  • I feel like she was born to play Christine Daae in Phantom.

    absolutely FANTASTIC!

  • I'm crying because u sound so good that i was speechless and i did not know what else to do other than cry!!!!

  • like it very much!

  • This girl looks freakishly a lot like the music director of a musical I did this summer...

  • 25 people are afraid

  • she's really good, but no one fixed a note error I'm and not are both on Cs, I think her I'm is an E, also sometimes her belt seems to go a bit flat, but in general shes really good. I really love whenever we see her vulnerability

  • This is my favorite version of this song. I sang this for an audition yesterday XD

I have my version on my channel, I only had one shot at it because i live in an apartment complex and i didn't want anybody to kill me for singing to loud. But if you guys could check it out, i would appreciate some feedback! =)

  • im singing this for an audition!!!!

  • She has a pretty voice, but she didn't really get the intesity of the song on the first verse

  • Her voice is kind of weak on some parts... she was ok in my opinion...

  • soooo amazing.

i was going to do this one..

    now i think not.

  • Amzing

  • Great work honey! if you want a backing track for this song and more JRB tracks check out btracks.com

    keeep up the good work!

  • Oh my god AJ Holmes directed this!? Like the starkid potter AJHolmes!?!? I lovveee him!

  • My favorite version on Youtube. Lovely, just lovely, and her expressions are...perfect, poignant, moving. :)

  • SO GOOD!!!!!!!!

  • Holy Belting! 3:50

  • whats the highest note in this song?

  • @leenaluvsu the highest note is e''

  • So much emotion! Fantastic acting!

  • her voice is really weak , on a lot of the parts

  • @SatenWonton No, it's just the volume....

  • This is such a beautiful song, and this is an amazing version.

  • THANK YOU for keeping your feet planted while standing singing to the audience! so many people shuffle around.

  • This made me cry. I wish my high school would put on a musical. Unfortunately it's a matter of money : / I was inducted the president of our thespian officers so maybe we could work on a fundraiser or something.

  • this is amazing!!! i recently started listening to this because my little sister was singing it for a voice recital and i fell in love with it!!!!

  • wow.

  • woow that was awesome! i wanna see the whole show now

  • There is nothing different about any of the verses, her thoughts don't change once throughout the entire piece. There is no subtlety within this performance. There is also an overwhelming abundance of 'symmetrical-musical-theatre' gestures.

  • Dear Melissa...remember how you were 17 when you did this and it was amazing? yah...love your guts and happy happy birthday! :)

  • At jctcool1:

She's got it half right. The character is confident at the beginning, but slowly realizes that she is afraid of David not loving her.

    -Lisa

  • Amen, kezzza. You can't just know Broadway. It's a diffrent kind of knowing. Not the smart-ass "I-saw-the-Hairspray-movie-so-I-know-everything-kind", it's a "I-don't watch-shows-I'm-in-them" kind. Ya know?

    -Lisa

  • ok but i've herd better

  • oooh well arent you a stuck up thesbian tonbeauxhomme! haha. have you ever been on broadway? or are you claiming you ''know broadway as you do'' by the amount of shows you've seen? because that is NOT ''knowing broadway''. that is what people say when they think they are the dogs bollocks when they reaallly just arent. i think the girl did great. some of her vocals need a little more training but overall she did a great job...so jump out of your ass yeah?

    x

  • I get to see the show tomorrow! I'm so excited.

  • I got shivers!

    This is amazing!

    :)

  • I love this song. I want to see this show. I wish someone would do this show near me so I can see it or maybe even be in it!

  • Oh. My. God. The ARMS! it's not the wizard and I, and its not helping you belt out those notes. It was good but the arms were SO ditracting

  • I think it's just more of a personal thing, not actually supposed to add emphasis. It's just something you do when your trying to get those notes out there, I catch myself doing it when I sing. lol

  • Hmmm... her performance needed a bit more depth, jctcool1 is right, she seems too confident at the beginning. She's not really meant to be unafraid, just think she is. Still this is really good!

