@icannn206 ok he's good, but 34 points on a good game shooting mostly three's? Pete Maravich in college averaged 44 points a game WITHOUT 3 point line, if he had 34 he would have an off night. Larry Bird is a fucking beast and they both dominate much more than this kid. Jimmer is a good shooter, but he is no match for the Legends.
@icannn206 lets look at your stupidity. Pete invented most of the moves that players use today, and dont give me that crap that Jordan invented everything, cuz he got most of his stuff from Dr. J. PLUS he would have a 3 point line, so he would shoot more from there. LSU's coach looked at every one of Pete's games from LSU and measured that with a 3-point line, he would have averaged 57 a game. But ur right because Pete would be like 60 years old and couldnt move.

@zackboum They took him in the 78 draft after his junior year, under what was known as the "junior eligible" rule, though they didn't know if he would go back to school. He went back and played his senior season. The Celtics had until the 79 draft to sign him or he could have entered the draft and been taken by another team. They made him the highest paid rookie to that date and signed him before the 79 draft. The NBA since changed the rule so you can't take a player before theyre ready to sign.
@thehumburger Thank you for the response. So he was only the 6th pick because the other teams weren't sure if they could sign him before the next draft?
@ghettomane1 I'm pretty sure he said 60 to 70 in a row. Bird's shooting proficiency is the stuff of legend. If researched, you will find teammates and reporters who witnessed Bird practicing and just drilling shot after shot without missing. I have a clipping from a Boston paper where after making a small wager Bird made 150 consecutive freethrows. He had an uncanny touch and great range for a player his size.
Bird hurt his shooting index finger playing in a softball game while in college just before he turned pro. He said he could never shoot as well as he did before. He crushed his knuckle. You'll notice it when he holds up the #1 sign, how bent his finger is.
I believe you, but my mind just can't imagine Larry Bird shooting better...How does one shoot better than Larry Bird? That's like trying to imagine the earth without its oceans, rivers and seas and stuff like that.
Forget that. What about the Indiana State Sycamores? They were never a contending team before Larry Bird and haven't been one since Larry Bird. Enough said.
You can't be in the NBA and be a terrible athlete. Look at the highight of Bird dunking on Caldwell Jones, a noted shotblocker. You have to be able to jump to do that. Look at all the steals that he got by playing the passing lane. You have to have at least sufficient foot speed in order to do that. Larry Bird was never a terrible athlete. He and Karl Malone actually recorded the same vertical jump height.
why do people have to make this a racial thing? black or white, he is the one of the greatest basketball players ever... he could be purple and he'd still be awesome.
Its like a blind person...they say that blind people other 4 senses are heightened b/c they have to use them more.... that's probably the best way to describe why bird embarrassed even the best athletes. Bird was going to beat 9 out of 10 times...period. Probably the best psychological advanced opponent in pro sports history.
Larry Bird led the nation in scoring and rebounding when he was a junior (back when players stayed all 4 years in college). Red Auerbach drafted him as a junior for the Celtics even though Bird was going to play another year at Indiana State. It was the Bird drafting that starting the whole, "declaring for the draft" set of rules.
Larry Bird once walked into the locker room before the all-star game 3 point contest and asked, which one of you guys is coming in second. He later one that contest. he also won all the other 3 point contests he participated in. Larry Bird is the man.
The thing with Larry is that while he couldn't jump, he could run like a deer, was wiry strong, and had great stamina. He was athletic in a different sense.
well, just hang on there my friend, there's a song said........."dont worry about a thing, every lil thing, is gonna be alright" hahahahaha. can u believe dat i just sing a song!!! just carried away. anyway ur right, we all trying to make the world a better place for everyone of us. i really do,
What is it with you American's and your obsession with race? It's pathetic who honestly gives a flying f... what colour someone is apart from you lot? That's why you're going downhill you have no unity. Bird = quality, fact
HAHAHA at Vick the greatest QB. And a bigger laugh to the inclusion of WWE in an argument for athleticism. And what about swimming? Pretty sure thats a big part of the Olympics, and Phelps, Spitz and Thorpe are rather pale...
