ferrel81. I see you mentioned careys 94 prelim.Yes I have that match on tape and have seen it on youtube, but mate, abletts 89 prelim is better. statistically abletts match is better and to watch them both abletts highlights are clearly superior
My top 10, post 1977: 1. Gary Ablett (Snr) 2. Leigh Matthews 3. Tony Lockett 4. Gary Ablett (Jnr) 5. Robert Flower 6. Jason Dunstall 7. Adam Goodes 8. Greg Williams 9. Micheal Voss 10. Nathan Buckley
What about him? I know he was good but slightly overrated IMO, and by that I mean so many people say he was the best, but to me, he was "one of the best" but didn't make my top 10. Possibly 11th. Post your top 10 dude.
Great top 10 but i think i could move Buckley up 2 spots and had Buddha Hocking instead of Diesel through the centre. (Liberatore anyone?)
I know Williams got the Brownlow but he was a total mullet (& cried for frees) when opposed to GH.
And to answer metmanpedro,
I reckon Jackovich or Stoneham were equal to Carey in the day, except they were used across half back to combat him instead of going forward for the glory.
Ablett Snr as #1 is the most intelligent post on YouTube. Bottom line...
So many great players left out I know. James Hird, Malcolm Blight, Libba, Peter Moore, Peter Daicos, Darren Millane, Trevor Barker, Alex Jesalenko, Kevin Bartlett, Wayne Carey, Chris Judd, Simon Black, Paul Kelly, Dermott Brereton, Phil Matera, Gerald Healy, Paul Roos, Mark Riccuto, Gary Hocking, Gavin Brown, Stephen Kernahan, Tim Watson, Brad Hardie, Jason Ackermanis, Paul Couch, Nick Reiwoldt, Jim Stynes, would all be right up there aswell. Cheers.
to not have carey in your top 10 is a sign of obvious bias which renders your entire list redundant. every credible list by every footy expert since the late 90s has had carey at or near the top. are they all wrong!? my post 1985 top 10: 1. wayne carey 2. gary ablett snr 3. tony lockett 4. jason dunstall 5. greg williams 6. michael voss 7. james hird 8. stephen kernahan 9. nathan buckley 10. robert harvey (stephen silagni just missing out)
zenmoon3 your obviously a typical richmond supporter. one eyed and come out of the woodwork occasionally. richo was only "good" cos the rest of the team were hacks.
@zenmoon3 hahahaha you fail mate miserably.... ablett is the greatest player to ever have played AFL, i can name 10 players that are far better than richo, richo only looks half decent because the rest of the richmond team are that crap they make him look good when in reality hes only a decent player, no where near the status of ablett "THE BEST OF ALL TIME"
I say this as an Essendon supporter: Gary Ablett is the best player I have ever seen. Carey was huge, Hird amazing, Voss brilliant, Plugga a machine, Dunstall precision...... but none of them compare to the great man. Ablett was the best.
Being Geelong I am biased..but a lot of non-Geelong supporters agree with you..I managed to check out a Brisbane Lions players book in the late nineties and I reckon two thirds of them said Ablett is the best they've seen..all the others you mentioned..superstars..Ablett Snr..megastar.....the whole world should have been aware of his exploits!
Ablett went on to win three Coleman Medals at the age when Carey retired. The saddest thing about Abletts career was the arrival of Gary Ayres at Geelong. A since 'failed' coach. Kevin Sheedy once said "I'd have him playing off the bench until he is 40". If only.
YABLEEEETT!! was the best footy player I have the privilege to watch since I started watching this game in 1977.
I barrack for Collingwood, so I am not expressing bias towards my club, but you are off your rocker nominating Carey. He wasn't even the best North player ever; Blight, Dench, Schimma and Keith Greig were better players than Carey, and I also reckon that Brereton was a better C/H/F.

