  • This bloody thing was the bane of my life when I was little ha ha

Transmission begins with emmerdale farm at three!! three p.m.!!!

  • @meab12 Then came Thema Mansfield and Derek Davis.

The age of ALL-DAY TV in Eire had begun!

  • I like the way the testcard tone fades into the Irish music.

  • @MarkAJAgi -- Ha!

Never thought of that! It DOES sound like a tone blending in with the music!

  • Kool Music =)

  • Makes me wanna get off my lazy arse an try to dance.

  • zajebista muzyka :D

  • bed early...

  • Someday the City won't shut down at night either.

  • English cities aren't as alive as you are led to believe once the sun sets.

They are stuffed full of vagrants, druggies and gnereal squaller!

  • @tubedougz dont freget the prostitutes "YEY I LOVE THE CLAP" dont talk shit about the city.wats a city slicker to a potatoe picker lol

  • @tubedougz the past is the past.

  • @boatmanzxc - Yet it shapes the future ...

  • @tubedougz I think if even Ian Paisley, can sign the good friday agreement with sinn fein and put the past behind them, then you can to. Years have past since Ireland was under British rule, don't blame a whole nation and it's population, for somethng the majority of people would now deplore and be disgusted by, don't blame a generation for its predessors.

  • @boatmanzxc What are you talking about - this is a test card vid!

  • still feck all on. mind you this is more entertaining than some of the shite rte have on.

  • I love the Irish twist on the 'F' word!

    Ha hahahhaha!

I haven't watched RTE for years, It seems to have become a kind of BBC/ITV clone.

It used to be a bit of a comedy of errors - but I loved it for its relaxed and informal nature.

Gay Byrne WAS The Late Late Show. I never enjoyed the work of his successor.

  • tubedougz

Don't take this the wrong way, but

you should label this as fake, as viewers might think that it is actually real.

Maybe you should do the same also for your BBC testcard attempts. There is no merit to these videos at all. All they do is confuse people.

  • Sorry

  • That show is actually a very good adaption from Color Bars with much wider array of characters and no censoring.

  • Is it now 24 hours? Or at least it starts in the morning?

  • Comment removed

  • It wasn't any time. This is a fake. Also RTE rarely played trad music during the testcard, so its not typical.

  • Ahh,that's how it should be no daytime tv/no breakfast tv with a mid to late afternoon start!

  • It beats Play TV

  • much better than the big band crap we had to put up with in england lol

  • classic

  • Pleased to have obliged Sir!

  • We used to have the annoying beep on ABC in Australia, then we upgraded to music. Now the TV station doesn't even close down for the night. That's how cool we are!!!

  • I remember it on most of the stations in Australia. It wasn't until the mid-late 80s that the ABC started 24hr broadcasting. Rage was the show on the weekends which started the whole 24hr broadcast.

  • yeah RTE doesnt close for the night anymore either :)

  • tvp 1 its a amazing testcard . This is no good ;( I'm write this in Poland ;)

  • Ah sweet sweet memories. Back before we had digital... RTE 1 & Network 2. What good friends they were...

  • I can't help but have a giggle - but this comment sounds like a dulcet comment made by one Mr Terrence Wogan!

  • i remember this, especially on christmas

  • i used to watch this in the mornings before the cartoons

  • Christ u were lucky to have music with your test card, all I got was a loud drilling beep!

  • /watch?v=0KXCOlUUZRY <---amazing new RTE drama

  • fuck off you malnourished prick

  • The irish got style

  • What's the name of this song? I'm in love with it...

  • It comes from Stockton's Wing. Their CD - The Very Best of Stockton's Wing is available to buy on various Irish Music websites.

    I hope this helps.

  • If you let me have your e-mail address - I may be able to e-mail you the song! You can then add it onto a CD!

  • Can you let me have your e-mail address again. I seem to have lost it.

The song is ready to send you.

  • what a gem

  • I pent nore time, wayching you than actual "tv"

    Nevertheless,i miss you!

  • i remember when RTE 2 (back then) would not start till about 17.00 OMG!!! how time have changhed i am 32, live at three the angelus, anything goes, sat morning, wanderly wagon, judge, i now laugh at what my parnets say those were the days....

  • why do we need testcards on you tube?

  • Why not?

