the past winter Olympics in Torino they had an ice cube and a snowball for mascots; and people are complaining about these ones wow.
I can understand what they were going for with these designs. The only character I think people can identify with are the genuine Sasquatch, since the other two are just a few things sloppily thrown together. As far as that one women's idea that the characters should be more native is insulting! Haven't the natives of this land been disenfranchised enough? If you want the truth, none of this inspires me to partake in this awful waste of tax payer dollars they call the Olympics.
we have so many great animals in BC - why can't we take one of them (the eagle or something) and turn it into a great mascot? instead of some childish (yes cute) and anime things...
Hey, the provincial animal (Spirit Bear) is Miga, who's also a hybrid orca. In Native mythology, killer whales apparently turn into bears upon reaching land. And the thunderbird is another Native symbol. There are totem poles with features of bears and eagles, and Sumi represents that. And the Sasquatch is the world-renowned Bigfoot.
only thing, they don't look like any of those. if they did those animals or spirits in a style that isn't so anime-ish, i think people would like them more.
it has nothing to do with tolerance. we are a very tolerant country, but the point is, people think they are too anime-ish and childish. people just want something that stands more for canada. i don't think it's right to take the aboriginal spirits and make them anime. it doesn't seem respectful.
"people think they are too anime-ish and childish"
Well, it's for the kids. If there are adults which are actually attracted in mascots like children do, then that's quite a problem. And since anime, regardless of its origin, is an international phenomenon that young people around the world universally adores, then it's a good marketing method. And remember, the Aboriginal/Haida art form is difficult to broadcast or reproduce in this digital age. Simpler vectors are more economical.
You have a point with them being simpler and easier to reproduce. But I still think they should have spent the extra time to make them in the Aboriginal/Haida art forms. It being for the kids has kind of limited their marketing thing, and when they ask older women and men then the majority of them are going to not like it.
PS - I was talking to the International Students during their ESL class and they didn't like the fact that Canada seems to have copied them (their words, not mine).
Even I can't think of an original character to attract all ages. Unless we give Dreamworks Pictures a whole bunch of dough and make Shrek our corporate mascot.
"PS - I was talking to the International Students during their ESL class and they didn't like the fact that Canada seems to have copied them (their words, not mine)."
Canada copied the stylings of modern Japanese art, though it has been imported, adapted, and exploited internationally. Anime really is a symbol of a global village.
Anime, a symbol of a global village. Most characters were designed to be racially ambiguous. That's one factor. Globalization (import) and localization (dubbing) of anime series have proved popular in foreign entertainment, and anime was no exception. "Glocalization" was a term that combined the two above, which means that imports are merely dubbed to maximize its popularity with, let's say, the American 5-12 year old demographic. That's why Pokémon was a billion-dollar hit.
(Continuing from last replies) Because of this glocalization process that anime purists obviously despise, anime is now an international hit & it's culturally significant in Japan's modern history. And the world's. Naturally, the IOC/VANOC'd want to attract a global crowd. Though the heritage isn't represented through the style, but the characters are. Native legends back up Miga/Sumi's hybrid form and Quatchi's the Sasquatch. Oh wait, Sumi's orca hat is quite Haida-ish.
"Though the heritage isn't represented through the style, but the characters are." Yes, I agree with you. And as i said at the beginning - the character's are canadian - i don't think the people interviewed are against the characters - i don't think they like the anime style...
"Canada copied the stylings of modern Japanese art, though it has been imported, adapted, and exploited internationally. Anime really is a symbol of a global village."
And the people interviewed aren't the target demographic. So it's really case closed.
you know, even through the whole debate - i think we're agreeing. the characters are canadian, though their style isn't. their aimed only at children - which is why these people don't like them. hmm...
With 30 percent if not 40 percent of Asians, how come the people interviewed are all caucasians ?? Same story on CTV. And as far as the woman saying they are goofy stupid ugly and not good at all, it's judgmental and hollow, go ahead design them, find an alternative !!!!
(Now a negative letter from the Province, Nov 30, Friday:)
Dumbing down
We've got the great, noble bear, the salmon, king of all game fish, the beautiful bald eagle...heck, we've even got the beaver. Yet all we offer the world are Pok[é]mon and Teletubbies knockoffs. Good going, folks. At least the dumbing down of society is well and good here in B.C. I'm embarrassed enough to move to a Third World country.
Well, Sumi and Miga are part-bears, I wouldn't want a hunted fish to represent, and the eagle's American. Beaver's used. Pokémon look even lamer. These looks like Teletubbies? You're high. And you're right, society IS dumbing down, but thanks to you.
I welcome the mascots...they are wonderful symbols...and do us proud...To the critics, I'd like to point out that the mascots...appeal to...the children of the world. Every time we move away from our traditional Canadian images of...beavers...we are vilified for not having creativity. Canada is no longer...fur traders, but [a] world community. It's about time we started showing ourselves as such.
From 24 Hours on Thursday (I'm just reporting what your newspapers think. Do not suspend me): WE HAVE A BEAR WITH THUNDERBIRD WINGS (and an orca hat?). And adjusted to the modern style! Those surveyors just seemed to be ethnocentric to their "disintegrating" culture... while ignoring the myths of the people they incaded.