u tool carey was a good player but could never do half the shit ablett could do on the feild.. who kicks 9 goals in a loseing gf?? and single handly almost one a gf of is own boot..
ferrel81 is a fukin tool who know fuck all about footy, carey was a superstar, but still could not do what ablett did. didnt see carey boot as many goals as gazza and start on the wing. and by the way id say leigh matthews better than both as far as influence on a game when it mattered over a long long time, thats why he was named the greatest player ever. but even leigh couldnt do what gazza did.
i think ferrel is just winding up the cats fans. Im a hawk supporter and rate Ablett sr the best player i have ever seen. If people never saw him live his highlight reels show something very unique. A 1 in a million athlete with footy ability oozing from his pores. He had the "X" factor, as did carey and Hird in my opinion. (i have seen the 3 of them tear apart the hawks off their own boot. But i put Ablett at number 1. Just spectacular....
seriosly... there are all these deluded cat fans out there who think ablett was the best ever... get over it, he was not the best. he may just squeeze into the best half dozen of all time but there are a number of players you'd pick before you picked ablett - and carey is definately one of them.
Ablett kicked over 1000 goals and carey couldnt. Neither has Lloyd or fevola. Ablett Snr played in the middle, on the wing, half forward and full forward. Find a pleyer today who's done that. Mate, he was the complete package. And cats fans arnt deluded, just passionate.

i do genuinely believe that. i was a huge ablett fan when i was a kid. but you have to differentiate between talent and overall greatness as a player. ablett may well have been faster, more agile etc. but careys greatness was far more than just his highlight reel. watch the vids 'Great Carey Games - Rnd 11 1996' or 'Wayne Carey 94PF' you'll see carey dominate all around the ground, in the air and at ground level and show his extreme skill in all facets of the game.
anyone who doesnt call him the best player ever has never played footy or knows nothing about it at all. One of the first players to have two defenders on him all game. any sport gary chose he would have been the greatest just glad it was afl.
mate pretty much every player, past or present will tell you either wayne carey, ted whitten or leigh matthews was the best player ever. i guess it depends what era they played. so your comment makes no sense... Bob Davis, Tommy Hafey, Ron Barassi, Ron Carter and Ken Hands ranked ablett number 7 in the age last year. i'm pretty sure most of those guys used to play!!
this guy is the most naturally gifted sportsman of all time, period.I dont follow geeelong but anyone who doesnt say that hes the greatest ever does not know what they r talking about
I remember a game in shithouse conditions at the Junction oval against my beloved Roy Boys. He tore us apart on his own. Drove home saying "that fucking Ablett" over and over. What a player
Muzzanator?? Good bogan name you ignorant loser. I used to think tha same thing about AFL until I moved to Melbourne and stayed for 5 yrs. Hated Melbourne but if you appreciate real sport and a real contest, AFL is the greatest game on earth.
These were Ablett´s most spectacular years, when he took a mark of the year contender every round. In the mid-80s Geelong would have been lucky to be telecast five or six times a season. Just think of all those Ablett hangers that never made it on film. Then again we were lucky to at least have something.
a freakish player could do things that no other player could but i think careys better because he was more physical and had a bigger presence robert scott played for both teams and rated carey better
Buddy Franklin......are you kidding?!! He's the man of the moment (though IMO no where near as consistent or valuable as Ablett junior). Franklin wouldn't even make it into the top 10 of all time. Ablett senior is in the top 3, and I think it's too hard to pick a clear winner.
Gary Jnr is obviously a gifted player, but no one compares to Gary Snr and his absolute freakish abilities he turned out week after week for well over a decade. Gary Snr gave so much to the game it is really a disgrace he hasn't been honoured with hall of fame status.
No one compares to Ablett snr? Carey is often voted the best player of all time by experts and fans alike. North had the game plan of clearing everyone out kicking it to Carey. He led them to two flags. Buddy is Taller than Ablett snr, quicker, stronger, more athletic etc etc. Like Leigh Matthews and a whole host of others said Buddy will be the greatest of all time and will win flags for his team something Ablett Sr never did. Not saying he's not a great but take the blinkers off and Go Saints!
Gary Ablett Snr is the only non-full forward to kick over 1000 goals (Carey only kicked 727and played in a better side which made him look better than he was).
Ablett may not have won a premiership but he played in 4 losing grand finals and won a norm smith in 89. And Buddy hasnt even played 100 games yet so its too early to label him the 'greatest of all time'
In my opinion, Ablett Snr wasn't the greatest of all time (although he would be very close to it) overall as a player, but he was probably the most gifted player when it came to the skill aspect of the game. Sure there have been faster, stronger, more athletic players, but you couldn't name one player who could handle a footy like Ablett could. The man was a football genius.
Both Gary Abletts are absolutely brilliant. Freaks. I do still hold greater esteem for Gary Snr, but Jnr has plenty of years left in him. For him to stand out in the current Geelong squad the way he does is amazing. He's brilliant, but hasn't quite reached the echelons his father did in my opinion. Time will tell.
Was watch Jnr on the weekend and thinking damn he's amazing. But Gaz senior is a freak! Completely unstoppable in the air and on the ground and the goals from anywhere from the centre to the pocket. Not sure we'll ever see another player like him. Buddy is the only current player the even hints at being able to do half this stuff, but his goal sense is woeful.
Teams can have their Dunstalls and lockets kicking thousands of goals. At the end of the day this guy topped the thousand and played most his career at half forward. When he did go to full forward he was passed his prime and still blitzed it. Gary Ablett Snr is the single greatest AFL layer of all time.
gary snr is a legend and im glad in runs in the family with his sons, although i dont like how people always compare jr and snr, gary jnr is a superstar in his own right and shouldnt be compared to his father.
I went to the bank, withdrew $10 and gave it to my nephew. He then proceeded to the milkbar and bought five chocolate bars, chips and a coke. He enjoyed them very much. (Yes, as you can see, now we can all write boring and mundane sentences.)
no actually you tosser, gary jnr played 1 very very outstanding game last weekend, and for the last 4 days all i've heard on the radio and tv is him being compared to his father, has anyone been watching gary the last 2 years.. absoulutly brilliant. unfortunatly it's taken this long for people to relise how great Jnr is, and now is finally getting the credit he deserves
(as if you could afford 10 bucks for your nephew)
...You also brought a father and son closer together- united in their breathless admiration for your skills.
My greatest fear is that the young blokes growing up these days will not know just how incredible it was to watch you live... Then again, they have Gary Junior and Nathan. In them I see you 'Superman'; 'Genius'; 'God'; 'Gazza'.
'All-time legend'.
Salute! You will never be forgotten by anyone who saw you. Never.
The greatest moments of my life were watching you: The finest athlete that ever graced the footy field, the earth even, but the footy field is the earth. I'm 23 now, so you made young kid's childhood worth remembering!
The posters and memorabilia I picked up at Kardinia Park, when I was lucky enough to make the 7 hour trip with my old man, to see you and the Cats, have never moved from their ultimate position on my 'wall of honour'...
Thanks to whoever posted these highlight reels. I was a huge fan of Ablett Snr back in his day and its been years since I've seen footage of him. Great work!
ha ha. awesome. no need for the hands in the back there. he just jumps on top on them. love the winnies 25s adds around the fence. those were the days. rough and tough footy, mud, water logged balls, super star full forwards kicking 100 plus per season.
How come the commentators don't scream out "YAAAAAAABALEEEEEET!" whenever he kicks a goal or takes a speccie, I don't see why not? This is why Channel 7 need Brian Taylor and Dermott Brereton as a part of their commetary team!
Maybe not the best player of all time , but definitely the most skillful/brilliant/exciting player to watch. Only if there was more camera's at some of his early games (1984-1987) to capture some of his classic 'screamers'.
the mark against the Kangaroos at 4:25 was amazing. multiple highlights in the same game against Hawks, Lions, Tigers and Swans; the bloke was uncanny in his early years, a raw, spectacular athlete. Was just as good later in his career ('89-'95), but he was brilliantly unpredictable around '85/'85 ...
hahaha 3:55 classic!