@u2cruiser7230 Does your white best friend know that you think blacks are physically superior? If he knows that and is cool with it than he is a sucker. Believe me man, their is absolutely no difference physically between whites and blacks. That is a scientific fact. A lot of blacks don't have the opportunities whites have as far as education in America so they figure sports is the only way out. Try a little harder to think of yourself as a human being rather than a part of the best race.
@Flipper79able That's not necessarily true. It's debatable what physical "superiority" actually means, but it's very possible that blacks on average are healthier physically. It just has to do with natural selection. For the better part of the last few centuries, b/c of living standards, only the most physically fit of blacks survived to adulthood and beyond. This is less true among whites, where medicine and other factors kept even the weak alive.
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD The average height for blacks in America is five foot ten inches the same as the average height of a white man. These are polls taken by the government and are very accurate. This crackpot theory about whites getting more medicine is bullshit......we live in the same country and anyone can go to the hospital if they are sick. I have so many doctors bills that I haven't paid off it's ridiculous. Anyway blacks and whites in this country are the same size on average.
@Flipper79able I'm talking about blacks that only a few centuries ago survived in the jungles of Africa and later died by the boatloads as slaves throughout the Americans. Their CHILDREN were more physically fit b/c of the natural selection I was talking about.
Blacks having access to equal medicine within the last century or so really won't reverse these natural adaptations yet. It takes generations.
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD Look man. I know you think your on to something but talk to any doctor who studies humans in this country and they will tell you there is no difference between humans in this country. Nice try.
@Flipper79able Uh, I'm not trying to get "on to something." I'm just telling you how science works. Lol feel free to argue with facts.
What does "there is no difference between humans in this country" even mean? If you have no reasonable knowledge to bank on except sweeping generalizations, then don't even try. If I just point out that humans don't all have the same skin pigmentation your statement is already shot down.
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD Oh, give me a break. Why do I have to explain what I mean?Did you forget what we were talking about? When I said there is no difference between humans in this country, I was talking about things that pertain to size and athleticism. Let's try to focus here. I also don't think you know what your talking about when you say "I'm just telling you how science works". You don't know that, it's a theory you have. There is no difference between blacks and whites athletically. I'm done
@Flipper79able Really? Why are nearly all of the fastest up and coming sprinters in the wold today all from Jamaica? There are very real and tangible genetic differences accounting for what makes the best pure athletes on this planet. To say otherwise is pure stupidity.
@ferrarif40 I agree. I take my statement back. By the way........do you know the exact reason why some of the fastest sprinters are from Jamaica.......Mr. Unbelievably wise and almighty person?
@Flipper79able No I haven't cracked the genetic code so I'm not privy to that information, I can however look at the information before me. Jamaica has far less than 1% of the world's population yet they are the most competitive sprinters the world has ever seen. What else can you deduce from that? Clearly there is something going on, either they have access to a new super grade of undetectable drugs (unlikely, this is Jamaica we're talking about) or they've evolved to run... fast.
@ferrarif40 Well think about this. Take boxing. In the early 1900's a lot of boxers were not only black but Irish and Italian. Have blacks evolved genetically sense the early 1900's? No,many white Irish and Italians no longer live in ghettoes and fight for scraps like they used to. They have moved up the scale economically in this country and grow up in privileged areas where they have more options with education and money. People generally box when they have few options. Same with other sports.
@Flipper79able What does boxing have to do with running? Boxers are sorted out socioeconomically because you must sacrifice your body to achieve greatness (literally being beaten down). This stigma doesn't exist with running. If wealthy white adolescents had the genetic makeup to be the best runners in the world, they undoubtedly would be. Do you know how much money preppy white parents spend on training for their cross country athletes? A lot. Yet the best long distance runners are Kenyan.
