The reason why the film's songs are more polished is because it's a movie in Hollywood. I know a few people who love musical films but have never heard any Broadway performances, or seen them. Anybody who saw the film who hadn't seen the show before wouldn't be able to understand why Maureen's show would be awful (I was one of them until I saw the last performance dvd). Basically it boils down to it's hollywood, they want polished, not raw. Either way Idina sounds awesome

@aparjmwhdvtdfwim I would argue with that. Her performance as Elphie in Wicked has a similar polished and girly quality to her movie performance in RENT. I'd argue it was a result of the vocal training she went through for Wicked, which made her an overall more confident and technically talented performer, but took away the quirkiness which landed her both roles.

her voice is so strong. she's awesome, even back then she amazes me. it's crazy though, i think she's one of the few people who has grown more beautiful as she ages. of course she was gorgeous back then in 1992, but she's even prettier now.

No, it wasn't. Jonathan Larson died before the Off-Broadway debut. This is opening night on Broadway.
