  • So THIS is why I always end up at my house looking for wolves!

  • That awkward moment when you can not focus on the content cos the voice over puts an annoying emphasis at the end of each frikkin sentence.....

  • Apparently none of their study subjects knew how to pick a landmark on the horizon, while noting the original terrain, then when they reach the landmark, point a stick back to the terrain they came from, so the other end of the stick points them further on in a straight line to another landmark. Even when it's cloudy.

  • @satinISsexy no actually you're a moron and this 'circular walk' is a totally standard search pattern in nature. hope this helps!

  • what the fuck is wrong with her damn voice.

  • I got a job where i was a scientist experiment subject. alot of sleeping with monitors on me and virtual stuff. alot of test before in the middle and after. once i had to laydown for 2 days. got paid 500 a week

  • forget the research we just want the treadmill... where is to buy?

  • Well off course people walk in circles when blindfolded. THEY DON'T SEE A DEAMN THING!

  • Comment removed

  • With enough time, I imagine researchers could generate a mathematical model to estimate where people lost in the wilderness may end up. Ultimately, this could help focus search and rescue efforts, especially if you could include covariates such as topography, weather conditions, age, fitness, etc.

  • @snowgyre You may aswell use a random number generator

  • About the threadmill, I think being in a sphere sitting on four smaller spheres or balls would be way more efficient easier to do. If this sphere could morph somehow in order to recreate terrain variance, we could be seriously on our way to something like Star Trek's Holodeck. As an electrotechnician, I think I can actually visualize how it could work with todays technology... May be I should put some more thought into that...

  • @FamousSnatcher Why don't you make a sphere that we put people in, then put those on four balls?

    That exists.

  • @FamousSnatcher

What you are thinking off is basicly a mouse ball, except bigger and hollow.

  • How about you...i dunno BUILD the treadmill instead of paying some retarded price for it?

  • where can we get that treadmil

  • They should check geomagnetic activity and it's effect on our state of mind

  • actually this is a good step in research about the human gyroscopic senses the question is then just why do we walk in circles when blindfolded? also this might be to research the way humans navigate if they don´t have the sun stars and the moon to navigate from

  • @islagkage15963 "why do we walk in circles when blindfolded ?" Just a guess, but perhaps is it to increase chances to find a landmark...

  • talk about a monstrous waste of money

  • @FusedPube I don't know about that, understanding how the human brain works isn't a waste of money at all.

  • Could it be because we have a domiate side or because the mind gets bored and changes the direction

  • "AAAaalright, so, we're going to send you out into a forest blindfolded. Have fun."

  • If they made a virtual forest. They could just add a toy gun with a Wii like sensor. Then that would take care of Americas obese kids problems. Though it would be expensive. It would be freaking awesome. So if I ever become a millionaire. I know exactly what I'm getting.

  • this would be like amazing because we can play awesome video games with no limitations to what you do and get ecercise lol

  • virtual video game?plz

  • i don't care about the study i just want the virtual forest!

  • the coolest part about this research is that treadmill

  • So true :D I would love to have one of those. Imagine playing open world games like Oblivion or WoW. Maybe in the future. Epic idea tho :3

  • @Pyroney omg......most epic video game ever....and plus ud be working out!!

  • @threnodyofcrows I have been wondering how to that kind of a treadmill for over 3 years!!! Who do I talk to to get some info about that!!!!?!?

  • omfg youtube losers go away

    this is amazing research!

  • They can't afford a woman who can speak proper English? FFS! Get real, bitches.

  • what is the definition of "proper English" ? grammar? Well I think she is grammatically correct, are you discriminating based on accent?, well then what makes one accent more right than another?

  • No i'm saying that they could easily have got a commentator that more people can understand, speaking their native tongue.

I don't see the point in making someone, who's got a strong accent, narrate on something in English.

  • I hardly think that there's anyone who cannot understand her! she speaks perfectly well

  • and let me also remind you, this video is posted on Youtube, it's to broadcast to the English speaking world ...