If this doesn't categorically prove Carey's superiority over Ablett, what will?
Geelong's results during Ablett's 13 yr tenure. (won/played)
Ablett played - 140/242 = 57.8%
Ablett didn't play - 31/61 = 50.8%
North's results during Carey's 13 yr tenure
Carey played - 152/244 = 62.3%
Carey didn't play - 26/61 = 42.6%
Ablett improved Geelong's winning % by 7%, or 17 wins out of his 242 games.
Carey improved North's winning % by 20%, or 48 wins out of his 244 games.
Enough said!

Muzzanator?? Good bogan name you ignorant loser. I used to think tha same thing about AFL until I moved to Melbourne and stayed for 5 yrs. Hated Melbourne but if you appreciate real sport and a real contest, AFL is the greatest game on earth.

what a fagot game

These were Ablett´s most spectacular years, when he took a mark of the year contender every round. In the mid-80s Geelong would have been lucky to be telecast five or six times a season. Just think of all those Ablett hangers that never made it on film. Then again we were lucky to at least have something.

gun... and his son is making a fair highlight real himself however agree that wayne carey is still the greatest player to play
camoburna27 2 years ago
a freakish player could do things that no other player could but i think careys better because he was more physical and had a bigger presence robert scott played for both teams and rated carey better
willandshaylin08 2 years ago
Buddy Franklin......are you kidding?!! He's the man of the moment (though IMO no where near as consistent or valuable as Ablett junior). Franklin wouldn't even make it into the top 10 of all time. Ablett senior is in the top 3, and I think it's too hard to pick a clear winner.