Bah...those people miss the point of this completely. The mascots are mainly for the kids, and if the kids like them it's all that matters. And just in case you haven't noticed, this is the west coast. Our culture is hugely multi-cultural, and i think these characters represent that (they look more Korean than Japanese...). True, I'm not to keen on them, and i think a better job could've been done, (i like the sasquatch one though) but they are what they are, and stop with your idiotic bashing.
complete crap this is canada not japan leave the hello kittie style shite over there, wheres the canadian influence i bet these were made in richmond bc. How about a moose and or a beaver comercial garbage
Kids love anime. Make anime-like characters. Sell to kids around the world. Mission accomplished. Taxpayers no need to have another Montreal on their hands.
Just let the kids appreciate them and let it be. Can't believe adults are juggling words of contempt into mascots.
Goody Gravy, those people are all wrong, MIGA is the best one, it is a Killer Whale Mixed with the Kermode bear. What is better than an Orca Whale and a Bear. Quatchi is from a "MADE UP FICTIONAL" legendary creature. (Oh, here we go with the, and a ORCA AND A BEAR ISN"T) Good gravy atleast is is based off 2 REAL animals. Then the super magical Sumi, good gravy, NO.....lol My 2 cents, KEEP MIGA Scrap the others! XD
Hmm... I think you need to dwell in a little Indian mythology of sasquatchs and the totem pole. One of them actually had an orca top, wings of a thunderbird, the bottom was the feet of a black bear, and several other animals' heads/bodies/stuff in the middle. Just be glad VANOC didn't interpret the pole literally.
i think the mascots look dorky and cheesy, but so does every other mascot known to man. i think it's a prerequisite for being one. Must Be Cheesy and Disliked By Everyone Except Kids.
Exactly... they must have cut out the supporters, or didn't interview any Chinese/Japanese/Koreans. (I rarely see Asians interviewed on issues for their newspaper. I read their Wednesday edition, with both of the older women on the paper. "They're stupid. They're ugly. They're not good at all." Owch. Ms. Finlayson, do you have children?
Heh, it seems like it's the long-stayers of Vancouver that has a problem with it (subsequently being the only ones, I suspect, who would bother to be in the poll of a municipal newspaper)... but most of them did not bother to know more about the heritage of the people whose lands were invaded by those long-stayers.
OUCH. I feel sorry for the artists who designed these. They're moderately famous children's illustrators at this point. Hearing artistically saturated vancouver diss it must hurt, but I'm sure they have good self asteem :P
ya i like them, and their also based on Indian myths as well which just shows that they put a lot of time and information into creating these mascots.
By the way everyone, I'm sorry if it seemed like I repeatedly commented on this video. I was giving a response to each poster and because of YouTube's technicality, they pile up. I apologize for any potential confusion.
Not only has Native Lands been stolen to build venues for the Games, now the COC is gonna co-opt native imagery and symbols to score some merchandising cash with children??? This is dispicable. Could you imagine the uproar if China had Buddhist or Falun Gong inspired mascots??? This is a travesty.
Oh...and to top it off, what kind of sick and twisted genetically modified animals are the two non-Sasquatches??? Somethings wrong when Bigfoot is the most natural lookin dude in the crew.
(to uberskeptic:) It's nice for you to have respect for the Natives, then why don't you study about them? It is an Indian legend that killer whales transform to kermode bears upon reaching land, and there is a mystical creature, according to Indian mythology, with the wings of a thunderbird and the legs of a black bear. Go look up the official page, and maybe research more about Native culture.
I just hope people don't confuse accuracy in communicating native legends with genuine respect for native life...when the reality is forced relocation, gentrification and continued dismissal of land claims.
I know. I made a joke on another 2010 mascot-related video that is promotes New Age concepts and cloning, for anyone who isn't bothered enough to research on them.
Like Chinese art? The 2008 Beijing committee obviously had good thought on their mascots. Not only do they embody the Chinese heritage with the art style, they embrace the world with international costumes. (And a panda bear for those who aren't familiar.) The 2010 ones are vice versa. International art style, Native concepts.
I have no problem with native art, and these fucking things don't even come close. The inukshuk was bad enough, now this??? Vancouver Int'l Airport has native art, these things look like something drawn in my daughter's grade 3 class.
Then what do you want, then? Maybe Vancouver should have mascots for kids AND adults. Something to represent B.C.? Maybe Pamela Anderson at her prime! Or a Downtown Eastside stoner. Ooo, not very moral-lifting. Then our Primer should be our mascot with his cute glasses and white hair. Oh wait, he drove drunk in sunny Hawaii. Look it up.
Especially to the tourists. I'll admit: I actually thought the native art, the totem pole, was quite unappealing back when I was a kid. That's why the inukshuk and the mascots were simplistic. In the digital age, graphics like that needs to be simply animated, yet carry a bit of the representation.
This is stupid. First our logo sucks now our mascots. What would represent Vancouver better is Billy the BC Bud, a Kokanee can and Trevor Linden. F this asian crap.
Those Kokanee adverts are just copycats of American culture. Open up to the world! We can't remain white forever. More and more mixed couples are having kids, and in the end, we're one connected global village.
(to konyers88) I thought Miga might be a little too Japanese-y, but Sumi's the perfect (Para/O)lympic mascot. Cares about the environment, honours 'his' culture, raises awareness for paraplegics, has a pretty awesome thunderbird/bear combo (always an extra supernatural ability for the Paralympic mascot), and I predict it's gonna be the international favourite.
people who complain about mascots as being "too asian" or "too native" for BC or canada need to remember that what they grew up with has foreign roots too. should we stop ceremonies with bagpipes because they are "too scottish" to be canadian? basketball would be gone too! too american!
just look at the kids who love the mascots. they don't care if they look "too asian" or "too native". they just like them because they're made for for them, ALL of them.