  • Well done to you sir, thank you for getting that out there. Twat.

  • Thanks for that, but you have stooped way down and I sadly pity you

  • And I would give a shit about your petty good deeds, why?

It doesn't bother me. Stop wasting your time. I voiced myself. I wanted to. That's that. Up your's. :)

  • haha, now you're embarrassing yourself

  • Wow. You're just fed up of coming up with cheap come-backs, trying to get some ludicrous point across to someone who couldn't give 1 and a half shits what you thought. Well done. No, no, I really think you've made the most of your time here.

As, on a completely different matter, i'd like to point out...did it never cross your mind that I might enjoy making you frustrated? Right. Now what are you going to come up with?.....

  • lol, I'm the one frustrated? I think you're confused mate...

  • Give it a rest.

Go back to school, and stop figuring yourself someone worth considering as a 'mate'. More a martyr...

  • ooh but I'm not dead yet :P

  • Define proper English.

    You're lost.

  • I cleary mean her accent. Don't play ignorant with me, it's pathetic.

    I. Can't. Well. Understand. Her. Non-English. Accent.

    There?

  • If you can't understand her then some one else is having trouble understanding the English language.

Her words might be a bit weird but that's just because she is black or something.

  • I hear we walk in circles because one leg is longer than the other, maybe not, just hear that. people's legs are made like that.

  • Dude! that tredmil is awesome!

  • i think it's our posture

  • Virtual forest and that convyor mat or something... I see a hold new dimension in gaming! Let's just add a gun to carry and t'dah! We have a couple of million dollars.

  • @LehdaRi total win!

  • or you could play airsoft and skip the super expensive mat altogether :P

  • True.. But I still like the idea. And airsoft is pretty lame though compared to digital game full of effects and things like that.

I have another idea too. I'd call it "Virtual tourism". You can travel to cities you have dreamed to by just a click.

It could replace the old treadmill also. You could now jog in various virtual environments.

  • @LehdaRI oh man, I hope that never happens :P, jogging in a virtual would be depressing, and tourism, well, it wouldn't be tourism anymore, but I like the idea of gaming, that would be so cool, much more active and all that

  • @LehdaRi I love your idea!

  • cmmon any knowledge is of... useful knowledge, in a sense :)

  • i think her voice is sexy

  • well, just hope she doesnt say "circuller" or "simmilation" in the sack

  • her voice is so friggen annoying and queer

  • i wonder what the path of a drunk would look like

  • the path of a drunk would be absolutely straight!

  • yep, drunk people only appear to be walking in circles, because the sober ones are moving round and round

  • @place910 if we assume the drunk is equally likely to step in any direction:

let d = distance from start, x = number of steps taken

    d = sqrt(x)

  • Comment removed

  • @place910 a strait line ???

  • Sounds like a computer synthesised voice.

  • Nar. fail

  • Canadiansith ~ see the virtua sphere

It's a hamsterball for gamers and army soldiers.

Still maybe we're just more disoriented when it's cloudy (no sun). That's all this study might suggest.

  • That's exactly what it is. And this virtual testing bullshit won't point out anything, yet produce inaccurate and unreliable statistics.

  • @obesechicken13

I think they used the sun as a reference to determine direction.

  • The idea is pointless? But the tredmill is cool. Its a shame about the narrator too, she sounds so dull ond clueless.

  • hmmm... nothing better to spend taxpayers money on. tsss

  • What will come of learning which factors affect a persons navigation?

  • her voice is so annoying

  • I hate this bitches voice.

  • You have no idea if she's a bitch or not. But you have shown you are an asshole, though.

  • -_-

you're videos are so long that its annoying

  • this makes me wanna shit out that fucking big mac i had earlier today

  • lolwut

  • thats the futur of gaming right there...

  • Someone needs to forward this off to a game developer... I think people would pay a resonable amount to have one of those tread mills to enhance game play... no more fat and lazy gamers.

  • that treadmill is awesome

  • OMFG i want a treadmill that moves all ways :D!!! Thats the future of Gaming! You get to be the game! :D!!!

