@cityscape17 Actually, Mike and Peter played guitar and wrote songs, so half the group WERE real musicians. Mike wrote several songs that became minor hits; the one I remember best is "Listen to the Band." Peter was really a pretty amazing guitarist (when he wasn't stoned), and he wrote what became the closing credit song in the second and final season of the show. Anyway, I just wanted to make it known that they DID play instruments on most of the recordings, and they really sang.

@cityscape17 no it's not true. Yes, the Monkees were technically the first American Boy band, but they did play their instruments, and fairly well I might add. There's nothing wrong with liking a cover version more than the original, but saying they shouldn't have the rights to their own song and that they shouldn't be considered a band just makes you sound ignorant.
