I remember when I was a kid, half the fun of getting ice cream was chasing the truck with friends and yelling out through the neighborhood to the other kids inside their homes "Ice cream truck is here!"
Now kids go to the store open a freezer, get whatever, say to their parents "I want this one.", go back to the car, sit on their butt eat and nag on how the ice cream tastes.
I saw a "Mr.Softee"vendor this evening in my neghiborhood..the kids bought his treats. It's nice to know that a former part of my boyhood in NYC was here.
the best ice cream EVER. even my high school has their own Mister Softee truck! ahh memories... there's also two of them on Flushing Meadows Park. i often see them in my area
ya it was kool for me too...but the big fun as a kid ,,, was the BUGBOMB truck,,,yumm maybe thats why i the way i am now running in the smoke from the BUGBOMB...DDT
I love Mr. Softee! I live near alot of kids so its a.. OMFG I HEAR THE JINGLE RIGHT NOW! XD no joke! During the day the moment you hear the jingle you can hear down the block " ICE CREAAAAAAAMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! " and you'll see a rush of Kids running down the block. :3 i love Mr. Softee,
Wow..just hearing that Mr. Softee jingle again had me drooling like Pavlov's dog lol!! That is the sound of every CHILDHOOD SUMMER I EVAH EXPERIENCED!! Banana boat (with chocolate sprinkles) FTW!!!!
The creamiest, dreamiest soft ice cream, You get from Mister Softee. For a refreshing delight supreme, Look for Mister Softee. My milkshakes and my sundaes and my cones are such a treat, Listen for my store on wheels, ding-a-ling down the street. The creamiest, dreamiest soft ice cream, You get from Mister Softee. For a refreshing delight supreme, Look for Mister Softee. S-O-F-T Double 'E', Mister Softee
Good call!! My guess is that the vehicle would have been pledged for use in time of emergency, as any refrigerated transport would have been seen as highly beneficial. Don't forget these were the days when some of the precautions and contingency plans made for armageddon bordered on what we would find comical now but were based on a best measures analysis then.
@tatertotter808 wth happened to the real ice cream trucks of those days I was fortunate enough to have that old Mr Softee experience with some local truck that still runs around here
The past was definately a better time than the present, and it's not wishful thinking. It's a fact. The world sucks now. I pray for Armageddon everyday.
I have to "ditto" what KissHope said. Thank you for bringing back that sweet sweet memory. I, too, had forgotten how beautiful our Mister Softee truck was on a summer evening...I loved Mister Softee vanilla cones in the early 1960s. Mister Softee made the very best ice cream. (Check out Mister Softee's website.)
YES, VERY GOOD, and thier still around. The ice cream would melt fast while eating it. not like the crap soybean icecream others sell. Dairy Barn isnt even close to Mr Softie, Cravel is the closest to the texture and taste.
Night time was the best, that magical truck all lit up at night. You could hear it from blocks away, and had plenty of time to get money. 1960's i got first double cone with chocolate and vanilla and sprinkles, it was huge! And then go home to watch The ed sullivan show.
I love mr softee. the anticipation of licking the soft vanilla ice cream as you stand on the edge of the curb staring down the street and seeing the mr softee van at a distance feels great. and the taste and finally getting the ice cream is even better
One of the fondest memories as a young boy was waiting in anticipation to hear the Mr. Softy jingle coming through the neighborhood from a distance. Standing on the edge of the curb holding a fist full of change listening to the sound of the jingle getting louder and louder as it approached my street , And finally seeing that blue and white Boyertown step van with the big plastic statue of Mr. Softy mounted to the top of the front roof of the truck turning down my street.
One of my earlies memories of growing up in Jackson Heights in the early 60s is that song and eating a chocolate/chocolate dip cone. 40 odd years later and it still tastes exactly the same!