  • I think the Irish are teaching the East Timorese how to build and run an Irish hospital , a reformatory school and a church that wants for eternal subsctiptions. Fianna Fail and Opus Dei know the secret of these things......! Would any sane person wish either on their worst enemy?

  • Carter usm had this as an album cover!

  • I remember this well, waiting for what seemed an eternity before Bosco and the Den came on.

    I'm only 23 and I feel old. :-(

  • 23!

    I'm jealous.

Crumbs yes! Bosco and Dempsey's Den. The RTE testcard also yielded Thelma Mansfield and Derek Davis for their afternoon's magazine show on RTE 1. Memories is all you have when you are old!

  • If you want to know anything about RTE, write to the Vatican. RTE is the most devoted national broadcasting station to the will and welfare of the Roman Catholic Faith triumphant in Ireland and around the world. East Timore now has a special place in its constitution to Catholicism and our Fianna Fail Minister Ahern has offered them a version of our Angelus to keep the people on their knees.

  • Its East Timor.

See you're still spamming everything Irish. As someone once said about you "Its clear your shrink isn't a catholic". lol.

  • The Indonesians have nothing on those tolling bells!

  • Err - see below.

  • Your point being!?You'd prefer godless anarchy!?

  • Since you haven't descended -- as yet -- into personal abuse (so common with your countrymen), let me say that there is no such thing , socially speaking, as 'godless anarchy'. If you want to talk about anarchists, you had better be prepared to talk Proudhon, etc., if you want godlessness, then talk Carotta and Atwill. All are honourable company, if you don't live in a pulpit!

  • what the fuck is a testcard and what was it used for please tell me

  • Google it! More your style.

  • I used to live in an area of Gwynedd, Wales that could clearly receive both RTE channels from the UHF transmitter on 3 Rock Mountain in Wicklow. I always remember back in the early 90s, RTE1's daytime test card G transmission was always accompanied on audio with RTE Radio 1 (rest in peace 567khz) and Network 2 (as it was called then) by, rather appropriately 2fm.

  • What The F..k. ? is this an early form of RIVERDANCE?

  • Riverdance is (was) shite!

  • huh? wat yr is that from?

  • Phone Protec?

  • By the way - who the fuk are you having this debate with?

  • fuck you

  • If your "the defenders of the peace" what do you do in an area that's communist???

  • That's why De Valera wanted to make Michael Collins look like a fool for signing away the North, because he didn't believe there's a God and Michael Collins did? That's probably why the Catholic church lost it's grip on Ireland because it started to deteriorate towards the Devil?

  • DeValera was a communist that's why he was talking to Hitler during WW2-Hitler was too that's why he had a partnership with Stalin. The Pope's teenage years were marred by a regime that didn't believe there's a God-communist.

  • What a load of bollocks!

First of all Hitler was NOT Communist.

Before you pass remarks of this nature - you should read up on your history. There's a grave danger that you'll appear to be 'thick' otherwise!

  • kevin: All the times I watched the test card and never saw that.

  • One of RTE's best shows.

  • So did you make this yourself from a generator or was it from an original tape?

  • No generator.

I downloaded a poor quality screen shot from the Internet and used my photosuite to enhance the image. I then used Windows Movie Maker to add the music tracks. Test Card complete!

If you look at YouTube test cards made from old VCR tapes, the quality isn't as good as this recreated example.

I have attempted to make it as correct as possible!

  • God, they'll put anything on youtube.

  • me lika the ashlee simpson

  • god this takes me back to when i was a kid . thanks for reminding me .

  • Great testcard. Looks much like the Danish ones (except for the RTE ofcourse). What kind of font did you use for the RTE?

  • I think that was 'Arial'...

  • The device which generates this is made by Phillips- many TV stations use the same test card generator.

  • Aye, my parents are Irish, and I was born there too. Visit my homeland quite frequently I do.

Thanks for the upload, always good to hear some of my native music..:)

  • that blows all nostalgia out the window so it does, the boredom of my childhood is reaffirmed, another two hours till emmerdale!

  • Ahh come on now,if anything it brings n=back memories for me,the good old days,

  • thank you for posting :)

  • You're welcome, Sir or Madam (Tits!)

  • You might like to see the 1960s RTE National Anthum I posted.

    Radiofones.

