To say that Peggy's one sided daisies graphically reveal how consciousness is a construct of the brain is wrong. It could just mean that consciousness is "managed" by the brain in a certain way, like the body map manages consciousness. And when Ramachandran says that blind sight is unconscious, he is also wrong. It just means that consciousness is different to what we thought it was. You can't be aware of something without being conscious of it, that's a paradox.
The only thing I disagree with during the mirror experiments was that he was able to touch the glass, learn from it, and change his behavior. The mirror should have been held further away so that he wouldn't be able to tap the glass, *LEARN* that it's a mirror (at least learn it so quickly), and then modify his behavior. I'm probably nitpicking and it wouldn't really change the results of the experiment, but still, I feel like tapping the glass is cheating.
I'm a psychology student, and anosognosia is terrifying to me. I'm surprised there aren't any neuropsychology-based horror films, ones that I can think of anyway :P
What happens after stroke and what to do about it (neglect, visual attention, how it works, fails, leads to learning problems such as dyslexia and other phenomenon and what to do about it). Search "Dr. Laurie Cestnick" "Harvard University" on youtube for a video. Happy holidays!
I know it's kind of insensitive to the people who have this condition, but I would love to experience this firsthand, just to understand what it's like
this raises a question in my mind...why are all animals directed "forward" I mean, for example, why dont we have eyes to the back or right or left of our heads?
Not all animals eyes are directed fowards. That is a predatory trait that has to do with sight related focus which helps hunting to be more sucessful.
Jumping spiders (I think) have eyes pointing forwards, upwards, and to either side, but the forward ones are most sensitive and have some ability to see colors. So I think those help them hunt, or help it see what it's moving toward, but the others serve a defensive purpose.
Metaphysically speaking, I wonder if Graham, Bill, and Peggy were the kind of personality that always thinks they are right. Perhaps they are absolutist, "my way or the highway" types and thus they became so close-minded that this lack of balance manifested as a stroke which would make them always and only right. Of course, this would only be anecdotal and not scientific.
I think you might be mixing up cause and effect. It makes sense to me that someone with this sort of injury would have trouble seeing things the way other people do, but not that an attitude like that would cause their injuries.
Perhaps you assume that causes are physical. Nothing visible is a cause. Indeed, if it can be seen, it is not a cause. The unseen manifests that it may be known.
Look around you. Nothing that you see owes its inception to the visible. Every chair, desk, house was a thought in some designer's head. Every tree is the result of---not the seed---but the invisible life w/in the seed. You aren't an effect of a sperm piercing an ovum, for it was unseen desire which CAUSED its ejaculation.
Hey Lenny great post! You seem to have many videos regarding psychology, the brain, science etc. Are you studying or working in any of the industries or are you a facinated layman like me? Do you know of any online programs one can take to get a better understanding of this and possibly work in of of the fields assisting? Thanks bud!
I'm an undergraduate college student majoring in philosophy who wants to specialize in philosophy of mind. So... I guess that means I'm between being a "fascinated layman" and wanting to actually pursue this stuff for my career. I might try to do neuroscience stuff from grad school, but that might not work out.
And, no, I don't know of any programs online concerning this stuff, but I'm sure if you look around you could find some online college courses or even just the audio of them on torrents somewhere.
Total blindness to everything on the left and a delusional exaggeration of one's own capabilities; OMG, did anyone ever think of checking George Bush for this!!
Lets bring a half naked fellow in front of Daisy...
Lets find out if she notices that he is not weary anything on his left body ...?

What would happen if she drew the daisy with her left hand? Would it change at all?
xSilverPhinx 2 years ago
she is unaware of her left side, so i don't think that she even could draw with her left hand.

Eyes facing forward gives depth perception. Fish have eyes to either side and cannot percieve depth.
