Just found out she is engaged to Carlos Santana, who I admire a lot, didn't really know of her ,watched several videos of her playing. I don't like Jazz at all, but I gave her a shot, she seems too loud and drowns out the band on all the vids I watched.
Jazz lovers seem to like her.....but I find her playing and all Jazz irritating...... its all over the place.sorry...
Cindy Blackman is the only true heir to the Tony Williams throne; she alone has the same untamed raw energy & chops as Tony. Most importantly, she is not from the modern Berklee 'machine' school of playing. Go Cindy!
Listened to a radio concert yesterday (from Quasimodo/Berlin June 3/09) This is a piece by the Tony Williams new lifetime from 1975 "Snake oil" from "Believe it " album. I think, Tony Willians (RIP) was the main influence (?) on Cindy (similar drumming approach/style). She plays much better, than all the male drummers, I´ve been working with. She will have no problems in future to make a living from playing the drums..Her 3 collegues play well here, either.
