i read somewhere that the first shot of this scene was perfect... but kubrick wanted nicholson's face to look really tired so they shot it more than 60 times!!!!!
I heard that Shelley Duvall's performance of a traumatized women about to lose her minde was more real cause Stanley Kubrick was kinda of a jerk to her during filming, on purpose. Great movie though.
This movie terrifies me. There is hardly any gore and all the 'scary' movies these days are chock full of blood and guts, and this movie beats all of them by a mile.
@Dysphorria there's a difference between Psychological horror and those slashing and bashing horrors. There are still a lot of psychological horror movies these days but they're not that scary. The Shining is a bonafied horror classic. I'm sorry if you don't like this movie then in my opinion your not a true fan of the genre type. I just love Jack Nicholson though. just think how many more good horror movies we would see nowadays if there were actors and actresses that could act anywhere near as good as him in addition to great script writing.
@kotulakj2 Yeah but you know, good horror movies were rare when this came out, in my opinion. There's always the temptation to talk about the good old days because only the classics survive from the good old days. We tend to forget the reams of crap that came out 30 years ago. This movie is a standout, and it's stood the test of time. A few movies from the 2000s and 2010s will too.
jack seemed to put his hand right where the bat was already headed, as if he tried to grab the bat. i counted 41 swings of the bat, but only the last 2 swings made contact. i think the last swing was the only one where wendy intended to hit jack. the previous swings seem like attempts to get him to back off. it's interesting that the swing that really hurt jack happened when he was near the top of the stairs, such that his fall would cause the most damage. maybe wendy waited for that moment .
