crazy how at about 1:40:40 the commentators knew that sakic would give the cup right to bourque. guess that's the kind of reputation he had. class act.
Hard to believe it's been 10 years already. I was at this game in the Pepsi Can. Ray Bourque looked like a Titan when he finally got to hoist the Cup. Truly a magical moment for fans of Ray Bouque and fans of the Colorado Avalanche. Thanks also goes out to the New Jersey Devils for putting up a battle in a hard fought seven game series.
@shadyone33fanofgsp "Too bad this isn't the CBC broadcast." REally?imho the CBC broadcast is utter rubbish. I cant begin to tell you how much better Mike Emrick is than any of the hacks on the CBC> Sure its our game but Emrick does it better.
Thank you for posting the entire game. That year turned me into a lifetime hockey fan. One of the best moments in sports to witness. Sakic with the ultimate class act in letting Ray Bourque lift it first.
@ryleeryno No matter what's your favourite team, if you didn't get emotional when he lifted it, you don't have a heart. I still get chills from watching this, and I'm a Stars fan!
great time for hockey. Looking back on this as a Wings fan I remember how much I hate the avalanch, but they are a better enemy than the soft-wit penguins sharks predators and coyotes.
I'm a Blackhawks fan and I wanted Ray Borque to win it!! At that time the hawks sucked because the old owner Wertz was cheapskate by not televising their home games.
@xAxiom720x Doubtless you've heard the story that Forsberg showed up on the day of game 7 ready to play. Hartley called Lacroix and the doctors and determined that Forsberg would be risking severe internal injury and possible death if he had played. A decade later, some still question his toughness.
If only he hadn't been speared in the LA series. If only Bourque hadn't retired, the Avs could've repeated. Doesn't really matter though. The Avs won. Can't take that away from them.
I have the CBC game in its entirety, both 1996 and 2001 Cups. I took the day off work just so I could record these. One of the best decisions ever. I'll try to post them
@Julian24151 true and another great moment was 2007 when Selanne lift the Cup up.Ray and Teemu rly deserved win this biggest price what hockey player can ever win =) Wings win Cup 2012!
Gary Thorne sells this game beautifully.

sakic was more of a force in this game than any other. to compensate for the loss of forsberg he became forsberg while continuing to be sakic.

By the way, Ray Bourque's wife Christiane now owns a successful spa and salon in the Boston area.

Normally, a U.S. President calls the winner's dressing room and talks to the head coach and the team captain of a Stanley Cup champion.
But it's my understanding that then-Persident George W. Bush in his call talked not to Avs' captain Joe Sakic, but to Ray Bourque/

imagine if the Avs had Foppa in this series, certainly wouldnt have went 7 games.
i certainly hope they put up the 96 game too, that one is much rarer.
