A thoroughly professional job, from top to bottom. Arrangement, melody, choreography, and most of all performance--everything is perfect! Even her dress is terrific! Of course, she had to complete against an Israeli transsexual singing an internationally successful disco anthem. Is she American? At one point, she cries out "C'mon everybody!", and her accent is perfect. Also, her singing style is very "American."
I'm stuck between this and the UK in 1998. Maybe being British I'm biased but I think Imaani was a class act and it was very modern just like this. Two songs in Eurovision that were actually cool.
Another wonderful orchestration by Dick Backer (see also 1997), together with the fabulous BBC Concert Orchestra! Why can't such things happen at Eurovision any more?
Fantastic song. One of the best dutch entries ever. So much better than the rubbish we send in the last 10 years. I was in Oslo at the 2010 competition and was ashamed to be dutch because of the hiddeous smurf song of sineke. Netherlands, please stop participating in this contest unless you come up with someting that's worth listening to.
This song is just so good and should have won. She is a great singer and handles the big stage so well. Some great songs from Netherlands in the 1990's.
@inspireradavstatyer I think the Dutch just got fed up trying, year after year. Eurovision apathy is running higher each year. Most Dutch people believe that Eurovision, in the state it's currently in, is not winnable anymore, and the Dutch entries reflect this. No-one gives a shit anymore. This year's entry is another low point. How low? Well, the Contest broadcast went to a cheap network that hired a cheap writer (Vader Abraham, from the Smurf song) to write a cheap song. You'll 'love' it.
@DieLaurenDie No, the answer is that the Netherlands is not a very musical nation. Even outside this competition there are very few great bands or singers from the Netherlands :/
@inspireradavstatyer I don't necessarily think that's true. Are you familiar with our music scene, or just the rare hit that goes beyond our borders? Sure, most of our TOP 40/MTV tracks suck, but that's the case everywhere nowadays. We have some of the most cutting edge music schools in Europe, and it shows in the number of fantastic bands and solo artists in the altérnative scene here. Not to mention a great deal of classically trained musicians have gone to play for international orchestras.
Damn 1998 was for me the year really hoping that the eurovision was going to Amsterdam 1999. I think this days it is really hard for Netherlands to win a eurovision. We have been now 6 six year not in the final. come on Europe. Give Netherlands a change. We will blow year heads to give the best festival ever.
@vimsegiraffen That's because most black female singers do have some of the most remarkable voices out there ... they let their voices speak for themselves with no need for jumping on stage, no need to shout "hey hey and opa opa" no need to dance and change outfits, no need to wear monster masks or get naked on stage with a terrible english accent ... they do what it all should be about: singing!
Sexy woman! And very nice of the BBC to pan to her parents in the audience. Overall, the 98 contest must be one of the greatest ESC ever! Well done all concerned!
I don't give to shits ... if you think u are going to convince me that I'm wrong or that I MUST like Dana's song I'm sorry u have a problem. Music taste ans Eurovision view are multiple and aren't to be discussed if u can't accept someone's different opinion. For me she killed the whole show negatively by winning and I'm not gonna bother to explain why ... these last ten year are more than enough evidence.
for your info - u idiot - I thght evrything APART FROM THE WINNER was perfect in 1998 . Dana was crap & i agree on Malta - so now fuck off with your bile
The next time you want somebody to explain their views MAKE IT CLEAR and not coming up with questions that make u look like a Dana International fan u're ashole!
It doesnt have one. The Dutch public are going to vote one of 8 or 9 singers. Those singers can change everything about the song, BUT the lyrics and the title.
Excellent performance. The song has energy and the singer is amazing. She is so beautiful and the nicest ever. Great voice, great choreography, and great music. She definitely made The Netherlands very proud! Adorable, adorable..... + 10!!!!! :)
she was hoarse and couldt hit the end note..what a shame...she normally does it like batting an eye! She probs sang it way too often before the contest!
She finished 4th, very undeservedly! This girl blows me away with her amazing voice and stage personality. Israel's winning song was somewhat interesting but Dana had a very weak voice. The Netherlands were definitely robbed that year!
1998 is the year that the netherlands must have win the ESC

should have ranked first or second, this and UK were very good that year.

it was really good but the dress did cost her the win!!!!
the problem was there were two modern song with lots of pop UK and NED
and there was the classic ballad from Malta and so the points were splitted and so Dana could win

She is a really good singer. Dutch always sound nice when they have coloured singers. hehe :)
And the live arrangement by Dick Bakker played by the BBC Concert Orchestra is just fantastic!
It's a good example of how exellent an orchestra can be used in a modern popsong.
