@mrsciencereturns Not necessarily! The most popular answer MAY NOT always b right so I believe that he was wise 2 take the money knowing he wouldn't take such a risk during that question!
I think that was the old high-tier 'final answer' sound, which was a bit longer and more musically complex than the one in the mid-tier questions. In later episodes, the mid-tier and high-tier 'final answer' sounds are the same.
Also, notice that the question and answer bars are in dark blue/white border in color instead of the black/light blue border in later episodes.
WOW! I've been wanting to see the very first UK episode for years! Thanks a ton for posting.
I'm also VERY curious as to why there's NO "Final Answer" confirmation from Chris!!! When did Chris start asking that??? It had to be soon into the run I would think.
It was something they picked up on quite quickly. They noticed that people would say one of the options as if to say that's the answer but then change their mind, so to avoid any possible controversy they made Chris ask people in his now inimitable way "is that you're final answer?"
Oh wow I just noticed that sound when he goes orange on the 64k question, I don't remember that at all, they obviously scrapped it after not long.

Were the questions a little easier then? At least compared to the 2007+ series

The bars are like that possibly because of the low-quality