Ablett Snr is the best player I've seen. His better seasons were later in his career though. Can't wait to see Ablett jnr in the next few seasons

Gary Jnr is obviously a gifted player, but no one compares to Gary Snr and his absolute freakish abilities he turned out week after week for well over a decade. Gary Snr gave so much to the game it is really a disgrace he hasn't been honoured with hall of fame status.
Quest1989 3 years ago 2
No one compares to Ablett snr? Carey is often voted the best player of all time by experts and fans alike. North had the game plan of clearing everyone out kicking it to Carey. He led them to two flags. Buddy is Taller than Ablett snr, quicker, stronger, more athletic etc etc. Like Leigh Matthews and a whole host of others said Buddy will be the greatest of all time and will win flags for his team something Ablett Sr never did. Not saying he's not a great but take the blinkers off and Go Saints!
arcticoasisbeatle 3 years ago
Gary Ablett Snr is the only non-full forward to kick over 1000 goals (Carey only kicked 727and played in a better side which made him look better than he was).
Ablett may not have won a premiership but he played in 4 losing grand finals and won a norm smith in 89. And Buddy hasnt even played 100 games yet so its too early to label him the 'greatest of all time'
Victorian105 3 years ago
wot do u mean non-full forward
he was full forward because he wasnt fit enought to be chf + in the forward line it was all about him
talented players like brownless can only wonder wot couldve been if ablett had a better attitude
desperadonige 2 years ago
In my opinion, Ablett Snr wasn't the greatest of all time (although he would be very close to it) overall as a player, but he was probably the most gifted player when it came to the skill aspect of the game. Sure there have been faster, stronger, more athletic players, but you couldn't name one player who could handle a footy like Ablett could. The man was a football genius.
shaolinmonk15 3 years ago
Both Gary Abletts are absolutely brilliant. Freaks. I do still hold greater esteem for Gary Snr, but Jnr has plenty of years left in him. For him to stand out in the current Geelong squad the way he does is amazing. He's brilliant, but hasn't quite reached the echelons his father did in my opinion. Time will tell.

ablett is better then carey no doubt about it
YAGOTTALUVHENDRIX 3 years ago
AHHHHHHHHHHH CAREY BETTER THAN ABLETT LOL
how many goals did carey kick
ablett wasnt even a full forward most of his career he was a wing that managed 1030 goals
InferiorPotassium93 3 years ago
Was watch Jnr on the weekend and thinking damn he's amazing. But Gaz senior is a freak! Completely unstoppable in the air and on the ground and the goals from anywhere from the centre to the pocket. Not sure we'll ever see another player like him. Buddy is the only current player the even hints at being able to do half this stuff, but his goal sense is woeful.

buddy franklin is nowhere near as good its just caus his so much bigger then everyone else

Teams can have their Dunstalls and lockets kicking thousands of goals. At the end of the day this guy topped the thousand and played most his career at half forward. When he did go to full forward he was passed his prime and still blitzed it. Gary Ablett Snr is the single greatest AFL layer of all time.

gary snr is a legend and im glad in runs in the family with his sons, although i dont like how people always compare jr and snr, gary jnr is a superstar in his own right and shouldnt be compared to his father.
but their both legends
btw: CATS ARE THE GREASTEST TEAM OF ALL :)

I went to the bank, withdrew $10 and gave it to my nephew. He then proceeded to the milkbar and bought five chocolate bars, chips and a coke. He enjoyed them very much. (Yes, as you can see, now we can all write boring and mundane sentences.)
junkywarveteran 3 years ago
no actually you tosser, gary jnr played 1 very very outstanding game last weekend, and for the last 4 days all i've heard on the radio and tv is him being compared to his father, has anyone been watching gary the last 2 years.. absoulutly brilliant. unfortunatly it's taken this long for people to relise how great Jnr is, and now is finally getting the credit he deserves

Gary Senior - if you're reading this - thanks for giving me my love of footy. I owe it to you. Hope the boys play well tomorrow and win that flag.

ha ha. awesome. no need for the hands in the back there. he just jumps on top on them. love the winnies 25s adds around the fence. those were the days. rough and tough footy, mud, water logged balls, super star full forwards kicking 100 plus per season.