  • @Nicknacmania Exactly what I though about!

  • @Nicknacmania Now all hail the Xbox Kinect! <:D

  • @KonVeger lol nope

  • @Nicknacmania why not have a ball that freely moves with you like a treadmill

  • @YourMomsMomsGrandma True!! Like a mouse. Your way sounds more realistic and affordable.

  • @Nicknacmania this is actually true. This will be the future gaming. Like you get a "gun" and you walk on a treadmill like this. so its AWSOME OMG THEY SHOULD SELL THEESE OMG OMG OMG!!!

  • umm so the person when it was cloudy were they on crack or something? like wtf lmao

that person had to be retarded

  • The team is hoping to isolate the factors that effect their navagation.. Ummm Maybe trees in a forest ??.

  • makes sense guys, im actually more impressed with that free roaming treadmill, that thing is sweet

  • they could actually make fps games with tat

  • That is exactly what i'm thinking about.

  • "Blind folded people when tested walk in small circles and random directions!" Hilarious.. Classic..

  • yyyeaahh, the holodeck finally comes to reality!!

i need one, i really do!

  • obviously the sun and the way its light reflects uniformly over a forest will help in direction finding .

  • Cool idea. Utterly pointless though, lol

  • The treadmill that moves in all directions is a huge step towards virtual reality.

  • Damnit I thought of this as a kid, Only put me off because I thought it could only go left right forwards backwards.

  • Lol I thought of somthing like this too, oh well, we we're beaten to it lol, and yah I had the same "design problem".

    God bless,

    Dan.

  • Sometimes I imagine what paths we would make if everyone had a light bulb on their heads: the walk around on earth, the earth spins on its axis and orbits the sun, the solar system moves through the galaxy, the galaxy....

  • Haha, I just read your comment,

I think you may be right !!! lol

  • awesome i remember i got a bit lost in the woods of ruidoso, new mexico and seemed to have walked in a circle cus i ended up in a lake i was watching and it was very cloudy that day.

  • Hook that thing up to WoW and see if people walk in circles. Heck, I'll do it, strap me in and load it up.

  • honestly, that is a very interesting idea.. I wonder if we would do it in a virtual setting as well.

  • LOL.. someone just said to follow the sun... Have you ever studied about climatics, and how sun is placed in different climaticareas.

  • whant 2 try the experiment

  • This applies to political movements as well.

  • I used to walk like the blue line in my teens. Too much beer AND it was only a streets length!

But I'm cured now as I'm much older! :o)

  • Cool I look up to you.

  • lol

  • lmfao

  • Comment removed

  • wow great money spent there by our government on studying how humans cant help walking in circles on cloudy days

  • Typical knee jerk response from a Republitard.

If you could read, you would have noticed at the end of the clip that it says... video and images courtesy of the max planck institute for biological cybernetics...which is in GERMANY.

And yeah, they're scientists so they are CURIOUS about why stuff happens, so they study EVERYTHING. It's what makes humans HUMAN.

I know YT is infamous for morons making comments ad nauseam but...enough already.

  • Definitely. Our government (Assuming you live in the same country as I do) definitely owns all independent research groups. Excellent assumptions in this comment.

  • lol I bet 99% of people are more interested in the virtual reality treadmill than people veer off to one direction........

  • Treadmill is actually cooler than the study itself, but the study itself forces thought when lost not to walk in circles.

  • Sweet treadmill. Just thought of the latest addition to my basement.

  • People that were blindfolded tended to walk in random directions

    What a discovery!!!

  • fucking brilliant man! im serious those bastards are mentally retarded

  • Why did they have to go to the Sahara to test that? It's not the only place that gets a lot of sun. Good to see money's not being wasted,

  • i don''t care if it is good or not, the virtual reality part is just plain cool.

  • Forget all this "research" into navigation.

    How much for the TREADMILL?

  • anyone else think that special treadmill would be KICKASS for virtual reality first-person shooters?

