There's something funny going on in the last spin.. There's a slight skip in the video.. Makes the quad spin look fake.. But why would anyone fake balet-spins? =|
Turning in pointe shoes is so much easier because you are forced to lift off your torso simply to get on pointe. Plus the shoes are nice and slick. =D
those were jazz pirouettes actually. male and female dancers are better at different things. generally speaking, in the classical world, men are better turners and jumpers.
I find that it is all about spotting and arms. I find that if I get my eyes back on the spot place after turning, I can rebalance. Also, bringing arms really in and low seems to help me to keep composed. And as I did a few triples both on pointe AND in soft shoes, it makes me an expert! hihi :o)))
Just asking for opinion. Do you all think wearing soft shoes to turn more than one piroutte is easier or wearing pointe shoes? As I always have difficulty turning in soft shoes! PLEASE REPLY!
I think its best to learn how to do more than one in soft shoes before you try pointes, but I definately find wearing pointes easier, keep your centre, spot well, and use your arms as a 'frame' to balance you.
@nxer Im a guy so dont really know but .... Yes initially (like as a child) but once on pointe I would say the technique is subtly different and that needs to be learnt (eg it's more difficult to releve and also there's less friction*). So it's better to practise in pointe shows than in flat / soft blocks.
*this actually means once you've got the hang of spinning on pointe, it is easier to do more turns on pointe than in flat! lol.
alot of people do pirouettes from a straight back knee in 4th, and alot of people bring their arms in. Thats how you do pirouettes in the BAlanchine technique. With only 1 knee bent you can actually do more turns and the arms are taught that way for patnering. It's been scientifically proven that that way is more effcient for pirouettes. and actually on a couple of them she does the pirouettes abt style starting in a lunge and then plie right before turning.
All the "coaching" in the world isn't going to amount to much when the BASIC training is non-existent. And the word "spin" has no place in discussions about tours in classical dance. Spinning is what skaters do, a true pirouette is lifted and the thrill of doing them and watching them is going up as much as around.
yeah her doubles (even at the end) are kinda sloppy. Then notice how she is resting the raised foot on her thigh. In my shows & classes & teams we are supposed to "connect" the curved part of our foot to our knee cap. I guess she just looked off to me.
Please watch the whole video again. The whole point is that she starts out sloppy, but then using the technique points, she improves so that by the end, she has complete control through a quadruple pirouette.
Meja was a really reputable dancer, and pretty phenomenal for his time. Those that are commenting about his legitimacy, should educate yourselves about dance history. That being said, who really gives a rat's #$% how many pirouettes you can do? Look at the works of Ek,Naharin,Kylian, etc. The dancing featured in them speaks volumes about real artisty in dance in a way that some sorry 5,6, 7 pirouettes never could.Unfortunately, people think that spinning like a circus monkey=dancer extraordinaire.
Aesthetics-nil, balance-nil: This is a great example how NOT to pirouette. Loose pelvic floor and abs = swayback, no control, and too much muscular effort: UGLY.
how could you people who made comments push up from a straight leg? it is SO much easier to get up when you are in a plie, then push up to pase and then go around.
Ok, I agree that this is useless without sound. But I am a little confused why everyone is saying that she is starting from straight legs. She tries to start in a lunge (which is taught by plenty of people, its called the BALANCHINE TECHNIQUE), but always ends up doing a plie in fourth before she goes. So maybe you all should watch before you bash on her.
I agree that this wasn't the best video but I have to say that a lot of female dancers start their pirouettes without a plie in fourth including the girls at my studio.
What da fuck is this?! Those pirouettes are awful. Fist, you are not supossed to move from where the base feet is, second, basic arms are always in 1st position, in front of the stomach more less. And finally, they don't do plie, which is the main part of a pirouette. Also if you have to much momentum, you can stop gracefully with plie. If you wanna see some cool turns, check Rolando Sarabias' videos.
What a gimmick! I think this guy is just trying to get off by touching these women. Notice he doesn´t include HIMSELF doing any pirouettes. Also, the guy turns on his heel when demonstrating... any dancer knows that that is U-G-L-Y. It ain´t all about quantity, folks.
erm, honey he is gay, and a pretty phenomenal dancer. Someone misha and gelsey went to, to retrain. And he holds the record for doing about 22-23 pirouettes. And above all else he is beyond tricks...a truly superlative artist, whose interpretations of so many roles are truly heartbreaking and soul affirming.
Half baked knowledge is so dangerous at best. Think before you speak please.
yeah, the last pirouette is totally fake. Why would someone do that?

wouldn't learning in soft shoes also help you build more strength, since it's harder?
