Fruit may be inversely associated w/diabetes-Prev Med Jan 2001
So, why push a diet of low carb when carbs are only 60% of the problem?
In the meantime, what about the heme iron and fat and excess protein and uric acid in meat that causes diabetes too?
I'm not pushing any diet on anyone. Anyone who follows me online knows I am all about individuals making the best choice for the sake of their weight and health. However, that means while a vegan diet like you seem to favor may work for you, maybe a high-fat, animal-based low-carb diet will work for me. Diabetes is a condition that is only exacerbated by the excessive consumption of carbohydrate. Sure, there are other factors, but that's the primary one which is why I focus on it so strongly.
I didn't say u were pushing it on any[one] in particular but you were pushing it despite disease risks associated.
'while a vegan diet like you seem to favor may work for you, maybe a high-fat, animal-based low-carb diet will work for me'
That assumption (you haven't tried both), takes for granted that humans are scavengers without dietary specialization, yet have vast differences in dietary needs that no species demonstrate within their own species.
There are no proven "disease risks" associated with high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb diets containing real whole foods. I'm not at all interested in doing a plan (low-fat, which I did in 1999 with great weight loss success, but felt horrible) that I cannot sustain. Low-carb living saved my life and my health is immaculate today because of it. Find the plan for you and do it is my bottom line philosophy.
'There are no proven "disease risks" Science looks for causal agents and evidence, not 100% cause/effect proof of 1 factor.
'associated with high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb'
Do u have operationalizing #s? For instance, it's well-known humans naturally produce watered down breast milk of 1% protein and wild hominoidea consume less than 5% fat. (Wrangham et al., 1991). humans do not need more than 3-5% fat, enough to provide the one essential fatty acid and fat soluble vitamins (RDA, 1989).
No sure what research you are examining, but there is ample evidence showing carbs are the root cause of the obesity/diabetes twin pandemics. Read GOOD CALORIES, BAD CALORIES by Gary Taubes for the historical research and THE NEW ATKINS FOR A NEW YOU for 50 of the latest studies on the healthfulness of carbohydrate restriction. It even includes vegetarian versions of low-carb living. My low-carb lifestyle has kept me from an early grave like my brother suffered at the age of 41.
You never heard of heme iron?? I referenced the study...
'there is ample evidence showing carbs are the root cause of the obesity/diabetes'
I agree processed/starchy/refined food lacking fiber is correlated with diabetes. But that's not the only causal agent. Decreased insulin response causes more free glucose in the bloodstream and more insulin to be produced to try to penetrate the cells. This happens with high fat diets too, saturated or not.
I wish I had time to continue to share why I believe what I believe based on science, but read the books I talked about, check out the medical literature, and do further research. It looks like there are indeed questions that you've brought up that are worthy of examination, but hopefully I've given you some similar food for thought to challenge what you believe as well. Be well my friend and thanks for the conversation!
Fresh, raw fruit and even juices when sipped on gradually, digested best, are far less condusive and even negatively correlated with diabetes but why do people on low carb diets lump all plant foods together?
Sure low carb is negatively correlated w/diabetes when u eliminate the complex carbs of breads and pasta and refined grains. Assume that is the worst diet, related to diabetes. But then why settle for the second worst diet of meat, which impedes insulin response?
Fruit is an interesting subject because it seems to have this "health halo" attached to it as if it is some kind of superfood. But I'd NEVER eat a banana which has a whopping 29g carbohydrate in it. Or the much-heralded orange juice which has as much sugar in it as a can of Coca-Cola. One of the things that has been most remarkable about healthy low-carb living is coming off of that sugar rollercoaster ride and I don't have to worry about spiking my blood sugar or insulin levels ever again!
'I'd NEVER eat a banana which has a whopping 29g carbohydrate'
I don't eat bananas either, they are too starchy/complex carbs and mucus forming with mucopolysacharides. Bananas are not succulent fruit, digested best by humans. Closest relatives don't normally eat bananas either.
8:56 Diabetes is a risk factor of Atkins type diets.