@ferrarif40 I knew you would say what does boxing have to with running. It's the same fucking thing. It's the same with all Athletes from an early age black kids get it in their minds that athletics is the only way out of the economic situation due to poor schooling, no job opportunities, discrimination, ect. White kids are taught to like sports but buckle down at school and if they play sports in college get a degree and concentrate on a real job because if they get hurt, no more money.
@Flipper79able No it's not at all. Boxing is far less based on genetic talent than running is and there are socioeconomic stigmas surrounding it. Why do you have such a problem admitting that biological differences exist on Earth? You a white supremacist or the kid that didn't make the team because of "reverse racism?" I honestly don't get it, you're trying to deny things that are so obviously happening. Do you even believe in evolution?
@ferrarif40 How can you ask if I'm a white supremacist, I am the one saying all races are the same and there is no difference but I guess that makes me racist? You are the one saying black people are genetically superior, if anyone is a racist it's you, I am also not the kid who didn't make the team because of reverse racism. Show me scientific evidence that one race is faster or stronger and I will agree. Some races are taller than others on average..but that's it. Show me a link for evidence.
@ferrarif40 By the way I do believe in evolution. 30 or 40 years ago white people were just as prominent in sports as blacks. Why not so much anymore? If you know anything about evolution than you would know it is impossible for a race to evolve over a 40 year span. So why are there so many blacks in sports and so few whites? There has to be other factors involved..... like the ones I was talking about.
@u2cruiser7230 How can Michael Vick be even considered the best NLF QB ever? He has not done anything yet. I agree with you when mention Jordan, Kobe, Willie, Hank, Ali, but Vick not yet anyway. When he wins some superbowls maybe then. But right now in my humble opinion...Terry Bradshaw, Troy Aikman who have super bowl wins should be at least considered.
@u2cruiser7230 OMG...Michael Vick???? I can tell from the nature of the post that you are a complete idiot. But c'mon about the Michael Vick shit. He's never even been to a SuperBowl. Not to mention, his best season, last year,he was injured and didn't even play all the games. Why not say "best NFL reciever ever=Jerry Rice, or Running Backs=Walter Payton and Barry Sanders,or Linebacker=Lawrence Taylor"...At least then you would prove your point without looking like a complete RETARD!
Larry Bird was one of the greatest. Unbelievable. I hated him because he was a Celtic and he was cold-blooded. If he was on a team I liked, I would have loved him. This racial thing still bothers me.The announcers used to say Larry was great because of his smarts and work ethic while great black players had God-given talent. BS -as if what Larry had wasn't talent too. So lots of blacks said things like Isaiah said and hated Larry because in a sense, he really was a "white hope". Not his fault.
When Bird was in HS, he could jump & touch the TOP of the backboard square, and could make several reverse and 360 jams. But, he injured his back prior to joining the IS Sycamores, and had to ALTER his game immensely into what is always best remembered of him. So, when he injured his back in 1991, it was an OLD injury. If Bird never had back problems, he could've played well into his late 30's, and go down as the BEST basketball player ever. He's still considered by many as the best ever.
as far as Bird's racial comments, sometimes people don't like the truth-tho Larry was off on 'always a black man's game' plenty of great white euros and white MVP's now
considering how the poor guy got hounded about being 'the Great White Hope' the fact that that's all he said people could get pissed about tells me Bird couldn't care less about color
80's & 90's NBA golden age-for some reason I don't care about the NBA or boxing anymore, and this rules crap is ruining the NFL for me too
On Isaiah's 'only cause he's white' comment, you have to remember it was after Bird just ripped his heart out on the court with a bitter last second loss. So I have a little sympathy for Isaiah, but still a dumbass comment and tarnished hello out of Thomas's rep
Bird caused a stir by saying it's black man's game and will always be a black man's game and that all the best athletes in the game were black, then joked that he'd get mad when they had a white guy cover him because "he had no chance"
@SlickSputta Bird had a decent vertical before he had a back injury in '86 and he averaged 2 dunks a game. He wasn't unathletic. He averaged 10 rebounds career and was one of the first guys on the fast break . When comparing him to other SUPERSTARS he couldn't jump, but he had a 28'' vertical post '86 which is the average vert in the nba TODAY.
