This piece is rocking. I could make myself cry with it because it’s just that awesome, I can barely play it. It has massive chords that are placed just so that it is okay to include some accidental thumbings. The left hand is insanely hard to grasp in the middle, I wouldn’t dare say I could play it, only show you what notes there are. All in all, this piece is fun to play, hardcore, and tear bringing to listen to.
This performance is actually the only one that comes anywhere near to Sviatoslav Richter's godlike interpretation. The ending varies somewhat though, but to my surprise I rather liked Philippov's style.
This is a great song, but I personally like the Gilel's interpretation better. The louder part (starting around 0:37) should have more contrasting dynamics and tempo...but that's just my opinion.
I love this piece to... pieces. *laughs* I love it so much though!! I would put it on eternal repeat if I could! If I ever tried to play this my hands would probably fall right off...
I've always liked Maxim's playing every since I was 13 and seen him performing in the Leeds competition, and I recently bought the Cliburn DVD 2001, and ever since that I have been a fan!
@theheadshotboss95 It's more likely that the person who disliked this video didn't care for this particular interpretation. This song is very deep and seems to have very many interpretations (I happen to prefer this one to the others I've seen on YouTube).
@theheadshotboss95 And it is both shallow and ignorant of you to assume that someone who hates classical music likes death metal, especially considering there are plenty of metal performers who are downright prodigious and write brilliant, often classical-inspired music. You are the one who needs to learn more about music before you go blindly bashing people.
@theheadshotboss95 agree but i listen to death metal but i LOOOOOOOOVVVVVVEEEEEE rachmaninoff i could die hearing him does that count as good? lol but no i really love this and all kinds of metal (metallica YEAH!)
hey guys! I would appreciate if someone could listen and give some comments on my version of this.... just hope i can play this well one day! I am confused to the speed as some people like it fast but it should be alla marcia?? So any comments would be appreciated! Please subscribe if you like my playing
Thank you for putting this up! I learned this prelude years ago, and it gave me tendonitis....ouch! That's what I get for having smaller hands. Anyway, the thing I most love about Rachmaninoff's preludes (this one in particular) is that I really feel like I am listening to a full orchestra, not just a piano.
In regards to Rachmaninoff's compositions, he was 6'6" with hands in proportion; he was a performer (one of the best-loved) and so his works were difficult for anyone with average-sized hads.
i didnt like the pp section with the bass scales when i first heard it. but now that i actually listen to the music instead of just skimming through it i can appreciate the melodies and the poetry of Rachmaninov. it feels like im in a dream world when i close my eyes and listen
well its not something ur ""supposed"" to be playing at 3 years...and its not something thats encouraged to be played after only 3 years, because while its not too hard, it does require a strong technique.

I don't mean to sound arrogant, but I've been playing for about 2 years, and I've learned the infamous 3rd movement of the moonlight, which is to say a lot harder than this piece. I have a video of the presto agitato if you don't believe.
why is it infamous? the third movement of the moonlight sonata is the most beautiful piece Beethoven ever wrote. and i believe flippingfo0l is referring to the first movement, which is easier than the third movement and some of other Beethoven works.
@cynderfella no they wouldn't... give it a try! I thought the same, but it is well within the reach of the intermediate advanced pianist... a REALLY good performance requires virtuosic skill nonetheless, but it's worthy to try it out... btw THIS IS NOT A SONG!
If you can play ragtime, the beginning and end is not that hard. You hit so many notes at once, but once your used to that, the rythmn itself is easy enough. Now the middle part is the hardest part of the song, but I've been playing the piano for 3 years now, to me it's not the most complex arrangement of arpeggios and scales. I've seen a lot worse. This song is no harder than fantasie impromptu if your already used to hitting lots of notes at once.
Very odd how you say it's no harder than Fantasie Impromptu. I would say this song is easier than Fantasie, but this is a more forceful song which makes it funner to play. Though not difficult, lots of moving up and down the piano.
As long as you have huge hands and you're good at remembering confusing chords you should be alright. I can barely play the whole song though without going wrong somewhere.
some problems you might get from playing that passage may be that you tend to tense up when playing so many octaves.
I'd do what spikeusa21 said and start slowly and GRADUALLY get faster and make sure you have the fingering down. The idea in that passage is to also bring out the top notes so generally you'll be using your fourth and fifth fingers.
I can play this thanks to this video. I couldn't locate it anywhere online and so I printed it from your video. I don't sound anything like this, however. ;)
