  • I miss KiteTales :(

  • I like gameplay vids with commentary but I watch them mainly for the commentary. I like minecraft videos with multiple people playing a custom map or survival map suck as; paulsoaresjr with man woman minecraft, Chimneyswift11 with LuclinMCWB and Wolv21 on skyblock v2.1 survival, and games like Amnesia where Gamesandstuffs plays through custom stories and has fun commentary. I like to play some minecraft maps while watching others play on the same map. Makes it fun [out of characters :( ]

  • Get better soon-3

  • Poor kiteTails! T.T Get better soon! Play Minecraft, drink lots of fluids and stay warm :)

  • If I'm thinking of buying a game I usually watch some gameplay footage and commentaries beforehand. Otherwise the commentary has to be very entertaining (Yogscast + Minecraft = instawin :D) or the gameplay footage has to be somewhat epic (speedruns and BF zooks are fun). Also, get well soon!

  • I watch for gameplay videos for specific reasons. 1.) I do it to get information on a boss, dungeon, tips to spec my class, etc. 2.) I also do it to see if I want to purchase the game for myself or not. To get a feel if I would enjoy playing it. How are the mechanics of the game? Is it designed for easy integration or is there adjustability needed on my part as a player? How is the storyline? Is it poor or will it immerse me into the plot?

  • I like watching for the game mostly. I remember that when i was a little kid i always preferred to watch my cousins play sonic the hedgehog on their sega genesis or crash bandicoot on their playstation rather than play myself. I always felt like i was watching a movie. But of course now that im older and actually good at video games i prefer to play myself but occasionally i still enjoy watching other people play just for the gameplay. Good commentary is just an added bonus for me.

  • I started watching Minecraft LPs just to get started in learning how to play the game. I think it can be motivating and inspiring to see what other people are doing in a creative game like Minecraft. However, a lot more of what I find myself watching now depends mostly on how interesting or entertaining the commentator can be consistently. Also, I don't like the idea of watching story-based games that I haven't played yet because of the inevitable spoilers.

  • I'd rather be playing. Especially if the videos aren't well made. Which is why I watch TetraForce! Well made and worth watching.

  • For videos, it depends on the game. I like seeing what people do in sandbox/open world games, but with point A to B games I only really watch them if I'm stuck in said game. I do like using them as references for Minecraft builds and sometimes art, though.

I find it harder to watch gameplay in real life. It's difficult for me to watch when I see how other people mess up. I guess I want to help them... and by help I mean rip the controller out of their hands and do it myself. :P

  • @aerendyll I have the exact same opinion as you except that I love watching entertaining commentators play linear games :P

  • I enjoy watching gameplay when I don't have the game they are playing, the funnies are an added bonus!

  • you got cooties from mazer, I'm sure that's what it's from.

I would think that gameplay commentary is the only reason you'd want to watch someone play, because it's likely the game content is the same. I really enjoy Far Lands or Bust with kurtjmac, if you like minecraft let's play's I'd recommend his videos.

  • Oh yeah! Get better, Kitetales! :-)

lots of vitamin C, chicken soup, water, rest, hot buttered lemonade, or whatever concoction you're accustomed to!

  • I never really watched gameplay videos until Minecraft, and for some reason I find those addicting. Strange. David's "X's adventures in Minecraft" brought me back for each episode, to see what was going to happen to him and what he would learn next. He usually keeps pretty interesting dialog going as well, which adds a lot. Inspires me to give it a go someday!

  • no matter how sick,i'm sure sarah is as beautiful as always

  • I usualy do not enjoy watching people play games, unless of course the commentary is really good (funny, interesting etc.) But for minecraft, I enjoy most LPs, because you are not watching a set story with boring killing etc, you are watching someone shape their own game an be creative, an that is awsome.

  • i watch gameplay videos for the commentary and sometimes to learn about a raid boss in WoW. I am usually playing a game while having the video in the background.