@usnate1 you don't need good athleticism to be a good rebounder. You don't need to be superfast to be good in the fast break either. Bird wasn't super slow, he was medium athlete at best. Speed is like 7.5 on a scale from 0-10. Most fast shooting guards have a speed of 8.5 to 8.8. PGs around 9.0 to 10 speed. Nate Archibald 9.7 speed. Iverson 9.9 speed.
@SamuelMoralesJr If you've read my posts...You'd be agreeing with me. I was conveying that bird was still the all around best(yes even more than Magic) in the 80's....yet he didn't have the natural gifts of speed and jumping...he was INCREDIBLY agile, balance, strength, timing, I.Q....and what separated him from everyone...even above MJ in his first 7 years...was his Tenacity and heart.
Bird is the best Nba shooter but they're givin him No.1 based off his Nba career, in college tho there were better pure shooters, and that line by the suck face dude at the end "He was probably the most domiant player in the last 35yrs" Bull$hit! He was far from the most dominant college player,$hit the dude that dominated Bird in the Title game (Magic) wasnt even the most dominant player.
@TR3YBUCK Who was a better shooter than Bird in college? He shot better than 53% and averaged 30 pts/game for 3 years! Every opponent knew he was the guy to stop and S. Illinois put 2 guys on him for one entire game. He had no 3 point line yet shot from that area consistently. Magic didn't dominate Bird, he had help from Kelser, Jay Vincent and Ron Charles --all 4 saw time in the NBA. Lew Alcindor (Jabbar) should be most dominant. FYI for all, JJ Reddick only shot 43.2% from field, 91.1% on FT.
Bird's legacy is that he went to a team of nobodies in college and took them to the final game before losing a game. Then went to the NBA and orchestrated the biggest single season turnaround (at that time). "Franchise" should be his middle name. If basketball IQ could be measured on a measuring stick....Larry would be the stick. #1 is exactly where he needs to be ranked and it wasn't just shooting. Pete and Chris could at the lights out at LSU, but they didn't win like Bird.
Isaiah Thomas once said that if Larry Bird was black, he'd just be considered another really good NBA player. Like Scotty Pippin or something...not the god that everyone makes him out to be.
@guitarcapo yeah he's just saying that because he doesn't want to admit that Bird was better than him and won more championships. Remember how he got served by Bird in the 1987 Eastern Conference Finals when Bird stole the ball from his inbounds pass to win the game and series?=SERVED by a better player.
@guitarcapo He said right after another celtics victory at the buzzer by none other than a the legend himself. If anybody's overrated it thomas. I'd rather have magic or stockton at the PG.
pistol pete was awesome too...i am a celtic fan and the 1986 celtics w/ walton were best passing team i ever saw...bird broke his right finger playing softball in 1979 so he was a better shooter in college....bird and magic were artists on court, it was really fun to watch the way they whipped the ball around...great passing seems to be a lost art now
WHERE'S LSU'S CHRIS JACKSON? THE BEST SHOOTER IN BASKETBALL EVER! WHY DO THEY HATE SO MUCH ON HIM?
As a freshman at LSU Jackson avg 30pts per game! In his second season avg 28 then went to NBA.
Look at free throw pct: Bird=82%; Pete=77%; Jackson=87% including 91% in his 2nd year!
In his 3rd game at LSU he dropped 48pts! In his 5th game at LSU he torched Univ of Florida for 53pts! He had numerous 50pts 40pts+ outings. Where is CHRIS JACKSON on this list?
ROFL compare Birds NBA stats to Chris Jackson's(Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf).
