  • Well first of all, the Key Commands link doesn't work anymore. ):

Second, I've been wanting to get into Roguelikes and whatnot, but I need help understanding all the ASCII and Keys and whatnot. I've mainly been wanting to play this (ADOM) and Dwarf Fortress. Do you have any tips on memorizing the controls and what everything is in the game(s)?

  • ADOM is more of a "standard" roguelike than dwarffortress. Anyway, ADOM has -lots- of depth too, and is easily the most detailed and athmospheric roguelike, with lots of quest, several storylines. You can't read information about a monster's kids, but you can read alot of info about them still ;D

  • i would agree with ADOM being more atmospheric - df feels so empty becuase all the people are randomly generated and when they talk they sound like tools...

but id say df is more detailed. it has a complete biblography of every inhabitant, including the dragons and wolves, and details everything major since their birth

  • crap! what do i do if im bleeding?

  • If your character is bleeding, you have three options:

    1) Hope it stops on its own.

    2) Press "a" to bring up your skill screen, and if you have it, use the First Aid skill, which may or may not work, depending on how advanced the skill is and how lucky you are.

    3) "Shift + u" to select a "bandage" to use.

    Good luck. :D

If YOU are bleeding, apply pressure to the wounded area, and if it doesn't stop, go to the hospital. ;)

  • yeah. i lost health all the way to 1 p, then a rat came up behind me and killed me.

Also, are there any towns other than terinyo?

  • There's a few, I suppose. All-in-all though, the Draklor chain doesn't have too many population centers, considering how many darned monsters there are. :|

    *SPOILERS*

To the SW of Terinyo is a little bandit village that has a shop and some other stuff in it. The's the High Mountain village, accessible from the small cave to the NW of Terinyo, eventually. And finally, there's Dwarftown in the Caverns of Chaos.

  • Hehe, press a to open skill-screen and use firstaid after you take damage. Or use a healing potion/eat something that heals. Or 'u'se bandage. Most likely since you ask this though, you were too low level to be able to do any of these things, so then you're pretty much doomed with a bleeding-wound.

  • Also, can you tell me what are the requirements to get Treasure Hunter Talent?

  • Absolutely -- Treasure Hunter requires you to get "Alert" (ONLY available when generating your character, and NOT available later in the game, so get it when you're building a new character!) and "Miser" beforehand.

I get it every time now when I play, and it really does seem to pay off.

  • which ine is better swarf fortress or adom?

  • I've not played swarf fortress, so I couldn't say for sure. :)

  • whoops its dwarf fortress

  • Yeah, I haven't played that either.

Actually, ADOM is the only game of this type that I've ever played.

  • id say dwarf fortress is better, becuase the world is more detailed. on df you can even read about that goblin you killed, his parents, and even his children

  • ah! I could never figure out dwarf fortress (II) but I liked making characters and then wandering aimlessly through the wilderness.

  • Do you have any advice for me? I never did make it any far to the game, only as far as a Lvl 15 Hurthling Monk, but he died to the master necromancer...

  • Well, it's a pretty rough game all-around, and to be honest, I'm not very good at it. Level 15's not too bad, really...

I guess the best advice I can give is to try not to do anything too reckless. In terms of getting further in the game, a lot of people who've played it a lot will say that some of the strongest characters are Troll healers, since they recover HP at a high rate AND are literate. Their biggest drawback is, of course, that they don't level nearly as quickly as some races do.

  • Really, you're awesome. You never give up to the game. You keel trying. That trollish healer, Frank V, of yours rocks so hard! Thanks for the advice AND your videos!

    Keep on going.

  • Heh heh,

Gray Elf Wizard with Treasure Hunter Talent. Exactly the kind of a character I make all the time.

  • i'm downloading this game!

  • Right on! I do warn you that it's CRAZY hard and unfair a lot of the time -- there's a strong chance that YOU WILL die a lot. Still, it can be a lot of fun, and really quite addicting. Let us know how you're making out. :)

I know that Aquas, another person I turned on to ADOM, has been having a lot of fun with this gem so far as well.

  • Well, its not CRAZY hard, after getting some experience winning with a wizard is pretty much elementary, and so is troll beastfighters or healers.

  • I have finished this game like 50+ times(at least including Andor ending ofc).It will never make your boring!I guarantee

  • Magic Missile! Yes!

"The Adventures of Frank"...abruptly end? Aww...
