I think i commented on your Billie Jean video, but now it's not available in my country. Just wanted to say, this is great, you know how to handle the guitar!!
Even w/ LP pickups installed Santana's Buddha still sounded different than an LP. The difference may have been in the types of woods it used, but I'm not sure that the woods used in the Yamaha were much different than an LP. If not then maybe it was the wiring that accounted for most of the difference. Different tone caps, maybe a treble bleed schematic and coil tapping and such.
Hey shinkongo! What up with the yamaha man? I know yours is probably not the equal of the one that Carlos played! I think his was a one of a kind axe. But I always thought the yamaha was thinner in tone than the Les Pauls. Pauls had balls! The upside for the yamaha was that it really screamed! Do you think my assessment is accurate since you play one? Unfortunately I don't like the inlays! :(
Hmmm well, I love them both, for different reasons. They have their own unique voices, but it depends on how you use them. I tend to use the les paul and sg2000s in a Mesa Boogie Mk1. If i'm going for a Santana (or Neal in fact) tone from the time Neal was in the band or a Lotus era Santana tone i'll use the Les Paul.
If i'm going for Moonflower era or later i'll use the Yamaha SG2000s. Nah it doesn't compare to Carlos' Budda but I can get that kind of tone since I guess you could think of it as a no frills version of the one Carlos had. Then again any Yamaha SG is a no frills version compared to the Budda. It still does the job though. it's still nice and it stands up against the Les Paul in it's own way. But it depends how you use them and what the rest of your gear is.
Maybe you'd need to try one side by side with a Les Paul and see what you think. The other Yamaha SG that I have is an sg1300ts the one I used on Yuutsu. It has a different timbre and I tend to use it with a Marshall JCM800. That's the one with a trem bar. It's not as sweet as the 2000s but again it's different and is used for different applications. About the sg2000s, if you check my latest video Morning Light you can see what it can do. Also, the other nice thing is, it has coil-tap!
Speaking of coil tap, I sent you a clip of Carlos playing Samba Pa Ti in 1974 on his L6S! Did you get it? It was during his Borboletta tour! It will take some time before I can try a Yamaha. Guitar stores are full of crap these days and Yamahas are tough to come by. But I like some of the stuff Carlos did on his Yamaha like Europa and the tune Gardenia on Swing of Delight. But his classic tunes lacked balls w/ the Yamaha. It's tone was too thin at times.
Oh no! Because I get like a million videos sent to me, most of which are junk spams, I don't look in that section. Sounds exceptional! I will check it out!
Originally, I thought that Carlos got away from the Les Paul because of weight and tuning problems! If you look at some of the old Lotus era videos, you'll notice that he used to sit on a stool from time to time. He really isn't a big fellow you know! But I hear that the Yamaha is heavy as well. Yet he never used a stool when he played the Yamaha! So I don't know about the weight thing?
Yes I believe it to be true. However, the stock pickups seem fine to me. And have their own unique tone. Anyway it's nice to me in it's own way and hey if it was the same as the Les Paul there would be no point having it for me, since I already have the Les Paul Custom too.
Wow I love this its my favourite style to play myself and I love this song too! I was wondering how you removed the vocals? Also do you know how to play the part at like 3:49 to about 4:03 (when michael would be dancing)
Thanks. Well..... I got the track without vocal already. Do you want it?
Well.. What do you mean? Want me to tell you how to play that part? That's just a simple riff, it's already on the recording actually, so I just played a different part too.
It would be great if you could send it to me, I'll give you my email through a private message,
And yeah, I wanna know how to play it, I know its a simple riff and all and usually I can figure out really complex stuff by ear but for some reason I just cant get this!
Sure go ahead. Never actually thought about playing that riff, since it was already on there I didn't need to, but yeah it's not too tough. Well.. Wouldn't know how to explain to you though, because I only hear something or think something and play, don't understand reading music or tab.
Actually, I got the original real track but without the vocals, so I can play instead of the vocal part. Also decided to speed up the track. And I added the organ and the synth thing that appears in the background. Do you want the track? If so I can give it to you no problem.

That little detail keeps me from wanting one.

On a side note, I heard a rumor that Carlos had his Les Paul pickups installed on his Yamaha because he didn't like the Yamaha's pickups.
