3000 Archers shooting at you is a lot and fucked up if you are the infantry. But imagine if you were a Takeda Calvary getting shot at by 3000 of Nobunaga's Samurai Arquebusiers in the Battle of Nagashino. It was the new age of warfare had truly begun for the Samurai. The Takeda Famed Calvary got Annihilated. History is interesting but playing it is even better.

if in the campaign you need to win such battles, hold the spartans back and let them get shot at

if you rushforward they will be able to hit you in the side and rear from short range

while at long range they will miss more and you keep the shield bonus

eventualy they run out of arrows and you can butcher them

In 1821, during the Greek Revolution against the bloody Ottoman Empire, a small band of 118 rebels led by chieftain Oddyseas Androutsos barricaded themselves in a .... road inn (a kind of motel, imagine something like a mafia's boss spanish hacienda kind of style) so as to stop an advancing army of 8000 infantry, 1000 cavalry and canons (luckily canons arriving the following day).

And guess who won...

Androutsos had the Inn, Miltiades the marshlands and the Spartans had the steep mountain passages to "even" the fight..in the video what we see is an idiot slowly marching his 161 melee troops a mile through flatland against 3.3k archers. No cover, no strategy...just walking to their deaths.

@daweed420 Google "Battle of Gravia Inn" to get the details... the turkish general had to cancel off the whole campaign after that. more than 300 Turks layed dead (anything from 300 to 500) and more than 800 were seriously wounded (about half of them probably died later). The losses of Greeks were only 6 men, the rest escaping the siege through the enemy ranks in the night!!!!!

So yes... why not put 161 Greeks against 1000s of enemies? It has happened numerous times in Greek history.