-Pretty sure "asians" didn't form the Dominion of Canada.
-These mascots aren't just for little kids, people all over the world will now be viewing these pokemon looking things and wondering when Canada annexiated with Japan and China
-Then maybe you should kick out all the asians, including canadian-born, and change every single sports team in canada to be named after ONLY people who founded the dominion then? And if somebody is ignorant enough to think canada is part of japan or china based on a children's design, they're probably also too ignorant to realize that canadians don't live in igloos.
Canada's interests shouldn't reside in only pleasing a certain sub-culture. This goes back to what Bruce Allen had to say. Where is the majoriy "caucasian" interests represented in these characters?
"Sub-Culture"? The world loves anime, and that's pleasing the international community. As much as I hate to say it's a marketing ploy, it actually works.
Opinion. 92 out of 100 polled by the Province disliked the art style and characters. Goal for sales by VANOC: somewhere around 50 million. Thats a pretty lofty goal. China, with their superior numbers in population are aiming for around 46 with their homegrown anime. Something doesn't add up...
China's mascots aren't anime. Please research more about it before you claim something it is not. They are drawn in the Chinese art style, with the 'dolls' wearing international costumes (even one wore Aztec ornaments)! And if 92% of those who actually bothered to participate in a newspaper vote dislike it, I don't think most of them are children. Anyway, who cares about the inukshuk logo now? It's all about international marketing. Can't believe we're all heated up on dolls and cartoons.
"Losing our culture"? Which culture is that? The culture of wealthy caucasion male lawyers and politicians? Maybe we should all start wearing top-hats and big mutton-chop beards because the founding fathers of Canada did.
"Canadian culture" is multiculturalism. Immigrants from all over have been populating North America for centuries. To think that our culture is based on that of white Europeans is not even backwards, it's WRONG. Because it never was in the first place.
Yeah, I wouldn't want another polar bear or beaver. No more Euro-American dominance. No more "the Straight Christian White Male rules us all" crap. We're a global village. To hell with the ethnocentricity. And to hell with stereotypes and discrimination. Everyone should be able to spread their culture across the world.

