i didn't think the big one was going to go during the beginning, because it was pretty still, so there should have been very little heat being built up inside. i mean, if you were to hold it perfectly still, the liquid should go down by itself without cooling.

how does this work?

These birds uses pressure difference. In the birds is a liquids the has much gas coming off, and when that gas goes to head the damp head works as a cooler. That cooler uses that gas and creates a negative pressure. That make less pressure in the head causing the liquid up in the head. Once bird bows the inner tube is cleared, and pressure is equallized. Process begins again.