Bird has better stats in everything but free throws. Bird could have averaged 40 a game WITH NO PROBLEM he didn't because he was the ultimate TEAM PLAYER. Go watch the YouTube video Larrry Bird scores 60 points and watch THE ATLANTA BENCH!!
Bird only won the 3 Pt shooting contest 3 YEARS STRAIGHT(86,87,88)!!!
Finally , a commentator with some credence. Austin Carr , who holds the NCAA tourney points per game record to this day. He averaged 34.6 points per game while at Notre Dame. He shot 52.9 % from the field -81% from the line. Many of his shots would have been long NBA threes but there wasn't a 3 point shot at that time.
Before UCLA began their 88 game win streak - their last loss was to Notre Dame in January of 1971 courtesy of Notre Dame and 46 points by Carr.
Larry Bird could tell you flat out...I'm goin to take the game winning shot and hit it....and he would. Lebron throws up the shot with hopes that its goin to go in! Bird, Jordan, Miller...best trash talkers in NBA history cuz they backed themselves up everytime!
lmao @ lebron being better than bird. Lebron will never EVER be on the same level as Larry Bird. Lebron is a heartless coward even the Cavs owner pointed that out. Disgusting to even think of Lebron in the same thought as Larry Bird.
lmao @ lebron being better than bird. lebron is a coward even the cavs owner pointed that out. He has no heart at all and will never ever be on the same level as Larry Bird.
Rick Barry no doubt was a great shooter , or you could say more of a scorer than Bird. Earl the pearl Monroe couldn't jump 12" but he had hang time that was amazing. Chris Mullins another dead eye shooter scorer Ray Allen Reggie Miller. Come on people the one and only deadliest shooter was Kareem. The Sky Hook dropped from 15' out from 12' in the air was on average the most accurate of all. He is the best shooter
Bird admits he was inspired by "Pistol Pete," who averaged 44 ppg during his college career... before the 3-point line! But, Pete was never thought of as a "pure" shooter for some reason, so maybe Bird is considered the best by default?
@jlcon99 - Pete's shooting % was never that high. He had 43.8 FG % at LSU. He was a great ball handler and overall magician (before his time) that he made opportunities to shoot on his own. He wasn't allowed to carry and palm the ball as players of today are allowed to do.
Larry Bird scored a lot but shot well over 50 % from the field (53.3) , a la Austin Carr who shot 52.9 from the field. I loved to watch Carr and Bird in college but I must admit that Pistol Pete was more exciting !
I love it no false modesty. Lets YT Austin Carr now because he filled it up in college too

Campbelldabeast3 6 months ago
@Campbelldabeast3:

18% of the players in the MLB are black and 60% are white, not a black sport.
Sorry but you don't rule, not even close. It justs seems that way if you live in America.
Reaktionar 11 months ago
@u2cruiser7230 Does your white best friend know that you think blacks are physically superior? If he knows that and is cool with it than he is a sucker. Believe me man, their is absolutely no difference physically between whites and blacks. That is a scientific fact. A lot of blacks don't have the opportunities whites have as far as education in America so they figure sports is the only way out. Try a little harder to think of yourself as a human being rather than a part of the best race.
Flipper79able 11 months ago
@Flipper79able That's not necessarily true. It's debatable what physical "superiority" actually means, but it's very possible that blacks on average are healthier physically. It just has to do with natural selection. For the better part of the last few centuries, b/c of living standards, only the most physically fit of blacks survived to adulthood and beyond. This is less true among whites, where medicine and other factors kept even the weak alive.
PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD 10 months ago
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD The average height for blacks in America is five foot ten inches the same as the average height of a white man. These are polls taken by the government and are very accurate. This crackpot theory about whites getting more medicine is bullshit......we live in the same country and anyone can go to the hospital if they are sick. I have so many doctors bills that I haven't paid off it's ridiculous. Anyway blacks and whites in this country are the same size on average.
Flipper79able 10 months ago
@Flipper79able I'm talking about blacks that only a few centuries ago survived in the jungles of Africa and later died by the boatloads as slaves throughout the Americans. Their CHILDREN were more physically fit b/c of the natural selection I was talking about.