Is this for real? You gotta be kidding me, Homosexual Asian cartoons symbolise the Canadian nation and city of Vancouver? Well, I guess when you think about it that way it makes sense... I for one am embarrassed!!
Well, a lot of kids (and girls) love anime. The anime-style represents the multiculturalism of Vancouver, and the fact that they used the sasquatch and the thunderbird shows respect to Native culture and mysticism. Though the art is simple, the concept is quite sophisticated. And it isn't lamey-o like the German hotdog or the 1984 LA patriot. And please stop with the Caucasian ethnocentricity...
Oh, and they're homosexual! We forgot. Males aren't supposed to be friends based upon the possibility one or many could suddenly start having gay sex for no perticular reason whatsoever. Additionally they're asian evil stay away oh noes.
I agree (imo) that the mascots are dumb-looking (see comment above)... but how does that make them homosexual? I'm all for representation... but you might have well said "gay" (which is NOT a synonym for "stupid", btw). So how does this make them gay?
What's really said is when gay-bashing for the sake of slinging insults makes it into the media. I forget his name, but that acerbic editorialist from the Vancouver Sun wrote in his front page article yesterday that Miga's scarf looks "gay" - if she were a he. Come on, now! An article of clothing associated with sexual preference. Next he'll say wearing mittens makes you a dirty hippie.
All this hate directed towards those smiling faces. What a shame.
And we're supposed to be a city that is tolerant to the LGBT community. We even hold pride parades, and I am proud myself to say that we're a city that (at least) has people who refrain from laughing at those paraders, if there were anyone like those filth. And with 24 Hours (I'll post portions of it here) raging on with their selective editorial letters (I sent quite a bit already), I don't see how the city can stop being hypocritical.
There is ALOT more to the Vancouver Olympic Spirit than the Haida, there's the countless groups of First peoples in the lower mainland itself.
The spirit of the native peoples is heavily influential on the mascots themselves, a Thunder Bird, a Sea Bear, a Sasquatch, the Animal Spirits, its all related.
this is by far such an anti-olympic biased report.
Of course! They never bothered to ask an Asian, but two older women who definitely never gave a thought about our children. I thought the artistic style was very simple and cosmopolitan, and Sumi has a lot of morals that we can learn from: Native heritages, "flying" when you really can't (the Paralympic mascot always has a special power), environmentalism, so on. And one more time... ready?
MASCOTS ARE FOR KIDS!
(At least they didn't mess'em up like the London logo or the Athens mascots.)
It's a pretty poor report overall. Count on 24 Hours for genuine, unbiased journalism.
It's like that woman wants a anthropomorphized Emily Carr painting as the mascot. "Come on, we're creative people!" They're just cartoon characters for children!
XD Well we accept a lot of groups that Americans consider as "primitive", "immoral", or "uncivilized", then what about these mascots with the international flavour?
vanoc already said that their target audience for the mascots are kids. and the kids do love them. good job vanoc! and who in the world doesn't like a cartoon sasquatch?!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think its awful. And why do we want to go haida either ? not everyone is native, i think it should have been something more BC, like a cougar, a moose, an orca...thats just an orca, a grizzly something a little better than anime characters. Just sad. And Vancouver isnt cold in the winter.
1) The Asian/anime concept was supposed to make the 'international concept' of the Olympics alive. Since Vancouver has a strong Asian minority, these mascots ARE representing the people of Vancouver. I'm hearing a lot of Western ethnocentricity...
2) The mascots are for kids... they're supposed to be cute and cuddly.
I will not tolerate the likes of you. The world is becoming a global village, and it is absolutely your fault if you can't get a job because a Chinese has a better resumé. No wonder you couldn't spell 'majority'. At least those mascots would sell better...
Ultimately, the mascots proved to be a huge success with kids. I initially thought they were not that great but compared to other games in other cities,Vancouver hit it outta the park. The games themselves were impressive. I was pretty anti-olympics as I knew from early on that it would be a huge financial loss for us in BC and that we'd be paying for several more decades.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago
Yes, ask the white people only. They do represent the whole population after all.
For the record, I am from Vancouver and I like our mascots, especially Miga.