  • Thanks - I really enjoyed that. Great posting!

  • didn't South Africa use the same card?

  • Minus the diddley-dee Irish folk, quite likely. The Philips Test Card was defaultly used all over the world. Either that or the famous BBC Test Card F, featuring Carole Hersee. Check out more of my Test Cards by visiting my YouTube account!

  • Well done. Very nice reproduction.

  • Glad you enjoyed! Thank-you!

  • I put up a simple smpte pattern with simulated noise so I would have a user icon. lol I like yours much better

  • No - I made this one using my computer. I downloaded a poor quality screen-shot and used my Photosuite to enhance it. The music is off a Stockton's Wing CD. Fair cop!

  • Was this an actual recording of the RTE testcard, or was it just a series of stills put together, cos it seems like the quality is too high for it to be coming from VHS ^^

  • Brings backs so many memories.

Thanks for posting this wee bit of tv history.

  • That'a a really nice comment and much appreciated!

  • This is so funny. I can't believe somebody put this up on youtube. Nice one.

  • You have to admit - it's cool!

  • It is cool.

  • I recognise the first piece of music behind this test card...It is the Irish folk group STOCKTON'S WING with a track called 'The Trip to London'. Will check out name of second track (if I have it) and come back to you. Yes, there are a few TV anoraks out there as well. Ciao!!

  • I think the second track is called The Cameron Highlander.

  • hahaha brilliant, can believe someone put that up

  • damn catholics

  • damn trainspotters.

  • oi, I'm not a trainspotter, I'm a railway enthusiast

  • LMAO. Touche! :)

  • Ay!!! Laddie! Scottish Music, Love it!!! : )

  • Irish :)

  • Brilliant. I like from 2-4 mins the best, I must say.

  • why am i waching this

  • Because you like it!

  • if you, like me are brored out of your mind and watching it to kill time.

  • Bored! Me!.... Yes, you're right!

  • Erm - you won't be able to see ANYTHING on a faffed TV! Ha! Know what you mean though!

  • ahh, wish they had this now on uktv when thats not on, instead of a boring black screen, how are we supposed to know if the TVs broken or not???

  • DAMN YOU TESTCARD. i spent about 3 hours a day watchin dis thing, waiting for the cartoons to come on

  • Jaysus! Dat's a fekkin dangerous ting entirely. Sure, I know a guy who use to watch de carrrtoon on de aul RTE and he ended up mad about fekkin football - which is only ting in loyf dat's worse than the carrtoons on aul RTE and Bosco! Holly muther O'God!

  • f*ck, i remember that well!! seems pretty prehistoric now;-)

  • Great stuff! Now, can you make me five again as well?

  • Five? Did they have a testcard?

  • I meant 5 years old ;-)

  • Pat Kenny was even crap when it came to Eurovision. Imagine putting PAT KENNY instead of GAYE BYRNE?? Beggars belief!

  • pat kenny makes me want to vomit

  • LMAO well you have a point..... RTE was pretty sad,

  • Gaye Byrne's Late Late Show was ACE. It's crap without him. Glenroe was cool. They showed DALLAS well ahead of the BBC. American stuff aired on RTE far before it did in the UK. RTE had it's good points really.

  • all I can say is i'm missing home.

    Greetings from Maine

  • Ohh dear. There aren't that many parts of Ireland that I haven't visited at some point or other. I can imagine that someone could miss Ireland but if you like your telly - would you miss RTE?

  • No idea to be honest with you.

  • Say, whatever did happen to Iris Jones. We never saw her again after Teledu Cymru was taken over by Harlech?

  • AH! memories! Im not sure why one test card would make me feel so gloriously nostalgic, BUT IT DOES. thanks a lot for uploading this.

  • What a nice comment - thank you. I live on the westernmost coast of North Wales, a place surrounded by hills and mountains. This geology and gerography meant that on occasion, the only TV channels that we could receive with any degree of clarity was RTE 1 & 2. The pictures zoomed accross the Irish Sea from Wicklow's Kippure transmitter on an undisturbed trek to my specially erected RTE aerial. Memories indeed!

  • kronamalasa again. north Wales you say. We got Teledu Cymru from Noth Wales in Dublin. I was always delighted when Iris Jones would say "Nos Dah da boche" and add "Oiche Mhait". I kinda felt she was talking right to me. She and Ivor Roberts were great continuity announcers.