  • If the person playing is enjoying themselves and are entertaining/funny, then it's great. Although there's nothing like playing the game yourself with your friends :)

  • If I understand this correctly, then I enjoy watching gameplay videos when the commentator is interesting, funny and informative. Have a look at TotalBiscuit's "WTF is..." videos, which are first impressions, not Let's Plays, and you may see what I mean. The current realm of Let's Play videos are hard for me to watch. Though, Let's Play videos on games no one wants to play interest me when the narrator is entertaining, funny to listen to and informative on the topic.

  • I watch SC2 matches and games im not sure if thay good, and i watch it when i play games like minecraft and games that u dont really need to focus.

    And often charity live streams=)

    Great video as allways=D

  • I watch gameplay videos for games I suck at, either to pick up strategies or just to see what happens in the rest of the game. In the case of something like Minecraft, its just fun to see what other people come up with, like building stuff with Legos and then showing what you made to other people. Then there is stuff like speed-running or no-damage runs that are just jaw-droppingly awesome.

  • I enjoy game play videos mostly for the person playing. Sometimes its for educational purposes like redstone tutorial or seeing how someone got past a part that I couldn't figure out or see how someone else passed a part of a game. Though I also watch some for the total humor. Watching someone play a game in a silly or not intended way. Like yogscast doing adventure maps and ending up breaking rules. its actually funny. So in conclusion it is mostly the people I watch gameplay for.

  • I only really watch game play videos of games I don't plan on playing or already have played so I don't get spoilers but generally I watch them more for the personalities of the people who are playing them.

  • @KiteTails Bloody iPads I know how your feeling as I'm suffering from flu atm too and I feel like death (oh the joys of being able to watch YouTube in bed). I do watch gameplay videos but only ones created by certain people such as HAT Films, Dead Workers Party, Knightwing01 (KWing) mainly for the people actually doing the LP but also for the games they show case. Such as KWing does a lot of 'retro' games (god it's odd to call his LPs retro). Anyway get well soon

  • @KiteTails I know how your feeling. Ive got flu at the moment too and I feel like absolute crap (oh the joys of iPads and the Yutube app

  • If the person playing the game has a good personality i usually enjoy them. Its really funny to watch someone playing badly freak out about it. I'll even watch guides to games if the people going over the content are interesting enough!

    Get Well Soon KiteTales!

  • I am a Let's Player myself, but I do not watch gameplay videos often. There are some Let's Player which I enjoy because of their commentary, but thats it. ^^

Oh and: "Gute Besserung, KiteTales." (German) ^^

  • Mostly for the commentary! Or tutorials sometimes.

  • I watch them for the commentary, I only listen to Seananners videos, I couldn't care less about the COD gameplay but he always has interesting opinions and thoughts.

  • It all depends on how its presented. The video either needs to be shot in a unique way or show off something unique or funny (like glitch videos), or the narrator needs to be interesting or funny, or a combo of all. Hearing and watching just a standard gameplay puts me to sleep.

  • I see some gameplay videos just so i can see if the game is good enough so it will not be a waste of money, depending of the game, i like to see videos of other things in it, such as creations (minecraft) , secret areas, and if i can't get it legit, how to get some trophies on the ps3 :D. Recently i have been watching lots of play troughs, because they're really funny (if you like them) and they help making the time pass when you're bored.

  • I'm just going to let the others answer this one :P

PS: I feel bad for you :'( call for a doctor, the Whole World is going to come to the rescue :D, hope you get well soon. ;)

  • When it comes to Minecraft I like to see the different creations people made or how different mods work.

But the "Let's play"-videos are kind of boring. Axcept for Hat Films. They are funny.

  • Good luck in TOR - and get well IRL!!!! Haha...

  • Hope you feel better BTW. Take your vitamins!

  • If a game I buy has a prequel then I might watch a Let's play of it. Mostly I watch walkthrough's though. Let's play's are like trying to watch a movie with someone who won't shut up.

  • It depends on the commentator, I really like watching Minecraft Let's Plays, but if it wasn't for MinecraftWB (aka Luclin) and Paulsoaresjr's Let's Plays of SWTOR, I wouldn't have ended up Buying it. So I think for me it has to do with a touch of both content & commentator.