  • Beautifully sung ... but missing the point of the song ... too confident it is a very scared song but she is so confident sounding ... it's just art for art's sake now ... (Drums : Stick to what JRB wrote buddy)

  • I dont think so, because the character actually thinks that she isnt afraid, and then BAM! she realizes is.

  • i feel like shes supposed to be, and then she realizes how much of a baby David is, then she keeps telling her self, well if im less afraid then the man i love, then i must be really strong! and i agree, drums... jrb wrote everything for a reason...

  • HOW is this a scared song? She is singing about how she is NOT afraid...Seriously I think this girl is AWESOME and I have NO clue who she is...I'm just some random YouTuber...trust me though, I KNOW Broadway and there is NOTHING wrong with how this girl is performing here...

  • well knowing broadway. Way to Go Tom Handsome Man, then you'd also know JRB kept this off Broadway. Even though he got an offer to take it on. And if you believe she's doing a great job then obviously they are catering to your tastes and there's nothing wrong with that but my interpretation of the song (and of course since it's my opinion I think it to be right).

  • First, please let me state that it's "Ton" and it means "your." Second, I won't debate my knowledge of Jason Robert Brown. Do I believe you are entitled to your opinion? Absolutely. Do I agree on THIS? No. But that's beside the point. That's the point of debate. Regardless, it's what it is. I feel this girl deserves credit for doing a SMASHING job. She's so young, and talented beyond her years. If you have an issue with the way the song is portrayed blame her teacher. Not the girl.

  • Oh lala, excusé moi, s'il vous plaît. Mais, je pense ton commontaire est trés mechant a moi. And yes she did a great job, and perhaps my theatre experience has been much more hippy-esk and organic but in the highest end shows up here in the Twin Cities, but you are let to do what you want until the director stops you and changes it (it's director... and we learn on another song's comments he's another one of the kids. so he's probably not as firm, supporting my point further)

  • @TonBeauxHomme

But who is she trying to tell that she's not afraid? The listener?

    Or herself?

  • That's the point. Some music isn't supossed to be so straight forward. This is one that challenges your thinking. She could be trying to convince you, someone offstage, or (in my personal opinion in what came across in this interperitation) she's trying to convince herself.

  • @stonestage1

That's my opinion, as well, which is why I posed the question to TonBeauxHomme in the first place. Some questions aren't meant to be so straightforward, either.

  • @TonBeauxHomme

That being said, I rated this, "Nothing special." She sounds like she's trying to sound exactly like the original recording without really putting much of herself in the interpretation. I don't think she'd be able to get away with singing this in Barbara Cook's master classes, truth be told.

  • so amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! best version of this song on youtube for sure.

  • A lovely performance of a difficult song. BRAVA!

  • My voice teacher told me to pick out a good version of this song on youtube cause this is the song I'm singin. I picked this one your AMAZING.

  • YESSSSSSSS GIRL U BETTA SING!

  • She nails it! Amazing.

  • Songs for a new world comes to Upstairs at the gatehouse in London feb7th-14 2009 visit the theatre website or ticketweb to buy tickets :D

  • she's great!

  • wow, this is very well done - acting, singing, the whole package! Kudos to the performer!

  • i love this song!!!

  • I love the way this song is sung!!!! amazing acting and singing!!

  • You were definitely my favourite in this show, watching the videos.

You made me fall in love with this song, and for that I thank you, you sing it beautifully and with maturity, in a sensible character that allows some emotional 'cracking'! x

  • I really enjoyed this...I wish the music was a little softer so you could be heard better...but WOW, marvelouus job!

  • this is a very nice rendition.. you have a very lovely voice and the acting is in check

in fact, I really enjoyed all the clips of this performance of Songs For a New World

    Excellent job!

  • its good but theres a video of a girl named maddie and i think she did very well too

i like your acting a little better though but she blew me away with her voice. you might want to check it out its on my favoirte list

  • she did have an amazing voice

  • Anybody know where i can get the music for this :]

  • Buy the book by any chance?

  • just singing! i like the choices.

  • this is amazing!!!

  • damn girl. im jealous . you can belt. unlike me. lol

  • Some of the vowel issues might be from the fact that (to my ear) she has a very Southern pronunciation when she's singing not in her head voice (I'm from the Midwest where anything south of Ohio is South). A good example is around 3:36 when she switches to her head voice. There is quite a difference.