Positive associations were also observed between type 2 diabetes and red meat. Arch Internal Med. 2004;164:2235.
Greater dietary heme-iron intake and/or supplemental iron were associated w/ increased risk of Type 2 diabetes. Diabetologia,47,(2) Feb, 2004
Intakes of total cholesterol, animal protein, and heme iron were also significantly associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes Care. 2004 Sep;27(9):2108-15.
There is no evidence that an Atkins low-carb diet leads to diabetes--just the opposite:
Dietary carbohydrate restriction in type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome: time for a critical appraisal Nutrition & Metabolism 2008, 5:9 (8 April 2008)
The effect of a low-carbohydrate, ketogenic diet versus a low-glycemic index diet on glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus Nutrition & Metabolism 2008, 5:36doi:10.1186/1743-7075-5-36
So u just pick and choose what research u want to believe?
Meanwhile, no studies indicate that a real fruit with the fiber diet promotes diabetes...
I posted studies above providing biological plausibility for the correlation between animal fat consumption and diabetes. Do u have no respones to it?
I'm not doubting a low carb diet may be less unhealthy as a standard american diet but there are specific reasons why meat contributes to diabetes. Will u just not address the issue?
I have an open mind about the research & am willing to entertain any new ideas that run counter from what I have seen. Seems to me you're not willing to offer this same courtesy. Your thoughts on fruit are curiously interesting to me because I'd love to see a study examining the impact of fruit as nature intended (fiber and all) and the impact on blood sugar/insulin levels. On the subject of animal fat and diabetes, I don't buy into it at all. Explain to me how dietary fat leads to diabetes.
Of course if you compare diets w/complex carbs to atkins, atkins diets are not going to have as much of a risk factor for DB2 but if you take away the starchy foods AND animal fat, this decreases DB2 risk further.
Diabetic children had a high intake of energy from saturated fat and low intake of fibre, fruits and vegetables
Diabetologia. 2007 Feb;50(2):307-16.
if weight is the most valued factor, atkins doesn't compare to frugivore diets, one can eat as much fruit possible without worry.
If you fear saturated fat after all the science that has come out about it in recent years, then that's your choice. But it's totally innocuous to your health. Read FAT AND CHOLESTEROL ARE GOOD FOR YOU by Dr. Uffe Ravnskov for more information.
It's not at all a question of 'fear' as much as it is a question of what the optimal diets for humans is. I admitted atkins diets help lose weight compared to standard American diets but not compared to fruit based diets. I was contrasting a biochemically compatible/life promoting diet with the atkins, which is associated with diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's, etc.
I explained that compared to a standard American diet of starch/processed foods, atkins is not as strongly correlated with diabetes.
I wish I had time to continue to share why I believe what I believe based on science, but read the books I talked about, check out the medical literature, and do further research. It looks like there are indeed questions that you've brought up that are worthy of examination, but hopefully I've given you some similar food for thought to challenge what you believe as well. yep, DANDR wasn´t the invention of Low Carb, but certainly is a classic, Its fun to read , I think I read DADR ( borrowed from a friend ) in 3 days, I found it to be extremely interesting, Atkins did a good job on it. I think you could maybe add a good low carb recipe book. I´m on a Orkut community where recipes for Ice Creams , Breads, Cakes , and many many candies abount. they´re all great.
they look like great books to add to the library. Do you think that you could send me the names and the links to the sites in which I can purchase these little gems? Thanks
Love the videos, they are really informative and fun to watch. The website is great and I have ordered a shipment of your raspberry chocolate bars. BTW. I accidently left a negative vote on bennyenglish's comment. Sorry about that.
Hi guys! Thanks for giving a run down on excellent books to pick up. The one on Mindless Eating caught my eye. I know you have limited time, but just in case- it would be even better if you could give a bit more information. Buying books internationally is something I don't lightly so any more in depth info you could give on the actual books (rather than their topics) would be just fantastic. Thanks! Loving your vids! Erika.
THANKS Erika! You are exactly right, we don't have a lot of time to get into these books in a more in-depth way. The best thing you can do is go to my blog at LivinLaVidaLowCarb dot com where I have written book reviews of all these, including Mindless Eating. Do a Google search and you should find the past ones.