  • I watch for personality so the content doesn't matter per say, as long as it isn't something rlly weird and out there.

  • Do trailers count? =p It depends why I'm watching in the first place. As a recreational activity I am subscribed to bluexephos and davidr64yt and at one point tobygames. But if I'm looking for cast competitive games or strategy videos or just gameplay videos to decide on a purchase I don't have a preference as long as the video quality is good.

  • Play on iron citadel!

  • I watch Let's Plays mostly to preview a game before I plan on buying it. Sometimes, I watch for the entertainment value, but it's not often.

  • Get well soon Sarge!

I watch some gameplay videos to see if I would like the game, but I mostly watch videos because of the person, if they are particularly interesting or funny. I often have YouTube in a second window listening to the person while doing my own stuff.

  • @KiteTales o.O but..but... You make gamepla~never mind.

    *pat on head*

Get some sleep. Feel better soon. :D

  • Sometimes, I'm literally too lazy to actually play a game, so I watch gameplay videos. Also, in many a good gameplay video, the commentary is ingeniously funny.

And in semi-rare cases, I do both... i.e. watching a video in a browser window while playing a game in another window.

  • I'm a bit balanced. Sometimes I watch games because I want to know what the game is about but can't run it/afford it/take time for it, and it gives me a chance to see it. Sometimes I just like the person's commentary. Usually they're funny, but some kind of annoy me, but I like their takes on things in the game.

One reason I don't like watching it, but it doesn't stop me, is I get frustrated if they don't play in a way I would play, or miss something I catch, but that's just be being a turd.

  • I usually watch for the person. and I honestly don't care what you look like. you are probably pretty no matter what

  • finally :D !

  • I WANT TO SEE THAT

  • Damn, this game looks gay as fuck B.

  • Very good question. There is only one or two people that I like watching their let's plays of video games and that is only because of their commentary. However, I really enjoy Minecraft let's plays to get ideas on what I can build in my game.

  • I watch gameplay vids for these two reasons because I enjoy gameplay vids and because watching gameplay vids I get to see if I would like to play the game myself so that I don't waste my money on a game that I would end up hating.

    Get Well Soon

    INSANITY!

  • I watch a lot of gameplay videos mostly for the hilarious banter of the players sometimes I'll watch gameplay footage of new indie games to buy on Steam or whatever to get a taster of the game and see if I'll enjoy it more.

    Get Well Soon :D

  • I usually find gameplay videos boring unless there are people narrating and they're funny. My friend and I started a channel a while back, it's actually similar to tetraforce how we just play casually, mess around and make jokes. That's the sort of stuff I enjoy. (We didn't copy tetraforce, we didn't know about it but both started very close together.)

  • @regulushero I only have three things to say to you

    1. You're not the only one with an opinion

    2. Other people have opinions and some of them( probably most) will be different than yours, (holy shit right)

    3. Stop being such a pretentious dick and get over yourself

  • @SirAwesomeSauce69 I can say, with complete sincerety, that your nontrivial youtube comment has opened my eyes, eyes which have never known light: a metaphor for the understanding of others. I didn't realize I was being such a pretentious dick until you made that astonishingly profound observation about my attitude. With some of your wisdom maybe now I can grow as a person, get my life straight, learn to be secure with my ideas. Thank you, friend. I'm a new man.

  • @regulushero the thing is, as sarcasm is hard to convey with text, i can't tell if you're still being a dick or being honest. >.<

  • @SirAwesomeSauce69 I was sarcastic that time. But, now I'm for real, so no more being a dick for me.

  • I think it depends on both the game and the narator, games like dwarf fortress, terraria, minecraft and project zomboid are all games where everyones experience is different and limitless, they are the kind of games i like to watch. Altough i like watching LPs and such it is all pointless if the commentator is skilled in some commentary way

  • I sometimes watch XpertTheif's gameplay videos and I like his voice and his narrating style. He is SOOO funny when he is narrating in his videos sometimes. I typically like it when females narrate a game because that tells a guy like me that she is not afraid of being picked on by some guys just for being a girl.

