You have to be tough at a sport to succede. I find this sport amazing to watch, I'm a Wrestler and I know abuse and its what I go through in a light training practice therefore people who don't know the sport need to STFU.
I dont like this sport, because when I'm watching polo matchs I always see how they tug at those horses, and not once I saw the blood in their mouths...
The horses enjoy the exercise, just because we're lazy creatures doesn't mean they are. If you knew anything at all about the sport you would know the horses are changed every 7 and a half minutes so they don't get too tired, infact nearly every rule in polo is for the pony's well being not ours. I'm 14 and learning to play the sport and it is the most satisfying and thrilling game I've ever been lucky enough to play, no other sport can compare.
i just said what i've seen and sorry, but what happens in their yaps, with their backs and legs because of this maneuvers doesn't make a horse happy, be sure! But don't worry, it's not the only sport without regard for horses.
@Rabenkakaduuuuu You have no fucking clue about what you are talking about go fuck yourself you **** you just ruin a great sport , have you got any idea about horses

in america...,this game is only for aristocrats....!!! THATS BULLSHITTTT.... Those who are not very rich but have talent and passion for this...,don't get a chance.......
@botomofmyheart32PR I play polo and I'm a college student...a very poor, living off of rice and beans and food banks college student. I'm in student loan debt up to my eyeballs, but the polo community welcomes the upcoming generation. And the club where I play gives polo lessons for adults for as much as I've ever seen someone charge for regular equestrian lessons. Just sayin'.
@mr3rillionaire I think it is expensive because after a while everything adds up. You figure 2 horses minimum, here in Phoenix I think that it would be $300-$600 a month to board them. The horses seem to run from $2,000 up to I think $10 to $15 thousand. If you want to play a lot you probably have to have 4 to 6 horses. Then you have to get a truck and a trailer. And you may want to bring somebody with you to help you tack the horses. Renting the field will probably cost you $1,200 a day.
I think all those who are against the sport are ignorant and prolly havn't even sat on a horse in thier life. Yes sum horses are abused but thats thier masters fault, not the fault of the game or anything else. Polo horses are athletic and love a good run.
@mojojopopeye There polo ponies they were born to do this. And thats why they are smaller so that they are good at it. They would not do it if they did not want to.
@mojojopopeye I've been riding for 8 years. I don't do polo, or know anyone who does. I'm sure they love to run. But sometimes, they mistreat their horse. Now, don't get all mad and start being like ' oh what do you know?!". SOMETIMES they are mistreated. Kbye.
Haha people who think they're abused. Instead of criticizing the sport, which is totally humane, how about going after the abusive owners of horses in all areas? That would seem more logical to me. Polo horses are treated like gold and for good reason; most chill horses ever.
Kenidoo - its not particularly hard to train a horse for polo...they are first of all bred from a line of horses that are really chill, kinda like how most QHs are pretty calm, Argentine thoroughbreds are super laid back secondly, they work with them from the day theyre born,,,handling i mean not running or training, and they learn from Mom too, they are trained alongside their mothers so they are comfortable - Polo players are some of the most devote horsemen in the world
polo ponies are some of the best taken care of horse in the world, i switched to polo from stupid jumping and eventing..polo ponies are also well bred with clean genes...unlike the american thoroughbred which has shitty genes
Yes - the horses come off blowing heavy and very sweaty but its like a human after exercise - you soon recover! When we take them off the lines before the chukka they get very excited and its hard for me as a new player to stop them from running too fast! Every club has a pony welfare officer and players/grooms who abuse their ponies are reported to the HPA - there are very strict rules about pony welfare!
i actually saw a polo game yesterday and its truly amazing to see how much the horses get into the game i am a horse lover totally horse crazy and i know some times u see people with polo horses that dont look well looked after and it breaks my heart but the horses i see love playing polo ang love getting competitve its great they look so happy its like a bunch of ppl kicking around a rugby ball u get abit rough but u love to win and have a great time
Like with everything In the animal industry you get your good people and you get your lousy people. It's nice to see that a lot of comments say that the ponies are treated fairly but I have seen a lot of people mistreat the ponies and still play with them In such poor body conditions. So like I said, In everything you get your good and bad.
Double bridles are traditional tack in England. They are actually a great sporting bridle since the rider usually uses just a snaffle but has the choice of a heavier bit if needed. These horses are enjoying themselves. The riders are competent and relaxed. Polo is a fast sport and most players have a string of four horses so each gets a rest during the game. It is an awesome game with a ancient tradition.
Obviously it people who don't want to put in the time and effort to figure out what bit works with each specific horse each piece of tack has its specific purpose for both horse and rider. Polo ponies are amazing athletes that work best when there rider is in the right mind set.
I still say we could use less tack. What about people who rein and use a bosal or that lovely neck rope? The bits are severe I will say that. One has to take care to not rip the horse's mouth apart, I've seen riders play and come back with major bloody mouths on their mounts. I can play polo and still consider my horse's well-being. The parelli thing...? Sure, like I have said to many people, the more training the less tack people have to use or reinforcement.
The equipement might look severe, but when your galloping full speed you need to be able to stop. Some the equipment is pretty simple, breastplates (keep the saddle in place), martingales (keeps the horse from whipping his head up look at 00:25), it might look a bit complex because the riders use 2 reins. And I've used Parelli, and it didn't make a difference in Polo.