I think this is one of the best renditions I've ever heard along with Heather's (from psychosoprano). Two totally different inpterpretations, two amazing performances.

  • holy camolly! SPARKLE GIRL SPARKLE!

  • You just gave me shivers...the good kind! Great job!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!

  • holy wow. Ive watched nearly all the videos of this song and was SURE i found the best one....till i watched this one!

  • That was a little out of the blue... No one mentioned children or husbands at all, except maybe the song itself. And lashing out at fictional characters... A little pathetic, don't you think?

  • Naw, he's pissed because he doesn't think people under thirty should sing these songs because he's a stupid conservative.

  • I liked it

  • the meaning of this song is that she IS afraid of a lot of things... but she's denying it. You got that emotion--but I feel like you could have portrayed it a LOT more

  • It really depends on your interpretation of the songs. It starts off where she's truly justifying herself; she really believes that she's not afraid of anything. And then she mention's David's name and boom- epiphany. She realizes that she's mortal.

  • I honestly thought you were a professional...OMGOODESS

  • Fantastic voice.Good job

  • This is great!

  • ummm, this is amazing.....Jason Robert Brown is one of my hero's when it comes to Musicals, him and Sondheim are up there....and i'm gonna go see JRB in may 08!!!!!

  • nice

  • sounds great~!

  • This is a great song. I love it. I've never seen the show but I would love to.

  • i sang this song for recitle

  • is this from the new musical 13?

  • NO!! songs for a new world

  • Nice vocally, but this piece is such a strong acting song, i think the acting could have used more work, but still good!

  • Wow wowowoowow !! That was SO incredible. Whatever to everyone else, this was just so amazing. Seriously, the voice was so good, the acting was good. What isn't to like ? Fantastic.

  • She sounds kind of like Susan Egan...

  • OH YES! AAH loved it!

  • This was like the 2nd or 3rd best version of these if heard im sure it was better live too, cos ive only seen it live good acting!

  • its a young sound but its still nice... her voice is going to mature nicely, I'm sure. Also that's just a musical theateresque type style to sing with... she's got nice, bright vowels, that's all

  • LOVELY!!!

  • geez, chill guys. i don't think it's nasally at all... i don't know if you were referring to the head voice or the belt, but neither are...... i think this is awesome. she's got stage presence and a real powerful voice, belting especially. good job!!

  • yes it does sound slightly nasally? but she is very good.

  • I think I liked you better in the opening song.

A lot of these notes were very beautiful, but then some of them were nasaly(sp?),

but you are a very talented singer.

  • I dont like the way she forms her vowels.

    Very nasal and young sounding.

Like a little girl screaming the song.

    Other than that awesome job;

    Its a good start.

  • Great job....sometimes you should watch the overacting. But overall, great performance!

  • really great job - a fully realized and mature performance

  • im pretty sure they were had mics, or else you wouldnt have heard them over the pit

  • She is amazing - why did these people not have microphones?! It's hard to hear on some of the other videos. Melissa is amazing though (my favourite!) x

  • we did have microphones. otherwise you would hear absolutely nothing. The band sounds loud because the camera is closer to the band than to the singers.

  • her voice sounds kinda..."little girl" for this song but..whatev! good job

  • my sister sang this and the santa song from songs for a world

  • Holy heck.. That was fantastic!! Truly amazing! Awesome belter and gave me chills!! Nice work!

  • is this high school because if it is she's amazing

  • WONDERFUL.

  • Well done, very good!

  • very talented young lady.

  • Wow. WOW! I loved her "so watch me fly"! This is not an easy song to sing by any means, and she did brilliantly.

  • she was amazing, and gorgeous to boot.

  • thanks for posting! What is this character? I'm not familiar with the musical...so could someone help me out? Thanks!

  • Wow.

Her character was so developed and it was beautifully done. I enjoyed every minute of it. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Spectacular

  • this show is like, every song tells a different story, so this is the only song with THIS character, so basically, she sums up the character in this song

  • She has some seriously brilliant points in this song. Good for her! :)

  • AWESOME