  • Well I watch certain gameplay videos, some that have commentary which makes for more entertainment in its form than those with none, some gameplay video that one of my best friends upload from time to time I watch mostly for vids without commentary. But it basically depends on the mood, to be honest, like if I'm watching gameplay vids of a game, that I want or already own, and it's good then I'd all out to want to play it.

  • I love watching competitive gameplays (like wcg finals and stuff). Also, sometimes I just can't afford to buy a game so I'll just watch the gameplay and "pretend" that I played it so I can talk with my friends :D

  • Most of the time I try to watch for the dialogue of the person playing the game but if I'm looking for what a game is like before I buy it I'll watch gameplay without commentary, by the way just wanted to ask you kitetales have you ever play shadow of the colossus and ico on ps2 or ps3? If not u should look for them, they're fantastic games! PS: hope u feel better :)

  • I watch mostly for the narrator, even then, it has to be on PC (which you're doing) and if it's a female then that's bonus points. But since it's Commander Kite it's like infinite added points of awesomeness and I must watch. Soooooooooo yeah :D

  • STOP BEING SICK! IT’S NOT HEALTHY!

I like watching Minecraft videos, like the ones Hatventures, AntVenom, and Tobuscus do. I think this is mainly due to my obsession with Minecraft (due to its variability) and for the commentating skills of the above people.

Personally, I’d like Tetraforce’s videos to include more than just highlights so I know more of what’s going on.

    0===(}TexasBlade>>

  • I only watch gameplay videos if the host is hilarious or the content is fascinating or both. For instance, I like Video Games Awesome because of the casual environment they have: it's just one to five people hanging out having fun and sometimes even riffing the game they're playing like when they played Catherine or The Room: The Game. Far Lands or Bust is also great because it's just a guy walking and talking, and coming across awesome cool stuff.

  • I'd rather watch PC gaming and to play XBox360

  • @Martinsleep Meh probably

  • It really depends on the game, the game type, and who's and how it is commentated. I enjoy some Let's Plays of older games and I'll watch some streams here and there. It's interesting to me because I like seeing the way others play games and how it is different from how I play.

Just a note here, dark circle eyed kitetales surrounded by tissues is something I actually would like to see! xD Do feel better soon though!

  • I hate when YouTube has to buffer when I have freaking fast Internet. *sigh*

  • @SquareDot26 Then you dont have internet fast enuff I have never buffered and my internet speed is 100 mb/s

  • Let's Plays are about the person talking about the thought of "would I even KNOW ABOUT and/or PLAY this game myself?" A big balance of both. If they're boring, who cares how interesting the game is, it will be boring because a boring person is commentating. If it's obscure (and especially if the person has played the game before so they're good at it) then I see little reason to get it.

Also, it promotes sales of games and gives old OLD games free advertisement for companies.

  • I would only watch gameplay video to check the game out and see what it's like if I wanted to buy or download it. Not into commentary gameplay, although some Machinima's are really good - like Kevin's How to Annoy People, that was my absolute favorite gameplay.

  • i like to watch lets plays and stuff like that (longer than 10 mins) because im mostly home by myself, and it makes me feel like im not so alon.

  • @regulushero I'm sorry but I didn't realise that you're the only person with a valid opinion here. You may not like him, but I do, and by the look of his subscriber count, so do a lot of people. Also, I can comment about whatever I want here.

  • @DanP47 Wow, so subscriber count dictates the legitimacy of a youtube channel? You ought to subscribe to Lady Gaga's Vevo and kiss What the Buck on the mouth if you're going to say something as pig ignorant as that.

  • @regulushero tisk tisk... This is all I'm gonna say about this so don't even bother replying. I've been reading the drama that's been ensuing and I can see you think you're smart. But did you ever think that validating a channel by subscribers may also imply that one with a low subscriber count is just undiscovered not just bad? If this were my channel I'd block you.