the equiptment on the polo horses looks pretty severe..i dont know that much about polo AT ALL but i still know that it LOOKS kinda harsh but idk. but i do know that parelli natural horsemanship might help. its really awsome and better for the horses. maybe it would be easier on the horses if all you polo ppl tryed it. i mean every horse can do it..i jump and it has made me improve my bond with my horse by far.
The one thing I don't like that most of everyone Is saying Is that polo ponies are expensive. If they weren't does that mean It would be all right to abuse them then? People should WANT to take care of them because It Is the right thing to do, not because a dollar sign hangs over the horse's head.
I agree with some comments on here and others I don't. I play polo and I wouldn't say that the animals love It, they probably get a rush from running so far and fast but If you watch horses they won't go running back and forth that hard chasing a ball In their field or out on the range. We have trained them to do this. It Isn't a terrible thing... If you treat your animal right. I'm In the polo/horse industry and no matter what you do or where you go there are jerks who are abusive or non-caring
@PolloPonies Why do you play a sport you don't think your horses like? You don't see horses jumping fences, running barrels or practicing piafs in the pasture either. Sports requires training.
Just because a horse is worth a lot of money doesn't mean people don't still want to care for it "because it's the right thing." The value is an added incentive for top notch care.
Finally, I'd like to se anyone stop any horse immediately that is running at a full gallop with a parelli hack.
If you don't know anything about Polo I'd suggest you think befor making silly comments. Polo ponies are treated amazingly, I've worked as a Polo groom, they're expensive animals, at the end of the day they earn their keep because the player who owns them earns money when he/she is playing them. If a pony is badly treated it wont be able to play resulting in the player loosing money.
yes it's tough work, but no different to other equestrian sports.
i dont know much about polo, but i'm all about animal rights HOWEVER some of yu animal rights ppl are just being crazy!! i dont believe polo harms the ponies, nd i believe they really do love the game becuz it gives them plenty of healthy exercise which is very good for them. And they probably(again i dont konw) can associate with the other horses, which by the way the horse do actually like .. i know at the ranch i go to, they are selling two horse sisters and they cant be seperated
hmm. (this is horsewhisperer8) aka: Gallopbarbaro.
I agree with hersheyluva. People are agressive in every sport. polo isnt the only one. sure the horses are tired but if they werent treated rught; they couldnt even finish the game now could they? there are alot of polo ponies the really enjoy the sport. :D
Hey y'all I am @ a polo barn. If the horses didn't like they game, there is NO way you could get them to do stuff like that. They are ALOT smarter than you think.
There are yahoos in every horse sport. The majority of polo ponies are really well-cared for and love the game. Those that don't are weeded out very early in their career, and since they get really good early training and are bred to be well-mannered and handy, can go on to just about anything.
I play polo and trust me if the horses didnt love the game theres absolutly no way I would b able 2 do things that i do on them. On the way 2 a game it's difficult 2 restrain them..lol.. And trust me its not only the horses that are exhausted, I never sweat more than i do in a summer polo game.
I learned to ride on a retired polo pony. He was very good in his day and loved the game. Even as a very old horse, he got excited when he saw a horse trailer because he thought he was going to a game. He'd chase anything that moved if you gave him the cue. It is expensive and time consuming to train and maintain a polo pony. They are not abused, they are far too expensive.
think how how buggered a race horse is after theyve run a race!!they are way more likely to have a heart attack and get way more stressed out.dont judge it before you know way more about it
The fact that polo ponies are good for chukkas (albeit not at the highest level) well into their 20s is proof of how well taken care they are, *especially* compared to racehorses, like woodc4 said, and, even more so, than dressage horses. Just 'cuz the game is fast doesn't mean it's abuse, that's like saying football is abusive to humans. I know of plenty of retired polo horses that have had to be brought into arena polo or instrucitonal chukkas because they get depressed after being retired.
The world already has too many ignorant people wandering around trying to force their ignorance on others, don't join them. Also, it's not exactly easy on the players either, you have no idea what polo does to a player's thighs.
most polo players care for their horses damn well!i run a yard of 47 and they each get cared for and i know all players are cautious for their horses on the field. they are a hell of a lot meaner to eachother as a mob in the paddock than we ever are to them on the field
As a polo player, I can tell you that many polo ponies enjoy the game! Mine gets ultra-excited about playing. Most of the horses that I see at matches are treated well, and cruelty and abuse are not tolerated at the clubs where I play. Most polo ponies are Thoroughbreds, and love to run. And I think all riding disciplines could use more people who take the time to be true horsemen (or women), being kinder and more understanding of their horses. :)
Not only do the horses seem to really get into the game, the really good ones often play it better than the people riding them--by which I mean that they are more aware of what's going on and where the ball is than the player does!
oh and we have amare at my barn who was treated wonderfully as a polo horse and loved every minute of it and was then abused by the man who taught her hunters, she is now treated wonderfully at my eventing barn. Don't make idiotic comments when you know nothing of the sport
You have to be tough at a sport to succede. I find this sport amazing to watch, I'm a Wrestler and I know abuse and its what I go through in a light training practice therefore people who don't know the sport need to STFU.

Just because the horses are tired doesn't mean they were treated badly.

oh and we have amare at my barn who was treated wonderfully as a polo horse and loved every minute of it and was then abused by the man who taught her hunters, she is now treated wonderfully at my eventing barn. Don't make idiotic comments when you know nothing of the sport