Great recommendations. I started at 478lbs and was diagnosed a diabetic back in February, since about March I have dropped 90lbs doing low carb. Keep spreading the good word :)
GREAT JOB on your weight loss, jstcrzyengh! Sounds like you're livin' la vida low-carb and loving it! WOO HOO!!! Keep it up and let me know how I can help you along in this journey. :)
OMG....You two are WONDERFUL. I have started my venture into low carbing. I have had open heart surgery, severe sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other health issues. Not to mention had started low carbing on October 1 weighing in at 300+ pounds and am currently at 290. I know this is the way to go and am looking so forward to watching more of your videos, researching your blog and obtaining other information as I change to a "healthy" way of life.
God bless you dll894204! We wish you nothing but GREAT SUCCESS on your low-carb journey and are here for you to help you be as healthy as you can possibly be--the low-carb way! :) KEEP AT IT!!!
Let me thank you for your time We appreciate you, some of us may not be as savvy Your information has really helped me I have a book & read every chance I get.I try to stay positive and try to be kind to myself and understand that I can start over right then, even if it may be 2xs in the same day. If I don't give up then I will become a winner. Good for you and your hard work. Linda
Today is day 8 and I am down 5 lbs already. My belly feels lighter and "clean" inside. Its so nice to not have that "stuffed" feeling EVER. I already downloaded your e-book but would not miss the chance to add a real book to my low carb collection I am starting. God Bless you both again. I always enjoy your videos :O) - Elaine
Hey Elaine, WOO HOO! Way to go with the weight loss and KEEP IT UP! You are such a beautiful woman and you KNOW you can do this since you've done it in the past. Good luck in the drawing for my book and THANK YOU for watching our videos. :)
Thanks for posting. I have been on the low carb ride for a few months and have lost about 50 lbs. I have about 250 more to go. I would like to write a book about my journy when I am at my goal weight any suggestoions? Thanks agian for posting and being an insperation!
Jake, way to go! Keep up the low-carb life and you'll make that weight loss goal! My advice for you? Start a blog and be honest and open about your experience. People will connect with you and cheer you on to success. Contact me anytime you need encouragement and support.
I have to say I love your new You tube series. How cool to be able to watch the two of you together. I really like the interaction between you two.
I have to thank you so much for all the motivation and inspiration. I don't think you will ever know just how much help you give all us out here trying to live a healthy low carb lifestyle. Sometimes it can be a lonely road, but you make it a joy too.
God bless you, Vikki! Christine and I are so excited to be able to share with others about the uplifting and encouraging aspects of the healthy low-carb lifestyle. Sure, there's negativity about this way of eating, but it is borne out of ignorance for what low-carb is about. We know better and will keep sharing it as long as we have breath to breathe. :)
I have a question for you. I did low carb once and lost a LOT of weight, but I gained it all back. I read somewhere that there is a "golden" time for low carbing and it only works the first time. Is that true? If I go back to low carbing will it work again?
Excellent question, iluvmy4blessings! And I have good news for you. Because you have lost weight before on low-carb, then it means your body works well with carbohydrate restriction. I've blogged about the "one golden shot" theory before stating it is bunk. E-mail me and I'll send you the link to my post. If you go back on low-carb, then STAY on it for life!
Hello Jimmy & Christine, I love watching your videos... thank you for all your help, they are great and very inspirational. Please keep them coming... I weighed 430 lbs, I need to lose 205 LBS I'm well into my 2nd week of Induction and have lost 14 lbs so far. How long did you stay on Induction before OWL? Any tips would be appreciated on losing alot of weight... thanks ... DANO :)
SlimQuest, I stayed on Induction (20g carbs) for two months and then went up to as high as 35-40g carbs for the rest of my weight loss. Today, I stick with around 50g daily to maintain my weight.
Love the videos. Keep them coming. I'm very glad to see Diabetes Solution, by Richard K Bernstein, made the list. I'm a huge fan of yours Jimmy, but I'm an even bigger fan of Dr. B's. His book changed (ie- saved, extended, greatly enhanced and improved, you name it) my life over four years ago and I will never look back. Anyone with Diabetes should read this book, imo. If you don't want to buy it, get it at the library. You will not regret it.
