i guess the ITFandWTF IS THE SAME BECAUSE I THINK ITF WAS LEARNED BY GENERAL MASTER CHOI HONG HI AND WTF WAS JUST LIKE THE SAME AS ITF AND ITS JUST EVOVLED AS YOU CAN SEE RIGHT NOW SOMEONE IS DOING 2V2 SPARRING IN WTF. I WISH IM RIGHT =)
WTF was created by the government. They exiled Gen Choi and he took the original TKD and the ITF with him, so they created there own with what was left over after he left for Canada. The government was not happy that he shared it with the world. And thats why its so different from ITF. This all happened in the 70s.
@Fingyfin Choi defected to North Korea. He was a traitor. Most Koreans are greedy and stupid that way we have so many TKD federations. I knew Choi and Park personally.
@Fingyfin I see that you are from Australia and I am from USA and I see that we are on the same page. To our standards Choi was a traitor who escaped to North Korea without worrying about the future of Tae Kwon Do. He found a sweet spot in Canada to open his corporation. W/o Young Park Tae Choi would be nobody. I have met them several times in Poland where I was born and raised. Choi had a great future and the spot in history without defecting to Communists. I wish we had only one TKD fed.
@grzgs1 30 years ago as I remember Gen. Choi was a little unhappy guy and a poster boy for ITF was his right hand man Master Young Park Tae. He was the man who made the biggest impression on me. I do not blame him that he left this little traitor Choi, who was using him all those years and open his own corporation GTF.
Both feds over the years have done nothing but diminish the strong climb TKD had. Its pointless to bicker or debate the diffs, their pretty much the same. It depended on the school and where teacher was from. Plenty of Wtf taught all the forms from both sides and didn't just focus hard on sports versions. (lots did tho) This is why Wtf controlled most the international comps (sports wise) either way both sides have had major corruption over the years; to the point Tkd can b kicked from Olympics
I currently train with Mrs Carol van Zile, under Master Robert Wheatley, who trains under Master Choi Jung Hwa, the General's son. The current direction, at their insistence, is to bring the art and the power back to TaeKwon Do. WTF, GTF, Olympic TaeKwon Do are all parts of TKD but not the art as a whole. You can use TKD for many purposes and in many ways, but if someone starts changing parts of it because they don't like or don't understand it, then it ceases to be TaeKwon Do. Teach to learn.
I heard Wheatley is a pretty good Master! I train under Master Moore in Aus. But we moved from GM Choi Jung Hwa to GM Hwang Kwang Sung, who was the Generals right hand man before the split. All ITFs seem to be the same, any WTF who comes to our classes dose not seem to understand any of it, they dont even learn theory.
at the end of the day this great man gave us taekwondo that is both itf and wtf as he said " here i leave taekwondo for mankind. as a trace of a man of the 20th century. the twenty four patterns represent twenty four hours, one day or all my life". both types of tkd have both good and bad intentions it is down to the person not the style

@scarred10 A student should never be embarrassed over loyalty to an art or an instructor. A few very fortunate students start with an art and instructor that fits them, and that they are suited for. A good student will eventually realize they need to move on. A good instructor will realize this before the student becomes aware of it. I've been training for 20 years, and am with my third instructor. The first two eventually showed personal and ethical failings, and were just so-so instructors.
@1mgorsha the art is a joke in terms of effectiveness, wouldnt matter who taught it,there were 2 coaches in the club, one completely useless and another very good within the syllabus of tkd,but since he had to stick to the itf cirriculum it was still very poor.I guess youre not interested in whether it works under pressure or not.I i enjoy tkd until I got hammered to a pulp by real fighters, then i felt like an imposter.I improved 100% in the next year of crosstraining and then quit tkd for good.

