@Period0fAltering You could get hurt for saying something like that... Albeit, it's truth-derived, but this is a "sensitive generation." Watch yourself
my teacher saied he watched this in his 2nd grade class the when it blew up his teacher turned off the t.v and saied "ok class lets talk about fractions"
@limacarlos1013 I thought that was really weird how they said that too!
But actually think the people who were talking on the radios weren't actually watching the Challenger. I think they were looking at monitors of engine readings and what not. And when it exploding, everything must have just stopped on the readings. That's just my guess.
The O-Rings of a space shuttle, (rubber part that keeps combustible gases inside), can only work under temperatures warmer than about 45-50 degrees Fahrenheit. If any colder, they may become brittle or stiff and may not work properly and let the gases out. THERE WAS ICE ON THE LAUNCH PAD. These damn idiots KNEW that they were putting these people at risk. They are responsible for these people's deaths.
some of these comments are focussed on the money lost and poor mission control... but honestly, who cares? just think about how the people on board lost their lives instantly. it's incredibly devastating when you think about it.
Other than Russia, no other country was trying to. Besides, it was the genius of Wernher Von Braun and his Nazi rocket engineering cohorts that put a man on the moon, US financed but all German research and tech...
@Vocizo I'm no expert in these sort of things. but it's what I've been led to believe in all these websites claiming it was all fake. personally i think that nobody had the technology in that era to do this......
@shaantheone You know you said 85% of Americans are brainwashed right? For now the moon landing are taken as fact and proven otherwise. Those sites make a compelling argument, but after seeing shuttles take off with my own two eyes, I believe it to be true.
@Vocizo I guess we can never know the actual truth. Even some U.S. citizens find this fact hard to swallow, that their astronauts have been to the moon. There are both types believers and non-believers. I guess I'm inclined to the latter......
@brooklynbridgehi the crew cab compartment and nose of the shuttle were intact when the breakup occurred. They were alive before they hit the water at 200+ mph.
we will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for the journey and waved goodbye and 'slipped the surly bonds of earth' to 'touch the face of god
@djmm25 Stupid islamic extremist. Why can't you just except peoples beliefs rather than blowing shit up? It proves that your belief system is 2nd class.

@rewindablender because it was extreeeemmmmely important they got down as much information about the crash as it happened as well as doing whatever they could to salvage something
@moontheloon518 pfft, no thats not what happened, the O rings failed to expand in the full throttle up because of the freezing temperatures and the escaping gasses burned through and exploded the external fuel tank
a rubber o-ring expanded and came lose of the chassis, fuel leaked out through the hole where that ring was. the fuel contacted the fire, the fire burned the spilled fuel, the heat triggered an explosion of the entire left booster
@randommusicify The o-rings expand to fill the gap between segments to prevent burn thru's. The cold weather prevented the o-ring from expanding. The fuel is solid. It doesnt spill. The burning fuel had a path through the joint to go because of the failed o-ring. The fire severed the strut which caused the booster to swing into the fuel tank causing it to collaspe. The rest you know.

NASA is responsible for their deaths
@64MojoMan Morton Thiokol made the booster. The booster engineer told booster Mgt. that it wasnt a good idea to launch but could not prove it. Booster Mgt. signed off on the launch. Nasa didnt know it until after the fact. Nasa is not the only people who sign off for launch. It includes the tank people (Lockheed), the orbiter people (Rockwell or Lockheed) and the crew. The perfect storm happened and that was the result.
@aimhigh59 the key in the perfect storm was the 300mph jet stream that day that knocked loose the aluminum slag from the burning rocket fuel that had plugged the aft field joint where the o-ring had failed due to the cold at liftoff. It did not explode on the launch pad as Thiokol Engineer Boisjoly had warned as the slag had temporarily sealed the joint. After encountering the jet stream, the slag broke free and the flame that doomed the mission developed out of the right SRB.