  • Gosh - that's really going back a bit!

  • A bit?

  • OK - A LOT! HA!

  • great test card love it very much

  • I'm watching this in Spain on St. Patrick's Day. I'm crying

  • Yes - I get emotional when I see a test card too. I get a lot of comments relating the testcards to better days - of olde. I guess we were all younger then, so they were bound to be better days really. I wonder if bringing testcards back would revitalise any of us?

  • Yea yea I remember this, and also the clock. The BBC one is creepy looking now with the girl and the puppet lol

  • I had a tremendous crush on that girl when I was a kid! I used to kiss her monochrosme face on my Dad's ITT KB dual band TV - I loved the smell of hot bakelite! Bet it's more cellulite these days?!

  • at lest thers music and not some scary bitch

  • I remember even as late as 1996 that feckin test card would be on the screen on Network 2 until about lunch time on weekends. They'd just put 2FM on for the audio.

  • I just love the Irish variation on the over used "F" expletive! Larry Gogan on the Test Card - COOL! Larry and Gerry Ryan are the best radio presenters anywhgere on Earth. You Irish are truly blessed! Erm... naturally..I remember that too - coupled with pages from AERTEL!

  • hahahaha memories, waiting for the shows to come on

  • fucking hell.. stocktons wing, my dad is the fiddler for them

  • Ah, the good old days when we had no money, condoms were illegal and the Irish rugby team was crap... i hate that didley i music

  • The only people in Eire that had condoms were the Phoenix Park Cycling Club - they cleverly disguised condoms as puncture repair kits! Good days for me though, I travelled from Belfast with a boot full of condoms - sold them in Dublin for huge profit.

Then I travelled back North with a boot laden with Pochin - selling it in Belfast for huge profits. Vive the diddley-dee music and the old RTE test card! Glory days...

  • lmao genius

  • Can't say I remember that one! Was it Thelma beating him up - if so - was it MEANT to abe broadcast on dear old RTE?

  • anyone have derek davis being beaten up live on set?

    do ye remember that?

  • Yes indeed, R.T.E. was soooo cool when we was young uns. Still having said that, R.T.E. still kicks ass when see the shite that ITV has become.

  • Thanks Snifferdog. Ahh yes BOSCO in his BOSCA with a presenter called Grania Ui Mahitu (forgive the appalling spelling. We had Ian Dempsey on Dempsey's Den with Zig & Zag. And of course that ray of sunshine lurking behind the Friday Testcard was Gay Byrne's MAGIC Late Late Show. What ever happened to proper TV broadcasting?...

  • This is a blast from the past. I remember as a kid waiting impatiently for the clock to appear and signal the imminent arrival of Bosco.

  • BOSCO! What a ledge

  • lol ha gr8 mstuff the dayz wen emmerdale woz called emmerdale farm!

  • Do ya remember the clock that used to be on before Anything Goes on a saturday morning??

  • nice one, that said, wayyyy to much time on your hands ;)

  • p45roG - HA! I like your comment - and - isn't it funny - you'r not the ONLY one to suggest that I have too much 'leisure' time on my hands. Good harmless fun though. RTE had to make a programme called "The Pure Drop" to fill the folk music vaccum that the testcard sequences left behind!

  • When exactly was this broadcast from?

  • What date is this broadcast from? Would it be the late 70s by any chance?

  • This one is a re-creation that I have put together. I even made the testcard on my Photosuite system - enhanced from a downloaded testcard picture. I am going to put another testcard online which will depict shabby 405 VHF testcards from the 70's. this type was broadcast in the late 70 and right through into the 80's before Thelma Mansfield, Derek Davis, Bosco and Aertel started to infiltrate RTE testcard territory!

  • i remember that from the 80's early 90's

  • early 90s really?

  • yes, really!

  • Oh yes! Glory days indeed. And not an evil eyed child or scary clown in sight. God, I miss this testcard so much.

  • Ha!! I like your comment. If you look into some of my other videos - you'll get to see the evil gonk as well as the scary child! You'll have to ask yourself - what is REALLY the best thing - a testcard (which is of some use at least) or poor quality afternoon TV laced with repeats? . . .