  • exactly what I was thinking, that treadmill, mixed in with project natal, holy shit I'm in.

  • At least hardcore gamers would get more exercise that way!

  • or u could play airsoft for one hundreth the price of the treadmill and ten times the realism lol

  • or paintball which is 1/1000th the gay of airsoft

  • ah but with airsoft u dont get red paint all over urself, and also the guns and reloads are much more realistic. its really dependant on who u play with i guess...

  • After every statement this lady finishes she makes it sound like a question. Navigation?

  • One eye is dominate, therefore you direct yourself into a certain direction (left or right), and you end up making curves or in some cases, circles.

    Mystery solved.

  • Damn and they spent all that money too..

They should have just asked ya man..

You are the man.. !! Whew who..

  • Thanks for the sarcasm. But dam it, its the truth! Also if you blind yourself, another dominance then takes over, which is simply one or the other side of your body.

Feel free to look it up.

  • I want a gaming rig like that.

  • use the sun to locate is easy and works just remember where u r in relationship to it

location of sun in relationship to your direction from a point, time of your movement then to return ,it works ,,

  • or, just remember your compass and map when wandering the Sahara Desert =P

  • My $600 GPS unit tells me... we're in the middle of an big area of sand.

  • and how did y get to a peace of sand magic lol

  • the sun and moon and stars , and a stick ,

4 fingers = about an hour so this olo is like half an hour o i ment lloo

  • actually that would make you walk in circles...well the earth is spining, and the sun wont stay still..! if your lost in a desert i doubt it would take you less than an hour to get to a safe point...

  • Moses didn't go in Circles.. !!

  • moses wasn't lost lol

  • Yeah he was following a tubular shaped object in the sky to Mt. St, ? or..? lol

    Where he went.. lol.

  • he never got to his destination i'd say he was in some kind of error

  • circular moment when lost may give the person lost te best way to find there stating point or a land mark ,, well duh

  • ive heard this all the time and good to see some backing...

  • Can the narrators voice be any more annoyin??!!

  • look at the bright side, at least she doesn't sound like ben stein (idk how to spell his last name lol)

  • yup

  • i wanted to see the diagram of the blind folded people

  • A treadmill that goes in all directions and virtual reality? Man, the next step is to implement it in video games! Can't wait!

  • wow all directional treadmill!!!!

Here comes halo in 4D woooot

  • the 4thD is time, how is that possible?.

  • 3 D its hight with and depth , time is the interval an object take to travel between any 2 points so it may be thought of as a dimension parameter , according to my 5 grade teacher prof Julius sum de Muller

  • I remember a teacher telling me (when I was about 9) that people will walk either clockwise if they are right handed, or anticlockwise if the are left handed.

English school system may be called into question at the end of this new research.

  • deepens which your dominant or strongest leg is. he one you start off i bike with

  • that virtual reality thing only has one real true useful use.......video games!

  • Does anybody else see the capabilties of the tredmil could be also used for a incredible gaming experiance-

  • Great video`s :))

  • imagine trying to get off of that treadmill

  • WAAAHHAAAAHHHH!! I WANNA GET OFF!!

  • hahahhahaa xD and wtf is up with the blue lines. That is really bad walking right there.

  • i want one of those treadmills :D

  • i want the whole system!

  • MEDIC !!!!!

  • how do we participate in that? I want a go!!!

  • So that's where they are keeping the master treadmill. The progenitor of all lesser treadmills. Huh.

  • one foot bigger than the other

  • I don't trust this as science, the standardization for the methods used just seems unclear and variable.... and being on a strange treadmill with a VR headset simply isn't the same as being lost.

  • ok, so if I'm in a forest on a cloudy day, I ain't moving!

  • when i took a survival course with the famous Tom Brown, he said that generally people will do a circle in 1 mile if they are walking straight and lost.

  • Great to see this on youtube finally. People should know, IMO. Because when you get actually lost somewhen, you'll be glad you saw this.

On a slight sidenote: WOHOO for the VR. Can't wait until this gets used more.