  • @TheRegalRolston I'm not going to assume YOU DIDN'T READ THE DRAMA, but I will point out that what I just said does coincide with what you said just now anyways. Yes, subscriber count is irrelevant, that was my point. It's all relative, What the Buck is very subscribed, but not for everyone's personal taste. Same goes for low sub channels which are very good.

No, I don't think im smart. Don't be intimidated, I'm not trying to antagonize anyone but the Tobuscus fan.

  • @regulushero And remember it's easy to feel powerful and talk big on the internet. But there's a little saying that goes: A true test of a man is to give him power and see what he does with it. So what does that say about you?

  • @TheRegalRolston Also, you do realize the irony of saying:

"A true test of a man is to give him power and see what he does with it."

and, "If this were my channel I'd block you."

I'm cruel at times, but im not a facist. I would never block you or the Tobuscus fan, just because you don't agree with me. I hope that you are the same way, and that was some kind of hyperbolic joke.

  • @regulushero How about you read what I actually wrote? I said that I like him and enjoy his videos and therefore subscribe to him, and clearly everyone else who subscribes enjoys his videos as well. So you don't like videos, fair enough, but it's not your place to decide which channels are 'legitimate'.

  • @DanP47 I haven't taken any stabs at the legitimacy of channels. Tobuscus makes plenty of cash advertising pathetic to pathetic people like you. In that sense, he has done a good job of bastardizing the comedy development process to the point where he can literaly roll out of bed and release a contrived mess in 10 minutes, make some money for it. I commend him for this.

But we are on an honest channel right now, and saying Tobuscus is funny here is a backbiting act of blasphemy.

  • I watch those videos because of the commentator, not the gameplay.

    :)

    -Eter

  • I enjoy the banter between folks in a Let's Play. Solo Let's Plays are not enjoyable for me. I hope you start feeling better, darling.

  • Get better soon! I enjoy watching gameplay videos from various commentators if they are interesting and fun to listen to. On the other hand I would rather play the game myself in most cases.

If I own the game and don't want to play it at that moment, I don't intend on buying the game or thinking of buying the game and a favorite commentator has gameplay of it, then I watch them play it because of the person that is narrating and there are plenty that I love watching on a daily basis.

  • I enjoy all three options. I love to play games, love to watch games with intense storylines since it's basically like watching a really really really long movie, and love gameplay commentary depending on the commentator.

  • Okay, I've not seen this game before. Is that thing at 1:40 and Iridonian? It looks so silly.

  • I enjoy watching gameplay for the commentator. Tobuscus (Look him up when your better, hes really funny) playing certain games, and UberHaxorNova playing Happy Wheels (Dont watch any of them, the laughing would only make you more sick) Because it is possibly one of the funniest series on Youtube ever. I really do hope you get better soon, and some time when you are more able, I would enjoy watching you play Minecraft or some other game maybe?

  • Btw it's Tobuscus' gameplay videos that I watch, they're hilarious :D

  • @DanP47 Tobuscus is unfunny, typical in the worst possible ways and shows little to no effort in his videos. When you are on a channel like this, you take your golden calf bullshit elsewhere.

  • I watch gameplay videos mostly for the person (or people) involved and don't really care what the game is that they play, I just really enjoy listening to people talk and hear their thoughts on various things.

btw, your Star Wars character is cute :)

  • I find that gameplay videos are only interesting if it is addressing a very focused aspect of a game or giving a tutorial on something specific. Otherwise, I'm looking for a unique narrator's voice to be talking about things that pique and maintain my interest.

  • i watch game play because i cant afford the game

  • I watch them if I like the game or find it interesting, and the person narrating is funny :). Most of the videos I watch are of games that I don't have, so if they play through most of the game, it also saves me buying it.

  • I love game-play's if they're actually worth watching. I love watching Minecraft game-play from UberHaxorNoava. He is hilarious. I don't quite know if I would say I like to watch his gameplay's more so than myself playing, but it sure is great fun to watch his stuff when I don't really feel like playing, or if my friends can't play with me at the time. n_n

  • i cant stand watching gameplay videos unless its a game i already own and im using it for help or comedy :D
