she's really good, but no one fixed a note error I'm and not are both on Cs, I think her I'm is an E, also sometimes her belt seems to go a bit flat, but in general shes really good. I really love whenever we see her vulnerability
This is my favorite version of this song. I sang this for an audition yesterday XD
I have my version on my channel, I only had one shot at it because i live in an apartment complex and i didn't want anybody to kill me for singing to loud. But if you guys could check it out, i would appreciate some feedback! =)
This made me cry. I wish my high school would put on a musical. Unfortunately it's a matter of money : / I was inducted the president of our thespian officers so maybe we could work on a fundraiser or something.
There is nothing different about any of the verses, her thoughts don't change once throughout the entire piece. There is no subtlety within this performance. There is also an overwhelming abundance of 'symmetrical-musical-theatre' gestures.
Amen, kezzza. You can't just know Broadway. It's a diffrent kind of knowing. Not the smart-ass "I-saw-the-Hairspray-movie-so-I-know-everything-kind", it's a "I-don't watch-shows-I'm-in-them" kind. Ya know?
oooh well arent you a stuck up thesbian tonbeauxhomme! haha. have you ever been on broadway? or are you claiming you ''know broadway as you do'' by the amount of shows you've seen? because that is NOT ''knowing broadway''. that is what people say when they think they are the dogs bollocks when they reaallly just arent. i think the girl did great. some of her vocals need a little more training but overall she did a great job...so jump out of your ass yeah?
I think it's just more of a personal thing, not actually supposed to add emphasis. It's just something you do when your trying to get those notes out there, I catch myself doing it when I sing. lol
Hmmm... her performance needed a bit more depth, jctcool1 is right, she seems too confident at the beginning. She's not really meant to be unafraid, just think she is. Still this is really good!
Beautifully sung ... but missing the point of the song ... too confident it is a very scared song but she is so confident sounding ... it's just art for art's sake now ... (Drums : Stick to what JRB wrote buddy)
i feel like shes supposed to be, and then she realizes how much of a baby David is, then she keeps telling her self, well if im less afraid then the man i love, then i must be really strong! and i agree, drums... jrb wrote everything for a reason...
HOW is this a scared song? She is singing about how she is NOT afraid...Seriously I think this girl is AWESOME and I have NO clue who she is...I'm just some random YouTuber...trust me though, I KNOW Broadway and there is NOTHING wrong with how this girl is performing here...
well knowing broadway. Way to Go Tom Handsome Man, then you'd also know JRB kept this off Broadway. Even though he got an offer to take it on. And if you believe she's doing a great job then obviously they are catering to your tastes and there's nothing wrong with that but my interpretation of the song (and of course since it's my opinion I think it to be right).
First, please let me state that it's "Ton" and it means "your." Second, I won't debate my knowledge of Jason Robert Brown. Do I believe you are entitled to your opinion? Absolutely. Do I agree on THIS? No. But that's beside the point. That's the point of debate. Regardless, it's what it is. I feel this girl deserves credit for doing a SMASHING job. She's so young, and talented beyond her years. If you have an issue with the way the song is portrayed blame her teacher. Not the girl.
Oh lala, excusé moi, s'il vous plaît. Mais, je pense ton commontaire est trés mechant a moi. And yes she did a great job, and perhaps my theatre experience has been much more hippy-esk and organic but in the highest end shows up here in the Twin Cities, but you are let to do what you want until the director stops you and changes it (it's director... and we learn on another song's comments he's another one of the kids. so he's probably not as firm, supporting my point further)
That's the point. Some music isn't supossed to be so straight forward. This is one that challenges your thinking. She could be trying to convince you, someone offstage, or (in my personal opinion in what came across in this interperitation) she's trying to convince herself.
That's my opinion, as well, which is why I posed the question to TonBeauxHomme in the first place. Some questions aren't meant to be so straightforward, either.
That being said, I rated this, "Nothing special." She sounds like she's trying to sound exactly like the original recording without really putting much of herself in the interpretation. I don't think she'd be able to get away with singing this in Barbara Cook's master classes, truth be told.
You were definitely my favourite in this show, watching the videos.
You made me fall in love with this song, and for that I thank you, you sing it beautifully and with maturity, in a sensible character that allows some emotional 'cracking'! x
Some of the vowel issues might be from the fact that (to my ear) she has a very Southern pronunciation when she's singing not in her head voice (I'm from the Midwest where anything south of Ohio is South). A good example is around 3:36 when she switches to her head voice. There is quite a difference.
I think this is one of the best renditions I've ever heard along with Heather's (from psychosoprano). Two totally different inpterpretations, two amazing performances.
That was a little out of the blue... No one mentioned children or husbands at all, except maybe the song itself. And lashing out at fictional characters... A little pathetic, don't you think?
the meaning of this song is that she IS afraid of a lot of things... but she's denying it. You got that emotion--but I feel like you could have portrayed it a LOT more
It really depends on your interpretation of the songs. It starts off where she's truly justifying herself; she really believes that she's not afraid of anything. And then she mention's David's name and boom- epiphany. She realizes that she's mortal.
ummm, this is amazing.....Jason Robert Brown is one of my hero's when it comes to Musicals, him and Sondheim are up there....and i'm gonna go see JRB in may 08!!!!!
Wow wowowoowow !! That was SO incredible. Whatever to everyone else, this was just so amazing. Seriously, the voice was so good, the acting was good. What isn't to like ? Fantastic.
its a young sound but its still nice... her voice is going to mature nicely, I'm sure. Also that's just a musical theateresque type style to sing with... she's got nice, bright vowels, that's all
geez, chill guys. i don't think it's nasally at all... i don't know if you were referring to the head voice or the belt, but neither are...... i think this is awesome. she's got stage presence and a real powerful voice, belting especially. good job!!
She is amazing - why did these people not have microphones?! It's hard to hear on some of the other videos. Melissa is amazing though (my favourite!) x
we did have microphones. otherwise you would hear absolutely nothing. The band sounds loud because the camera is closer to the band than to the singers.
this show is like, every song tells a different story, so this is the only song with THIS character, so basically, she sums up the character in this song
I feel like she was born to play Christine Daae in Phantom.
absolutely FANTASTIC!