Blacks having access to equal medicine within the last century or so really won't reverse these natural adaptations yet. It takes generations.
PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD 10 months ago
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD Look man. I know you think your on to something but talk to any doctor who studies humans in this country and they will tell you there is no difference between humans in this country. Nice try.
Flipper79able 10 months ago
@Flipper79able Uh, I'm not trying to get "on to something." I'm just telling you how science works. Lol feel free to argue with facts.
What does "there is no difference between humans in this country" even mean? If you have no reasonable knowledge to bank on except sweeping generalizations, then don't even try. If I just point out that humans don't all have the same skin pigmentation your statement is already shot down.
PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD 10 months ago
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD Oh, give me a break. Why do I have to explain what I mean?Did you forget what we were talking about? When I said there is no difference between humans in this country, I was talking about things that pertain to size and athleticism. Let's try to focus here. I also don't think you know what your talking about when you say "I'm just telling you how science works". You don't know that, it's a theory you have. There is no difference between blacks and whites athletically. I'm done
Flipper79able 10 months ago
@Flipper79able Really? Why are nearly all of the fastest up and coming sprinters in the wold today all from Jamaica? There are very real and tangible genetic differences accounting for what makes the best pure athletes on this planet. To say otherwise is pure stupidity.
ferrarif40 9 months ago
@ferrarif40 I agree. I take my statement back. By the way........do you know the exact reason why some of the fastest sprinters are from Jamaica.......Mr. Unbelievably wise and almighty person?
Flipper79able 9 months ago
@Flipper79able No I haven't cracked the genetic code so I'm not privy to that information, I can however look at the information before me. Jamaica has far less than 1% of the world's population yet they are the most competitive sprinters the world has ever seen. What else can you deduce from that? Clearly there is something going on, either they have access to a new super grade of undetectable drugs (unlikely, this is Jamaica we're talking about) or they've evolved to run... fast.
ferrarif40 9 months ago
@ferrarif40 Well think about this. Take boxing. In the early 1900's a lot of boxers were not only black but Irish and Italian. Have blacks evolved genetically sense the early 1900's? No,many white Irish and Italians no longer live in ghettoes and fight for scraps like they used to. They have moved up the scale economically in this country and grow up in privileged areas where they have more options with education and money. People generally box when they have few options. Same with other sports.
Flipper79able 9 months ago
@Flipper79able What does boxing have to do with running? Boxers are sorted out socioeconomically because you must sacrifice your body to achieve greatness (literally being beaten down). This stigma doesn't exist with running. If wealthy white adolescents had the genetic makeup to be the best runners in the world, they undoubtedly would be. Do you know how much money preppy white parents spend on training for their cross country athletes? A lot. Yet the best long distance runners are Kenyan.
ferrarif40 8 months ago
@ferrarif40 I knew you would say what does boxing have to with running. It's the same fucking thing. It's the same with all Athletes from an early age black kids get it in their minds that athletics is the only way out of the economic situation due to poor schooling, no job opportunities, discrimination, ect. White kids are taught to like sports but buckle down at school and if they play sports in college get a degree and concentrate on a real job because if they get hurt, no more money.
Flipper79able 8 months ago
@Flipper79able No it's not at all. Boxing is far less based on genetic talent than running is and there are socioeconomic stigmas surrounding it. Why do you have such a problem admitting that biological differences exist on Earth? You a white supremacist or the kid that didn't make the team because of "reverse racism?" I honestly don't get it, you're trying to deny things that are so obviously happening. Do you even believe in evolution?
ferrarif40 8 months ago
@ferrarif40 How can you ask if I'm a white supremacist, I am the one saying all races are the same and there is no difference but I guess that makes me racist? You are the one saying black people are genetically superior, if anyone is a racist it's you, I am also not the kid who didn't make the team because of reverse racism. Show me scientific evidence that one race is faster or stronger and I will agree. Some races are taller than others on average..but that's it. Show me a link for evidence.