@scarred10 Very limited effectiveness for someone like you. Your problem is you trained for competition. Sport training is for sport. @TKDPagn itf was first than taekwondo and they arent opposites. wtf taekwondo its like a sport and itf taekwondo is the martial art. wtf its the olimpic sport and itf has the world tournament... basically thats the difference.
@TKDPagn WTF is becoming the most popular federation because of the possibility to participate to olympic games, I'm an ITF adept and I don't see much difference between both feds and I don't think one is better than the other. Master Trân Long tried to unite those 2 federation but sadly he died in haiti in the earthquake.
i dont mean to sound like a cunt but wasnt taekwondo already around since the 7th century ? he might not have created it but he certainly modernized it and spread it around
Not to be disrespectful but Ive been study the history of martial arts and it seems that General Choi only became GM of TKD he was a general in the army. Not because he trained for years and earned it. He was only a 1st dan in Shotokan!!!
@Kinghercules yes my friend he earned 1st dan in shotokan in japan when 1st dan means a very high level in shotokan, and he earned grade of general because he was the lider of a movement to win independence of his country.
@Kinghercules he´s Corean, are you telling me that japanese people are going to travel to Corea to join the ITF?, even worst he travel to Canada with his masters and developed more the tecnique and power of Taekwondo, Japanese people doesnt know him. He was in jail cause he was the leader of independence, or do you thing that he proclamed himself like the new General of Corea?, he is an hero in his Country, and Taekwondo ITF is the most powerfull martial art in the world.
@Kinghercules one problem, in any ITF system, Gen Choi Hong Hi is a Grandmaster. prior to 1966, there was no ITF and those that were awarded/graded/earned the promotion to GM have been there since the beginning eg. First Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha, Grandmaster Park Jong Soo, Grandmaster Choi Jung Hwa. i have met the three great men mentioned above and they are true Grandmasters in Taekwon-Do....
@Kinghercules the outlook by most is yes he may not have graded in TKD, how could/who could grade the founder and creator of the art? but like most arts created, how does the person in charge/creator maintain the art unless they take the top position? pointless promoting several men and women to master and grandmaster level if you see yourself below the top ranking black belt? no matter, Gen Choi Hong Hi gave the world Taekwon-Do, ITF, WTF, ATA, GTF, UITF, ITA....... it starts with one creation
Are you serious? Choi wasnt the only one that came up with the name Taekwondo. TKD came out of Tang Soo DO, Ji Do Kwon, Moo Duk Kwon...and the other kwons that were around. Choi did create the ITF only cause his ass got kicked out of the KTA when he went to N Korea. He created all the forms for ITF (which are BS forms). He had nothing to do with the WTF (another BS association).
@Kinghercules lol you have it wrong in some parts.. yep he came up with taekwondo using several elements of karate, taekyong and other arts but he did not create BS federations, or lame forms... he perfected the art and if you can't understand what it means you just don't get what martial arts are at all..
@feder459 -that is correct my friend. I also had the blessing of testing for 1st Gup in front of Grandmaster Park Jung Tae. Very inspirational -and WOW was that guy amazing in his technique and flying kicks, a true pioneer.
General Choi Hong Hi, founded TaeKwon Do by combining elements from the Korean kicking martial art Taekyon and Japanese Karate. He developed this during his time in the military. He then taught TaeKwon Do to the Korean Army and founded ITF.
there are alot of elements of taekyon,in wtf style kicks also, its best to combine wtf and itf, its the same fucking style, different competing rules!
@kobayashimaruaikiken He only was a balck belt in karate. And If you compare tae kwon do and karate, there are not similarities. :S Maybe you shoud study more before commente, And a question karate was made by magic? Karate was made in Korea¡¡¡ Please read, look for information¡¡¡¡
@feder459 what nonsense is this ? karate from korea ???
karate was introduced first in the town of naha on okinawa, and was at first called naha-te. the founder Higaonna Kanryo had studied kung fu in china, and opened his own school in naha. later on the name has been changed to goju ryu, which is the oldest style of karate, most asian martial art can be traced back to ancient chinese martial art.
This man should be remembered as the father of the True Taekwon-do. The WTF has claimed al rights to the invention of TKD. Everyone should no who really created this awsome art.
1.21min that 1 is GTF grand master Park Jung Tae, he is grand master Choi Hong Hi's student too, he also dead at 2003...he leave from ITF because grand master Choi Hong Hi dead, he don want to participate to dispute who be a grand master, and he only want to spread TKD to any place, so he leave and establish GTF tkd..
Yeah he is! It was officially created in 1955 in the military by General Choi, he developed it from Karate and an ancient Korean foot fighting martial art called Tae Kyon, its very modern in the sense that it has developed into its full over all theses years.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
its been developed through the korean families (kinda like the mafia) and taekwondo is one method by one of the families , other families have named thier own brands such as, i did tagb style for ages and learned loads of history (e.g Hwarang) Soo Bahk Do, Kwon Bop, Kong Soo Do, Tae Soo Do and Kang Soo Do. are some of the other names for basically the same martial art.
well....when you're as good as me at taekwondo as me, they'll teach you how to do it. nah i'm just kidding i dont know, my FB is acting up a bit too....

@Kinghercules lol you have it wrong in some parts.. yep he came up with taekwondo using several elements of karate, taekyong and other arts but he did not create BS federations, or lame forms... he perfected the art and if you can't understand what it means you just don't get what martial arts are at all..

General Choi Hong Hi, founded TaeKwon Do by combining elements from the Korean kicking martial art Taekyon and Japanese Karate. He developed this during his time in the military. He then taught TaeKwon Do to the Korean Army and founded ITF.
WTF crawled out of a turd.
Evolutionrunbackward 2 years ago 23

@kobayashimaruaikiken He only was a balck belt in karate. And If you compare tae kwon do and karate, there are not similarities. :S Maybe you shoud study more before commente, And a question karate was made by magic? Karate was made in Korea¡¡¡ Please read, look for information¡¡¡¡
feder459 3 months ago
@feder459 I've studied enough to recognise a lot of biomechanical nonsense, thanks...
kobayashimaruaikiken 3 months ago
@feder459 what nonsense is this ? karate from korea ???
karate was introduced first in the town of naha on okinawa, and was at first called naha-te. the founder Higaonna Kanryo had studied kung fu in china, and opened his own school in naha. later on the name has been changed to goju ryu, which is the oldest style of karate, most asian martial art can be traced back to ancient chinese martial art.

Okay, is this guy like the founder of Tae Kwon Do or something? I always thought TKD was several hundred or even a couple of thousand years old.
jreily88 2 years ago
Yeah he is! It was officially created in 1955 in the military by General Choi, he developed it from Karate and an ancient Korean foot fighting martial art called Tae Kyon, its very modern in the sense that it has developed into its full over all theses years.
eoinb57 2 years ago 4
This comment has received too many negative votes show
its been developed through the korean families (kinda like the mafia) and taekwondo is one method by one of the families , other families have named thier own brands such as, i did tagb style for ages and learned loads of history (e.g Hwarang) Soo Bahk Do, Kwon Bop, Kong Soo Do, Tae Soo Do and Kang Soo Do. are some of the other names for basically the same martial art.
