SHE didn't pull the top. I stood there and watched this. She overreacted to a passenger falling out and vented, without realizing that once it equalized it would drop.

Stupid move? Yes. A decision made in a split second that, to her, could mean the difference between life and death? Also yes.

Also, the tent is what it hits first when the basket tips to the side.

The pilot didn't mess up. She did the best she could. The winds were insane that day.

@tinman3804 He didn't pull the top out of the balloon. A person fell out of the balloon giving the balloon a lot more lift that is necessary for one person instead of two. He pulled the red line to cool it down but the balloon temperature was still to hot and all of the air inside the balloon rushed out once he opened the vented some of the air which creates this "streamer" balloon. He should have waited it out and let the balloon climb before he did that.

@Sessioner11 the reason for that usually is that you want weight on the basket when it lands. Sometimes in a heavy wind you'll have rougher landings where the basket tips and you need the chase crew there to weight it down even thought the envelope is deflated. Obviously this balloon wasn't going back up in the air anymore, but it's possible it could've dragged and if anyone was injured in there it could've been worse. I imagine though he wanted to weight it down and to check the passengers.

When you're piloting a balloon, you always cool little at a time. That's the mistake she made. If she didn't pull the red line so much, this wouldn't have happened. Mistakes happen but there are other ways to get around a situation like this one.

bonanzaandhorsegirl needs to stop playing FAA. Landings are just that, LANDINGS, not controlled crashes. The pilot of this balloon did everything right. There was a competition underway and balloons were everywhere. After the ejection the rate of ascent was such that it endangered other balloons in the area. She did the right thing. Let's let the real FAA investigate instead of the horse and pony show.

I agree that horsegirl is wrong, but I do not agree that the pilot did the right thing. Watching the video you can see that she added heat after hitting the tent and losing a passenger. She was already going to get a rebound from hitting the object and should have started venting or pulled out the top immediatley. By adding heat and increasing lift, she made the recoil worse.

I was told the balloon has an Aerostar springtop, it should not have been pulled out at 300 feet, they are not great vents, but venting until leveling off and contoling the descent is what I would have done. I was not there and I may be wrong but after watching seveal videos and talking to other pilots that where there, this is my assessment.

Watching a different video, with a different perspective, I was able to see that she did add heat after the ejection. Not what I would have done either. I agree, venting into a controlled descent would have been the proper course of action. We'll probably never know the thought process that lead to the decisions the pilot made that morning.

Yeah, it was good that she pulled the red line, but if you haven't noticed, it was a little too much. The same rule applies when she goes up and when she comes down. It was too fast both way. And I know it's tight to land, but there's a freaking building in the way. Duh! How stupid can you be? (not retaining to you, but the pilot)

i really didnt think the weight of one passenger could cause a balloon to rise that much. I understand the pilot wanting to land after that but the balloon deflating couldve been avoided if the pilot just tried to keep flying it but because the pilot pulled the top so quickly that happened. Just pointing out how the deflation couldve been avoided

in reality . . . the loss of one person CAN cause the balloon to climb. the balloon was meant to deflate. if your passneger falls out are you gunna keep on flying? no. she did everything right.

The loss of a passenger from a basket can DEFINITELY make a big difference. When you land, you have to wait until the envelope has cooled down enough so that when a person exits, it doesn't make the balloon go up. I've gotten out of a balloon too fast and the balloon has risen again. The pilot in this case pulled her parachute after her passenger fell. Balloonists will tell you she did everything correctly. (This from a crew person who flies periodially.)

1 every time a balloon lands its considered a crash, but more like a controled crash.

2 this is not a little hit. balloons arent meant to be comin out of the sky like steamers. after the passenger fell out the pilot panaked because the loss of weight causes the balloon to rise back up. when this happened, the pilot pulled the top cap out and at this point there was no way she could hav revived so yes she would hit hard. lucky she walked away right after this video was taken

i think because the 1 guy fell out the balloon rose very fast.. then somehow the balloon is out of balance and air is escaping. then falls quickly again.... its my best guess.