You can't please everyone but when it comes down to it if the kids love them that's all that matters.
troubles03 4 years ago 3
Man how stupid can these people be? Have they even seen some of the mascots from other Olympics? Every Olympics has cartoon characters. These are easily the best Olympic mascots ever created. What is better than a hockey playing Sasquatch like how much more Canadian can that get. What did they really want another boring beaver like Montreal? Look at the past winter Olympics in Torino they had an ice cube and a snowball for mascots; and people are complaining about these ones wow.

Now if I'm correct, Sasquatch ate children. Hmph, it's a bit insulting to the natives.

I can understand what they were going for with these designs. The only character I think people can identify with are the genuine Sasquatch, since the other two are just a few things sloppily thrown together. As far as that one women's idea that the characters should be more native is insulting! Haven't the natives of this land been disenfranchised enough? If you want the truth, none of this inspires me to partake in this awful waste of tax payer dollars they call the Olympics.
takotheoktopus 4 years ago
we have so many great animals in BC - why can't we take one of them (the eagle or something) and turn it into a great mascot? instead of some childish (yes cute) and anime things...
Jade7272 4 years ago
Hey, the provincial animal (Spirit Bear) is Miga, who's also a hybrid orca. In Native mythology, killer whales apparently turn into bears upon reaching land. And the thunderbird is another Native symbol. There are totem poles with features of bears and eagles, and Sumi represents that. And the Sasquatch is the world-renowned Bigfoot.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago
only thing, they don't look like any of those. if they did those animals or spirits in a style that isn't so anime-ish, i think people would like them more.
Jade7272 4 years ago
The "anime-ish" art style is to represent global tolerance of modern foreign culture. If no one gave a rat's ass about it, that means we're tolerant.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago
it has nothing to do with tolerance. we are a very tolerant country, but the point is, people think they are too anime-ish and childish. people just want something that stands more for canada. i don't think it's right to take the aboriginal spirits and make them anime. it doesn't seem respectful.
Jade7272 4 years ago
"people think they are too anime-ish and childish"
Well, it's for the kids. If there are adults which are actually attracted in mascots like children do, then that's quite a problem. And since anime, regardless of its origin, is an international phenomenon that young people around the world universally adores, then it's a good marketing method. And remember, the Aboriginal/Haida art form is difficult to broadcast or reproduce in this digital age. Simpler vectors are more economical.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago
You have a point with them being simpler and easier to reproduce. But I still think they should have spent the extra time to make them in the Aboriginal/Haida art forms. It being for the kids has kind of limited their marketing thing, and when they ask older women and men then the majority of them are going to not like it.
PS - I was talking to the International Students during their ESL class and they didn't like the fact that Canada seems to have copied them (their words, not mine).
Jade7272 4 years ago
Even I can't think of an original character to attract all ages. Unless we give Dreamworks Pictures a whole bunch of dough and make Shrek our corporate mascot.
"PS - I was talking to the International Students during their ESL class and they didn't like the fact that Canada seems to have copied them (their words, not mine)."
Canada copied the stylings of modern Japanese art, though it has been imported, adapted, and exploited internationally. Anime really is a symbol of a global village.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago
Anime, a symbol of a global village. Most characters were designed to be racially ambiguous. That's one factor. Globalization (import) and localization (dubbing) of anime series have proved popular in foreign entertainment, and anime was no exception. "Glocalization" was a term that combined the two above, which means that imports are merely dubbed to maximize its popularity with, let's say, the American 5-12 year old demographic. That's why Pokémon was a billion-dollar hit.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago
(Continuing from last replies) Because of this glocalization process that anime purists obviously despise, anime is now an international hit & it's culturally significant in Japan's modern history. And the world's. Naturally, the IOC/VANOC'd want to attract a global crowd. Though the heritage isn't represented through the style, but the characters are. Native legends back up Miga/Sumi's hybrid form and Quatchi's the Sasquatch. Oh wait, Sumi's orca hat is quite Haida-ish.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago
"Though the heritage isn't represented through the style, but the characters are." Yes, I agree with you. And as i said at the beginning - the character's are canadian - i don't think the people interviewed are against the characters - i don't think they like the anime style...
Jade7272 4 years ago
"Canada copied the stylings of modern Japanese art, though it has been imported, adapted, and exploited internationally. Anime really is a symbol of a global village."
And the people interviewed aren't the target demographic. So it's really case closed.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago
you know, even through the whole debate - i think we're agreeing. the characters are canadian, though their style isn't. their aimed only at children - which is why these people don't like them. hmm...
Jade7272 4 years ago
With 30 percent if not 40 percent of Asians, how come the people interviewed are all caucasians ?? Same story on CTV. And as far as the woman saying they are goofy stupid ugly and not good at all, it's judgmental and hollow, go ahead design them, find an alternative !!!!