THANKS Mark! Like I said, this book list was NOT a comprehensive one and I very well could have included MANY more like Protein Power by Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades. The focus of this list was to include the old and new books that have made the most difference in my low-carb life so far. I LOVE the Eades and think the world of what they are doing.
There is a tidle wave of new information and also a new understanding since the low carb wave a few years ago. You are a low carb ambassader Jimmy I salute you.
God bless you, Paul! I'm only one man who's doing my part to keep that tidal wave building with the evidence and science to back me up! THANKS for your support.
Again -- what a wealth of knowledge you're sharing in these videos! Keep it up -- I always look forward to when your next YouTube video is uploaded. -Debi
We appreciate your devoted support, Debi! It would be great if we could post more often, but we do what we can. THANK YOU for helping us spread the word about the healthy low-carb life!
It's been one incredible experience with these YouTube videos so far, ghavamian. And getting to share it with my lovely and gracious wife Christine makes it worth every moment! This is the side of her most people never see, so I'm glad it shines through in every way in these videos. THANK YOU for watching!
Aw, that's so sweet Oh2BFit. We'd love to be doing more of them, but my schedule with my blog, podcast show, writing a new book, a very popular new forum, and so much more takes up a TON of time. But we think once a week is doable. And so we do it! :D THANKS for watching and spread the word!
My daughter will be jumping on my bandwagon after visiting her holistic doctor and getting the thumbs up for low carb. (I think it surprised her a little) This book list will sure come in handy. A BIG thank you! I am starting her off with Dr. Atkins book first because I already own it of course. So now off to Amazon....fwoosh.........
Well wejeepers creepers (sorry, couldn't resist!), that totally awesome! There's so much learning to do and these books I highlighted in this video will certainly help. HAVE FUN teaching your daughter about the amazingly healthy low-carb lifestyle!
Yep, it's me! I've been reading DANDR and a couple of other good books I got, but I'd really love to find Gary Taubes new book and a few of Jonny Bowden's! I've been keeping my eye out for them!
THANKS for watching djdruc! People just don't even realize how low-carb literature backs up all these claims we make about the diet. AMAZING stuff indeed! GOOD LUCK in the drawing for my book. :)
Thanks for the certificated!!!! WOOHOO So not that I want to win again, thanks for the great suggestions for books. I really do appreciate such support from you all. (It okay, I have a funny dialect too)
You are VERY welcome, Denise and I hope you enjoy your prize. You'll like these books, too, so check 'em out! As for my "roots" pronunciation, Christine just doesn't know what speaking proper is like. LOL! SEE YA!
Again....THANK YOU for sharing such valuable info on Low Carb Livin...!!! Always look forward to your video postings...Sometime it is very difficult to diet alone, but with Jimmy and Christine videos, I feel like I have a partner in this journey to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle. I pray that there will be many more people to discover the two of you so that they can start livin the "HEALTHY" lifestyle that is intended for all of us.
THANKS tiparker119! You've NAILED the reason why most people should be livin' la vida low-carb--it's all about being healthy. Weight loss is a nice side effect of eating low-carb, but controlling blood sugars and warding off disease is what makes this way of eating so worth it!
Been meaning to comment. Started Atkins 8/26, reading the book for the second time and have lost 24lbs. so far. I was off insulin in 16 days! Listened to all your past podcasts and viewed your videos. Keep 'em comin'. And don't you ever stop Christine from saying, "Yeppers!" It has become a household word around here as my wife is Livin' La Vida Low Carb w/ me. Keep it up.
LOL! That's too funny harknii about the "Yeppers" comments. Nope, wouldn't think of having Christine stop saying it--that's her trademark now. :D CONGRATULATIONS on your weight loss and blood sugar control success. TOTALLY AWESOME!!! THANKS for watching and listening to my podcast shows, too. SEE YA!
We're happy you found and enjoy our videos, too, mrniceguy28431! Especially check out LIVING THE LOW-CARB LIFE by Dr. Jonny Bowden--the BEST low-carb book I've ever read besides DANDR.

