hey man since you're like the closest thing to being a doctor in Bonhamology this part in his live moby dick is killin me maybe you can help me out what exaclty is he doing at 1:56-2:02 it goes to fast foe me figure out if hes even using his feet or if hes just doin fast 16th note triplets with his hands, thanks man you're the king
I like how you are like smooth and not over doing it. ppl gotta have alot of skill to over do it. But it takes more school to do what you do. ur not just hitting hard u got flow. This style seems more like the old school style. Styles these days alot of ppl focus on speed :S. good job. Im getting a E-drum set very soon ordering in a couple of days. Ive prob played real drums like 30-40 times no lessons and im very good for how little ive drumed :). I will learn all kinda styles. Techniques
Could you make a video illustrating proper traditional grip technique? After using it my elbow becomes so sore it doesn't feel right. Also, maybe those shiatsu exercises to alleviate pain?
hey bonzo...OH i mean groovy drums, how do you get you're snare work so good any rudiment videos you can suggest? Also do you believe a practice pad is beneficial? i would like one but 50$ is a sum for a hunk of plastic. BTW your drumming is very solid i like how you seem so simple to the novice drummer but you are actually quite technical that's the style i'm trying to develop. "under cover good." hahaha thanks.
I suggest practicing singles, doubles and single paradiddle. A practice pad is a good thing but you don't really have to spend $50 on one. For many years I would use a telephone book to practice on. Thank you so much for watching and the kind words.
One thing to watch for is practice pads that are either rubber or extremely hard plastic. They simply don't feel like hitting a real drum head, so it'll screw you up. aka...you'll get use to the "bounce" of the stick on a surface that doesn't react like a real head. I use to use the corner of my bed with no sheets or anything covering it. It was an extra firm mattress and actually felt like hitting a drum.
@Abasuto playing on a concrete or hard wooden surface actually gives decent rebound. It certainly doesn't feel like playing a real drum, but it definately lets you do rolls better
thanks so much for helpng me out..i'm new to drums trying my best,,,thanks again just looking for something simular to it on youtube..this is great by the way thanks
I would suggest a waltz beat...your song is not in 6/8 but 4/4. To figure this out simply count 1-4 and then try 1-6 and you'll see the 1 nor the pulse of your strumming hand will line up at 6/8. Remember that 6/8 sounds very similar to 3/4, and that means triplets...I'm sure you know how different a triplet feels than straight time.
I noticed the sound get a greater depth of frequencies in the low end. If you crank your reso up very tight you should get that "concert" sound even with the standard snares. I tend to have my snares wire tension fairly tight. Try a coated emperor, very full sound.
Close but the difference is in the accent and length of pattern. Instead of counting 1-2-3 having the accent on 1, 6/8 gets counted 1-2-3-4-5-6 with the accent on (1) again but there is more room to add further accents. Mind you the accent doesn't have to be on (1) all the time. All it is really is a longer pattern or phrase.
I guess you've heard Max Roach 'the drums also waltz'. He starts off similar, with the kick and the hat, then adds and adds and then takes you off somewhere
I've been listening to this like all day, The opening lick you play (from the high tom and snare , to floor tom & snare to high tom and snare again) is SO CATCHY! It's going to be stuck in my head all day lol!
You're such a creative drummer, to be able to take 6/8, stay strictly in time and be able to pull off such complex ideas is quite a feat for a normal human being such as myself :P
I've probably said this before, but I LOVE your style of playing so much!! Inspirational Playing friend!!!
Oh yeah! And if you've heard of a drummer called Joe Morello, this solo reminds me of his playing a lot, the way he use to solo in 5/4 with the group still playing behind him in 'Take Five' :)
I'm sure you've heard of him and Dave Brubeck, but if not check him out! He is fantastic!
Can you play anything from Zappa's Joe Garage? I think the drums in, "Outside Now" is 13/6. See what you can do with some Zappa times.

just a question..
How do you tune your toms?
sorry i bet thousands of people have asked you this.

Thanks! Bottom head a little tighter than the top on toms, equal tension top and bottom on floors. Yes, they have :)