@ferrarif40... You obviously know nothing about genetics...
Bonesy4444 8 months ago
@ferrarif40 By the way I do believe in evolution. 30 or 40 years ago white people were just as prominent in sports as blacks. Why not so much anymore? If you know anything about evolution than you would know it is impossible for a race to evolve over a 40 year span. So why are there so many blacks in sports and so few whites? There has to be other factors involved..... like the ones I was talking about.
Flipper79able 8 months ago

When comparing him to other SUPERSTARS he couldn't jump, but he had a 28'' vertical post '86 which is the average vert in the nba TODAY.
usnate1 1 year ago
@usnate1 you don't need good athleticism to be a good rebounder. You don't need to be superfast to be good in the fast break either. Bird wasn't super slow, he was medium athlete at best. Speed is like 7.5 on a scale from 0-10. Most fast shooting guards have a speed of 8.5 to 8.8. PGs around 9.0 to 10 speed. Nate Archibald 9.7 speed. Iverson 9.9 speed.

He was far from the most dominant college player,$hit the dude that dominated Bird in the Title game (Magic) wasnt even the most dominant player.
TR3YBUCK 1 year ago
@TR3YBUCK Who was a better shooter than Bird in college? He shot better than 53% and averaged 30 pts/game for 3 years! Every opponent knew he was the guy to stop and S. Illinois put 2 guys on him for one entire game. He had no 3 point line yet shot from that area consistently. Magic didn't dominate Bird, he had help from Kelser, Jay Vincent and Ron Charles --all 4 saw time in the NBA. Lew Alcindor (Jabbar) should be most dominant. FYI for all, JJ Reddick only shot 43.2% from field, 91.1% on FT.
mrho4speed 1 year ago
Bird's legacy is that he went to a team of nobodies in college and took them to the final game before losing a game. Then went to the NBA and orchestrated the biggest single season turnaround (at that time). "Franchise" should be his middle name. If basketball IQ could be measured on a measuring stick....Larry would be the stick. #1 is exactly where he needs to be ranked and it wasn't just shooting. Pete and Chris could at the lights out at LSU, but they didn't win like Bird.

#1 BEST SHOOTER EVER= CHRIS JACKSON!
2891ml 1 year ago
ROFL compare Birds NBA stats to Chris Jackson's(Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf).
Bird has better stats in everything but free throws. Bird could have averaged 40 a game WITH NO PROBLEM he didn't because he was the ultimate TEAM PLAYER. Go watch the YouTube video Larrry Bird scores 60 points and watch THE ATLANTA BENCH!!
Bird only won the 3 Pt shooting contest 3 YEARS STRAIGHT(86,87,88)!!!
geocgeo 1 year ago
Finally , a commentator with some credence. Austin Carr , who holds the NCAA tourney points per game record to this day. He averaged 34.6 points per game while at Notre Dame. He shot 52.9 % from the field -81% from the line. Many of his shots would have been long NBA threes but there wasn't a 3 point shot at that time.
Before UCLA began their 88 game win streak - their last loss was to Notre Dame in January of 1971 courtesy of Notre Dame and 46 points by Carr.

Bird admits he was inspired by "Pistol Pete," who averaged 44 ppg during his college career... before the 3-point line! But, Pete was never thought of as a "pure" shooter for some reason, so maybe Bird is considered the best by default?
jlcon99 1 year ago
@jlcon99 - Pete's shooting % was never that high. He had 43.8 FG % at LSU. He was a great ball handler and overall magician (before his time) that he made opportunities to shoot on his own. He wasn't allowed to carry and palm the ball as players of today are allowed to do.
Larry Bird scored a lot but shot well over 50 % from the field (53.3) , a la Austin Carr who shot 52.9 from the field. I loved to watch Carr and Bird in college but I must admit that Pistol Pete was more exciting !