Not according to the scientific research. Heme iron is ONLY found in animal parts and causes type 2 diabetes.

Thanks for the book advice:)
I will read the Gary Taubes book next. Of those books you mentioned i have the Atkins (the new and the old revolution).
I dont have at book of Barry Groves, but i think he has a very clear way of saying and explaining things. Makes things very easy to understand.
aztube2007 4 years ago
You'll enjoy both Taubes and Groves. They explain why fat is not the great evil we have been told it is. ENJOY!

Thank you!

If I don't give up then I will become a winner. Good for you and your hard work. Linda

Hi Jimmy & Christine,
Today is day 8 and I am down 5 lbs already. My belly feels lighter and "clean" inside. Its so nice to not have that "stuffed" feeling EVER. I already downloaded your e-book but would not miss the chance to add a real book to my low carb collection I am starting. God Bless you both again. I always enjoy your videos :O) - Elaine

Well ok a comment that if I read all of those books I should lose weight just from the brain burn.
randy7771026 4 years ago
LOL! You'll certain burn a lot of calories from all the page turning--especially the Gary Taubes book that's over 600 pages long! ENJOY, Randy!

Hi Jimmy, Christine,
I have to say I love your new You tube series. How cool to be able to watch the two of you together. I really like the interaction between you two.
I have to thank you so much for all the motivation and inspiration. I don't think you will ever know just how much help you give all us out here trying to live a healthy low carb lifestyle. Sometimes it can be a lonely road, but you make it a joy too.
thank you again.

livinlowcarbman 4 years ago
I have a question for you. I did low carb once and lost a LOT of weight, but I gained it all back. I read somewhere that there is a "golden" time for low carbing and it only works the first time. Is that true? If I go back to low carbing will it work again?
iluvmy4blessings 4 years ago

Any tips would be appreciated on losing alot of weight... thanks ... DANO :)
SlimQuest 4 years ago

Great list but what happen to Protein Power?Mark
lcdmt1 4 years ago
THANKS Mark! Like I said, this book list was NOT a comprehensive one and I very well could have included MANY more like Protein Power by Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades. The focus of this list was to include the old and new books that have made the most difference in my low-carb life so far. I LOVE the Eades and think the world of what they are doing.

Always look forward to your video postings...Sometime it is very difficult to diet alone, but with Jimmy and Christine videos, I feel like I have a partner in this journey to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle. I pray that there will be many more people to discover the two of you so that they can start livin the "HEALTHY" lifestyle that is intended for all of us.
tiparker119 4 years ago
THANKS tiparker119! You've NAILED the reason why most people should be livin' la vida low-carb--it's all about being healthy. Weight loss is a nice side effect of eating low-carb, but controlling blood sugars and warding off disease is what makes this way of eating so worth it!
livinlowcarbman 4 years ago
Been meaning to comment. Started Atkins 8/26, reading the book for the second time and have lost 24lbs. so far. I was off insulin in 16 days! Listened to all your past podcasts and viewed your videos. Keep 'em comin'. And don't you ever stop Christine from saying, "Yeppers!" It has become a household word around here as my wife is Livin' La Vida Low Carb w/ me. Keep it up.
harknii 4 years ago
SEE YA!
