That was band leader Guy Lombardo

  • Great stuff! The music is the Larry Clinton Orch with Bea Wain singing. I loved the shot of Kay Francis and Walter Brennan! In the shot of Spencer and Mrs.(?) Tracy...he is shaking hands with bandleader Abe Lyman, right? And who is the other man at the table?

  • @teebeesea THanks for your comment, yes that is Abe Lyman shaking hands with Tracy and the other man in the picture is unidentified.

  • I enjoyed this picture show !!!!

According to one of David Niven's autobiographies, back in those days they let the photographers in to take their pictures, when everybody sat with whom they were supposed to sit with. After the photographers had left the real parties begun and they begun to mix and mingle (So to say).

  • Just finished a biography of Bing Crosby and was checking out the old Hollywood, big band era 20's 30's, and came across this great little clip.

What a fantastic time this must have been for those lucky enough to be working for a studio. These palms came from the set of "The sheik" starring Rudolph Valentino...Abe Frank who owned the Grove bought them to give the place an exotic feel....:) Bing got his first big solo's here in 29-30.

  • These were great to watch. Thank you for sharing these with us.

  • Seventy years ago! The music is perfect for this vid of nostalgic Hollywood in its greatest year, 1939...and still in its innocence just before the massive disruption of World War II. This was the generation who established film in the world's imagination. The Gable Lombard photo is particularly touching since she died in a terrible plane crash on a war bonds drive during the war....Gable was never the same again. Needs more pics though....

  • Lovely video! Thank you so much for sharing;))

  • I love this, I wish Hollywood still had such sophistication in 2009 as it did 70 years ago!