PenaltyKillah 4 years ago
My response:
Well, Sumi and Miga are part-bears, I wouldn't want a hunted fish to represent, and the eagle's American. Beaver's used. Pokémon look even lamer. These looks like Teletubbies? You're high. And you're right, society IS dumbing down, but thanks to you.

Creative mascots
I welcome the mascots...they are wonderful symbols...and do us proud...To the critics, I'd like to point out that the mascots...appeal to...the children of the world. Every time we move away from our traditional Canadian images of...beavers...we are vilified for not having creativity. Canada is no longer...fur traders, but [a] world community. Sir, if you a Vancouver native, would you please be so kind to know the Native culture? And what does your kid think then?

Bah...those people miss the point of this completely. The mascots are mainly for the kids, and if the kids like them it's all that matters. And just in case you haven't noticed, this is the west coast. Our culture is hugely multi-cultural, and i think these characters represent that (they look more Korean than Japanese...). Then the super magical Sumi, good gravy, NO.....lol My 2 cents, KEEP MIGA Scrap the others! XD

Hmm... I think you need to dwell in a little Indian mythology of sasquatchs and the totem pole. Just be glad VANOC didn't interpret the pole literally.

Oh...and to top it off, what kind of sick and twisted genetically modified animals are the two non-Sasquatches??? Somethings wrong when Bigfoot is the most natural lookin dude in the crew.
uberskeptic 4 years ago
(to uberskeptic:) It's nice for you to have respect for the Natives, then why don't you study about them? It is an Indian legend that killer whales transform to kermode bears upon reaching land, and there is a mystical creature, according to Indian mythology, with the wings of a thunderbird and the legs of a black bear. Go look up the official page, and maybe research more about Native culture.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago 2
Point taken.
I just hope people don't confuse accuracy in communicating native legends with genuine respect for native life...when the reality is forced relocation, gentrification and continued dismissal of land claims.

