because when you drum you have a dominant hand that can keep the beat while you hit other ones you'll see that the pattern will be like blue then both blue and green he keeps a steady beat with his left hand cuz thats his dominant hand. rightys will be yellow then yellow/red so they can keep a steady beat with their right hand. not all leftys will play on lefty. it just depends on the dominant hand.

I had trouble with that to, what I found I was doing wrong was that I was hitting it too slow and once I hit it faster it became much easier, so that might work for you.
