buddy.. That's a close one. Better get some snow tires on til the snowy weather passes. You'll gambling with you life and others in situations like that. Hope you have a safe Holiday season.
@bimmersgarage The car has four brand new Yokohama high-perf all-season tires and steelies on it, but the big problem is that I've stripped the thing out, no back seat, passenger seat, climate control, radio, spare kit, electrics, or anything. It only weighs ~2150LBs (according to a hydraulic lift, not sure how accurate) and is really only meant for the track. I was caught out in the snow with the ~12LB rims and summer tires once, that was a nightmare. It's why I have four cars.
OK, then it's the continued locked up rear tires that caused loss of rear lateral stability. ABS, or you pumping the brakes would or should have released them enough to help them keep tracking largely straight. You MAY have a rear brake problem or poorly designed rear brakes. Example: 1980 Chevy Citations were notorious for the rear brakes not immediately releasing when you lifted off the brake pedal.
The rotation of the tires would free any accumulation of ice, snow, and dirt. You should shift to neutral or push in the clutch while braking like that. ABS WOULD have helped you here; it's the uneven side to side braking that largely caused your instability.
@snowrocket I only braked when in a straight line (threshold braking), I know that braking while the car is slipping sideways will cause loss of control. I had just come off of a dirt road where there was plenty of mud, gravel, and snow to cause friction on my tires, it's happened before. The initial slide at the top of the hill was one or both of the rear tires locking up on their own, and they remained locked throughout braking. If I had ABS, the front tires would not have locked when needed.
As a Californian driver, I would probably slammed on the brakes and crash right into oncoming traffic. You did a great job controlling your car. :)

@wootness3000
2150lbs...That's amazing! Impressive..
Well, good to see you and your ride made it out unscathed.
bimmersgarage 1 year ago
@bimmersgarage Well it only weighed 2900LBs to start with. xD But you can definitely feel the lack of weight in acceleration and cornering.
I just realized this video was before I had the headunit and front two speakers out of the car.
