  • great

  • Takin' notes....

  • He melted that one!

  • pete mccan is very underated also wayne krantz

  • he have the most creative style

  • "at this time one of the three best guitarist"...so what about Kurt Rosenwinkel. Lage lund. Mike Moreno: Jonathan Kreisberg. Adam Roger etc.etc.etc.

  • I think Rosenwinkel can be added to that list but probably not many other guys...yet. "The Next Step" really changed everything, many players are just working from that at the moment, both tonally and conceptually.

But when you talk about Scofield, Metheny and Frisell their reputation is based on the consistency of projects and clear individual voices. Kurt could be seen as hit and miss still with his projects.

  • @lugk14 I think that claim is pretty old really, just carried over into the past couple decades from like the 80's. those guys are post "the big three"

  • Scofield's so good, he bends the entire guitar along with the string...?

  • Then he plays left handed,.... brilliant!

  • lol nice effects

if the world is melting, then surely my face must be

  • not a good statement that scofield matheny and frizzel are considered to be the greatest of all time? by who? I never heard that before,

  • "at this time" it says...their often considered the big three of the modern age of jazz guitarists...thats a writeup often put on any description of scofield...there are alot of greats out there of all time....but he is incredible! Big fan

  • such a Gr8 job you did of liquefying!=}

    TFP!

  • I listened to Langrene trio. A real cook house! I however must point out that Scofield, Methaney, and frizzel are perhaps the most imitated jazz guitar players of our time. To me originality is the highest form of art. Also the most difficult. Think of it.

  • the trumpet kills me

  • Scofield Frisell Metheny??? No offense but Lagrene, Rosenberg, and Debarre are well beyond those three.

  • Really... who decides those "ranking" things?

  • It's all subjective but some players are obviously in a class above others. I was responding to the info about this clip where the person who posted it proclaimed three players to be the "greatest of our time". Those three may have sold more albums and they may be more popular among the masses but they are not better.

  • and they sure as hell are not worse. Frisell, Metheny, Scofield- it's tough to say anybody's above those three.

  • I think in the mid-80's, they were the three most prominent young jazz guitarists, and they each had individual approaches. I've also heard people include Mike Stern, who appeared around that time, too. They were thought to be carrying the torch of the last generation who were getting older. I don't think it was meant to put down any other players, just to promote those players who were keeping the tradition alive.

  • based on?

  • Go listen to Scofield, Frisell, and Metheny. Then checkout Lagrene, Debarre, and Rosenberg. It will be very obvious.

  • good old john scofield!!

  • HE PLAY WITH MILES !!!!

  • stoned??

  • AWESOME and The Jazz Festivals in Malaga are some of the best

  • ammazza

  • how old is he?

  • 59 I think.

  • Sco stays creative year after year!!!

  • house of the rising sun?

  • indeed

  • amazing!

  • Ok good. But it´s not a trio.

  • It was billed as the John Scofield Trio with horns - the horn players didn't really solo, they just added colour during the heads.

  • try these albums too:

    a go go

    quiet

    grace under pressure

    uberjam

    the music of ray charles

    groove elation

medeski scofield martin and wood - out louder

  • Correction: 4) is F/G - G#7#5

  • The harmony is 1) Ami - C7#11 - D7 - F7 2) Ami- E7- Ami 3) Ami11, D11, F11 (climb up riff) and 4) G7, G#7

The reason it might sound "out of tune" in some parts is because of the way Scofield likes to voice his dominant chords with a minor second interval (b9)eg, C7= Bb (b7th), A (6th), G (5th)- (0:22).

  • im genuinely confused as to why my posts appear in that order

  • Swallow owes me five bucks.

  • That neck has more bow than I expected...:)

  • I liked it and did not think he was out of tune.

Thats just the way he plays. I have seen him in Toronto and he was good.

  • Annoying visual effects. Looks like some kid got hold of the "distort" button on Photoshop. I saw Scofield at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz CA 1989. Brilliant! Good to see he's still got the chops.

  • Yeah Phil!

  • I agree. Bits of his playing are technically out of tune. The question is whether this serves any artistic purpose.

  • Definitely does, no doubt. Like what hofner20 said, theyre complex harmonies

  • out of tune? you just can't hear complex harmonies

  • out of tune...wheres the roflcopter at?!?!. This guy would pwn you any day of the week i am quite sure. With his "out of tune" awesome sounding guitar.

  • If you like this look up a guitarist called James Muller. He's Amazing!!!

  • in response to the out of tune comment. Think of him as putting a bluesy feel into his thing. Try to accept things for what they are and listen closer. He is a world renowned player.

  • Obviously,I can´t deny his prowess,but I don´t like his musical approach,and that´s all

  • how can you not? what kind of guitarists do you like? his tunes are cool to listen and dance to.

  • yes! scofield is very danceable, something you don't find in a lot of guitarists

  • sounds pretty in tune to me. I don't know what your talking about

  • Please post a video of yourself playing "in tune", maestro.

  • Ur an idiot if you think he's out of tune

  • i would tend to agree with that. If you actually listen to his phrases, every note is consistent with the phrase. Its his attitude man, hes a rough motherfucker.

  • i hope your just being sarcastic

  • how dare you

  • awesome effects! Thanks!

  • otro grande scofield maestro

  • Very silly effects, but great playing!

  • I love it when he plays left-handed!