343Typhoon 4 years ago
Like Chinese art? The 2008 Beijing committee obviously had good thought on their mascots. Not only do they embody the Chinese heritage with the art style, they embrace the world with international costumes. (And a panda bear for those who aren't familiar.) The 2010 ones are vice versa. International art style, Native concepts.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago 2
I have no problem with native art, and these fucking things don't even come close. The inukshuk was bad enough, now this??? Vancouver Int'l Airport has native art, these things look like something drawn in my daughter's grade 3 class.
docforrest 4 years ago
Then what do you want, then? Maybe Vancouver should have mascots for kids AND adults. Something to represent B.C.? Maybe Pamela Anderson at her prime! Or a Downtown Eastside stoner. Ooo, not very moral-lifting. Then our Primer should be our mascot with his cute glasses and white hair. Oh wait, he drove drunk in sunny Hawaii. Look it up.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago 2
That's like saying to Beijing: your mascots should be on a rotiserie. Each country has its flaws, why would you emphasize them.
343Typhoon 4 years ago
Then what would be a better mascot that would represent Vancouver, Canada, and the international spirit of whatever the IOC wants to promote?
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago
OBVIOUSLY they are not supposed to be replicas of native artwork!!! how appealing to kids would that be?
missgeorge 4 years ago 2
Especially to the tourists. I'll admit: I actually thought the native art, the totem pole, was quite unappealing back when I was a kid. That's why the inukshuk and the mascots were simplistic. In the digital age, graphics like that needs to be simply animated, yet carry a bit of the representation.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago
This is stupid. First our logo sucks now our mascots. What would represent Vancouver better is Billy the BC Bud, a Kokanee can and Trevor Linden. F this asian crap.
343Typhoon 4 years ago
Those Kokanee adverts are just copycats of American culture. Open up to the world! We can't remain white forever. More and more mixed couples are having kids, and in the end, we're one connected global village.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago 2
Quatchi is awesome. Those two women(1:23) are so dumb and ugly, that dog at the end is much more attractive and smart.
konyers88 4 years ago 3
(to konyers88) I thought Miga might be a little too Japanese-y, but Sumi's the perfect (Para/O)lympic mascot. Cares about the environment, honours 'his' culture, raises awareness for paraplegics, has a pretty awesome thunderbird/bear combo (always an extra supernatural ability for the Paralympic mascot), and I predict it's gonna be the international favourite.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago
they rock!
people who complain about mascots as being "too asian" or "too native" for BC or canada need to remember that what they grew up with has foreign roots too. should we stop ceremonies with bagpipes because they are "too scottish" to be canadian? basketball would be gone too! too american!
just look at the kids who love the mascots. they don't care if they look "too asian" or "too native". they just like them because they're made for for them, ALL of them.

-These mascots aren't just for little kids, people all over the world will now be viewing these pokemon looking things and wondering when Canada annexiated with Japan and China
343Typhoon 4 years ago
-Then maybe you should kick out all the asians, including canadian-born, and change every single sports team in canada to be named after ONLY people who founded the dominion then? Canada's interests shouldn't reside in only pleasing a certain sub-culture. This goes back to what Bruce Allen had to say. Where is the majoriy "caucasian" interests represented in these characters?
343Typhoon 4 years ago
"Sub-Culture"? The world loves anime, and that's pleasing the international community. As much as I hate to say it's a marketing ploy, it actually works.
PenaltyKillah 4 years ago 3
Opinion. 92 out of 100 polled by the Province disliked the art style and characters. Goal for sales by VANOC: somewhere around 50 million. Thats a pretty lofty goal. China, with their superior numbers in population are aiming for around 46 with their homegrown anime. Something doesn't add up...
343Typhoon 4 years ago
China's mascots aren't anime. Please research more about it before you claim something it is not. They are drawn in the Chinese art style, with the 'dolls' wearing international costumes (even one wore Aztec ornaments)! And if 92% of those who actually bothered to participate in a newspaper vote dislike it, I don't think most of them are children. Anyway, who cares about the inukshuk logo now? It's all about international marketing. Can't believe we're all heated up on dolls and cartoons.

Well, a lot of kids (and girls) love anime. There is ALOT more to the Vancouver Olympic Spirit than the Haida, there's the countless groups of First peoples in the lower mainland itself.
The spirit of the native peoples is heavily influential on the mascots themselves, a Thunder Bird, a Sea Bear, a Sasquatch, the Animal Spirits, its all related.
this is by far such an anti-olympic biased report.
ccheng21 4 years ago 7
And one more time... ready?
