I think Rosenwinkel can be added to that list but probably not many other guys...yet. "The Next Step" really changed everything, many players are just working from that at the moment, both tonally and conceptually.
But when you talk about Scofield, Metheny and Frisell their reputation is based on the consistency of projects and clear individual voices. Kurt could be seen as hit and miss still with his projects.
@lugk14 I think that claim is pretty old really, just carried over into the past couple decades from like the 80's. those guys are post "the big three"
Fantabulous!! Masterpiece.. Glad that I've lent my ears to this song and glad that i've downloaded the entire album for free at DownloadMusic/./im , remove the slashes..
"at this time" it says...their often considered the big three of the modern age of jazz guitarists...thats a writeup often put on any description of scofield...there are alot of greats out there of all time....but he is incredible! Big fan
I listened to Langrene trio. A real cook house! I however must point out that Scofield, Methaney, and frizzel are perhaps the most imitated jazz guitar players of our time. To me originality is the highest form of art. Also the most difficult. Think of it.
It's all subjective but some players are obviously in a class above others. I was responding to the info about this clip where the person who posted it proclaimed three players to be the "greatest of our time". Those three may have sold more albums and they may be more popular among the masses but they are not better.
I think in the mid-80's, they were the three most prominent young jazz guitarists, and they each had individual approaches. I've also heard people include Mike Stern, who appeared around that time, too. They were thought to be carrying the torch of the last generation who were getting older. I don't think it was meant to put down any other players, just to promote those players who were keeping the tradition alive.
The harmony is 1) Ami - C7#11 - D7 - F7 2) Ami- E7- Ami 3) Ami11, D11, F11 (climb up riff) and 4) G7, G#7
The reason it might sound "out of tune" in some parts is because of the way Scofield likes to voice his dominant chords with a minor second interval (b9)eg, C7= Bb (b7th), A (6th), G (5th)- (0:22).
Annoying visual effects. Looks like some kid got hold of the "distort" button on Photoshop. I saw Scofield at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz CA 1989. Brilliant! Good to see he's still got the chops.
out of tune...wheres the roflcopter at?!?!. This guy would pwn you any day of the week i am quite sure. With his "out of tune" awesome sounding guitar.
in response to the out of tune comment. Think of him as putting a bluesy feel into his thing. Try to accept things for what they are and listen closer. He is a world renowned player.
i would tend to agree with that. If you actually listen to his phrases, every note is consistent with the phrase. Its his attitude man, hes a rough motherfucker.

and they sure as hell are not worse. Frisell, Metheny, Scofield- it's tough to say anybody's above those three.

Go listen to Scofield, Frisell, and Metheny. Then checkout Lagrene, Debarre, and Rosenberg. It will be very obvious.

It was billed as the John Scofield Trio with horns - the horn players didn't really solo, they just added colour during the heads.

I agree. Bits of his playing are technically out of tune. The question is whether this serves any artistic purpose.
swinburne1000 4 years ago
Definitely does, no doubt. Like what hofner20 said, theyre complex harmonies
djcuvcuv112 3 years ago
out of tune? you just can't hear complex harmonies
