@yadusolparterre It could have been a little smoother I guess. I don't really like this ending because it is obvious it's coming from under the table and out of his hand. There's no other explanation. I think it would have been better to load a ton of small balls under the centre cup using mendozoa's coin production idea. Then build up a few seconds before producing a shower off them. You'd build in time misdirection as well as get away from a big ball dropped straight from his hand.
young conjurers watching this....please do not ever tell the secret to this wonderful routine. Please only share it in the privacy of magic clubs if you ever figure it out.
@MagicTusky9 If anyone wants anything explained I'll tell them. One of the main secrets is he has a ringer in his sleeve so he can shake an empty cup on the table and it sounds like there is a ball underneath.
@heelfan1234 Paul can do this effect without sleves....just like Danny Ray does. Paul does not need a ringer in his sleeve. As a magician member of The Academy of Magical Arts, I will not explain the secret to "anyone"! Magic secrets are special. I am sure Mr. Gertner would not want you giving away his secrets for free.
@MagicTusky9 Sure the effect could be done without a ringer in the sleeve, but it can be concealed elsewhere. The viewers should be aware that ringers can be used in this version of the cups and balls so it sounds as though there is ball under the cup. Mr Gertner may not be able to figure out where the big ball at the end comes from or want to give it away, but I can tell you it comes from under the table!
This is You tube Not the Academy where we all discuss effects to help magical education.
@heelfan1234 I have a couple problems with what you are saying. First off, there is no ringer used. Secondly, why should viewers be aware that this is even a possibility? The purpose of magic is for it to be a mystery, and by giving the explanation in the comments of the video, you ruin the magic for anyone who reads the comments and isnt a magician.
@heelfan1234 Thirdly, Youtube is NOT the place to discuss magical secrets. Thats what various magic clubs and forums are for. Not a website that laypeople have easy access to, thus revealing the secret to the whole world. Finally, this is not your routine. You have absolutely no right to give away the method behind something that you didnt create and that you weren't given permission to reveal, especially not where any layperson under the sun could find it easily.
@heelfan1234 He doesn't use as you say "A ringer" If you had Paul's book you would know that. Your whole explanation on this and everything else you try to explain is incorrect.
Gertner created a great parlor-magic routine. He gets invited to nicer parties than I do. I'm a street magician, so I've adjusted Gertner's masterpiece for the street.
@eddiedaskull A magician in Wichita does a version in his street act -- in 60 seconds flat, Faster with rhyming patter. Gertner wrote the instructions in his book, but they're only for doing the act seated.
Potential students should study the production of the final large ball as presented here and that by Danny Ray Thomson who also has videos posted of this routine
It's my contention that Danny's presentation is much slicker and much better than Paul did here. Note how Danny drops the ball with a real thud and his timing is spot on. His patter is also sharp whereas Paul mumbles something about not knowing where it came from. Danny's drew gasps, Paul's is clumsy & the load is somewhat obvious.
When he was revealing the balls underneath the cups he went to his pocket and got a big ball and put it under the cup when he put the cup back down!
When he revealed the big balls, he went underneath the table and got an even bigger ball and dropped that out of his hand with the cup above trying to make look like it came out of the cup.
You should try leaving comments on movie trailers telling people how the films end. It's kind of similar to what you're doing here, except then, even MORE people will dislike you.
Well I hope you don't dislike me just because I am helping out people with quick tutorial. By following my explanations and studying the video, people can have a go at trying this out and developing their own routines. Anyway, what he did is based on a lot of Dai Vernon's stuff so it's no huge secret, I'm just helping people make the links. I can explain the whole routine for them.
Well firstly, let me say that I basically learnt magic off youtube and really appreciate people creating videos to explain magic principles.
This is not what you're doing.
Your putting the explanations right UNDERNEATH the videos. Even people that don't want to find out can't help it. If you want to explain things, create a video that states that it is an explanation. Secondly, I don't really agree with explaining people's professional routines. Sleights and moves are more acceptable.
These magicians make a living from the performance of their tricks. You are reducing the enjoyment of the viewer and detracting due credit away from the performer.
The average viewer won't 'have a go'. Your explanations are for potential magicians who are willing to research and practice these routines. You should create a tutorial. Leaving comments underneath is not the right way to go about doing this.
Hmmm that's an interesting point of view. I can't say I agree with it but I understand where you are coming from.
My view is that it is largely magicians or potential magicians that watch these vids and certainly mostly magicians who read the comments.
It's obvious that some technical discussion goes on in the comments. A lay person will watch the vid and be entertained. They won't want to look at the comments if they don't want to know. Even if they did they would soon look away & not read.
You Tube is helping lots of people get into magic as it helped you. This is a good thing. Magical education should be free like all education should be. Many young people can't afford the high prices put out by people simply recycling existing material like Vernon's routine. I think it's our duty if we have magical knowledge to explain some of the sleights so that new people can appreciate what is going on, maybe try it out & learn. Magic is booming as never before! New people help magic sales.
I partly agree with you. I think that magic tricks are extremely expensive, even for relatively well known sleights. Teaching these basic sleights that everyone knows is a good thing, provided that it is only accesible to those that want to learn it. But once again, you are describing a prof. routine.
Magical education is NOT the same as normal education. The tricks are magical only because the method used is unknown. If the solution was too easily accessible, it would not be magic.
Well the routine is pretty much common sleights, based roughly on Vernon's with the addition of the sounding bracelet. The sleights are pretty common. Miller's cup penetration move, false transfers, and basic loads. He even adds Vernon's mumbo jumbo false explanation as an excuse to go to his pocket to put away the small balls to obtain his final loads which I thought were well done with the exception of the last big one where the timing was off and the patter weak.
Please, don't even use their names together. Criss Angel has nothing on this man. They're not even in the same league. Gertner actually has talent. Angel is a hack...
Paul's a great guy. If you've seen any of his other routines, they're just as knuckle-busting and incredible. This one is just soooo deceptive, even when you know what he's doing move by move!
It's true that his patter is a little boring in the beggining but the sound effects add so much to the illusion that the balls are under the cups: it's a brilliant idea! And the bigger and bigger balls make a great climax.
I agree with JoeLeeBush. Though the sleight-of-hand and individuality Gertner demonstrates here with his steel balls, he does have a monotone and slightly boring patter.
Check out Michael Ammar's Cups And Balls under the related videos section to the right. Not only is his sleight-of-hand great, but his patter is funny, up-beat, and entertaining.
He clearly explains that it was where he grew up - hence the steel mills. Plus it is still known as a steel city. Why does it need to be updated?! I find it much more interesting than the baseballs or standard balls everyone else uses! Excellent routine, one of the best, if not the best I have ever seen!
Paul Gertner has definitely got a great routine. I've always wanted the metal cups and balls for that. I should get them... make my own routine but totally use his ending.
well, besides dai vernon, there's been only 2 magicians who have been able to improve the skill of cups & balls ever, and Paul Gertner is one of them.
