@650yoghurt LEDs are Light Emitting Diodes and NEON is a gas that is excited by electricity and glows. What is pictured here is just LEDs in a long tube, not actual neon.

Wow! In 2.5 years of comments, there's nothing here that explains the technology (aside from establishing that it's not true neon). So what is it? I am *guessing* that each tube has a large number of LED's, each individually addressable. But it would be real nice if someone would take the time to explain what it is, rather than what it isn't.

And as a bonus, please explain what's on the outside of the tube -- some kind of translucent glass or plastic?

@TroyOi - Each tube has 144 LED's (48 x red, 48 x green, 48 x blue), these are basically set out in rows of 3 along the 1m tube.

As in the description these tubes are very basic and can not be individually controlled. There is a controller box (out of view) that has predefined sequences and patterns and can control a certain number of tubes. In larger projects (more than the 10 tubes used here) you could control them via DMX or VGA.

The tubes are made from white plastic.

At various spots in the clip (eg, 00:35) it sure looks like there's a fairly high degree of resolution in control of the LEDs. Are you saying that each tube has a built-in controller which runs patterns based on more general commands sent to it?

Also, how big are these? Same size as the fluorescent tubes used in light fixtures?

@TroyOi There is a single controller that is providing a signal to the chain of tubes. However there is no way to set what pattern this controller is sending. The tubes have a range of about 16.7 million colors (from memory), they may be able to be individually controlled, however, as I only received these as a demo batch I did not get that controller.

The tubes are 1000mm x 50mm x 50mm

very, very nice! I first saw these 'neons' at a Daft Punk show. They had all of the back wall covered in them, connected in tessellating triangular arrays. In a lot of the online videos, you only see them flashing solid colours. At the actual show, they were strobing all kinds of waterfalls & moving patterns like they're doing here. This is one of the nicest LED effects I've seen. Pure, vibrant, changing, moving colours, but diffused enough to not be annoying to look at.

Ummm, you do know there's no such thing as LED neon lights, right? I mean neon is a gas and LEDs don't use neon gas. Neon gas needs high amounts of energy to excite it to glow in a vacuum. LEDs require very low current to operate.

Please get it right.

@sparky3489 Hey, moron. The product is CALLED an "LED Neon Tube" or "Neon LED Tube Light". Google it if you don't believe me. It's sold by hundreds of vendors. It doesn't have to have NEON gas in it to use the term in a descriptive manner. Kind of like how if I call you a rude asshole and you're not really a giant anal sphincter... or are you?

The perm blue tube is blue because the LED controller wasn't told how many tubes are connected or in what order. Should be done everytime the tubes are changed or moved
