I was there and I remember how bad the sound system was.

I remember Grace - and not just her - were pretty pissed off about that.

Pink Floyd was the closing act and they brought their own equipment which was excellent. Took them a couple of hours to set it up so they were playing Atom Heart Mother while the sun was coming up behind the stage. Good times. :)

Most of the best bands of the late 60's were playing live on equipment that basement and garage bands would be trying to get rid of today. Plus, their monitor systems were either ultra-primitive or non-existent. If you have never performed live in front of 20,000 people with $1500 worth of gear and without being able to hear yourself at all, you aren't qualified to comment on her singing here.

@riderpoet You got that right! Back in the day it was amazing that bands could put on good live shows with the quality of the equipment and sound-systems at the time. You just had to accept the limitations and go with the energy and it all worked out fine.

This Airplane performance should be considered well above average for the time.

I've done enough live rock and roll as both a drummer and a singer to have an amazing amount of respect for what the core bands of the 60's were able to achieve under conditions that NO modern artist would accept for five seconds. For example, I have so much sympathy for Donna Jean Godchaux of the Grateful Dead - who I love on her good nights, by the way. She was singing into an aural black hole - all she could hear was band noise and the roar of the crowd.

I play guitar. It seems the instruments are for some reason tuned a half-tone low. This could account for her vocal problems since her voice was accustomed to singing the song at a different pitch.

For those who don't know, when Grace sang song she was "dusted" with PCP aka Angle Dust, a narcotic loved by black people. The drug was originally used by vets to tranquilize horses years ago. The band was probalby tripping on acid. Yeah, White drones, great people who succumbed to to drugs but lets praise and laud them neverless. The White people of the USA have become sheeple. Fucking drones who vote for a guy like BO. Enjoy your demise.

GRACE IS A GODDESS!!!!! LSD was and is the least of everybody's worries while pregnant, or not. In her autobiography she talks about how absolutely crappy the speakers and monitors were back then. Some venues didn't even have any. As singers know, it's incredibly hard to sing on key when you can't hear yourself. That's why she developed that loud, powerful style. That's why, in this clip, you see her sticking her finger in her ear. It appears she's having a hard time hearing herself here, and that's why she's a little off.

@TheIcedRealm Monitors were pretty much non -existent back then. I know from experience. Really bad when playing in a gym or a stadium. Real theaters were not too bad. Nobody even mic'd instruments until about 69 which is the whole reason the big piggy-back amp configuration came about. You can watch Grace do the same thing at Woodstock but her performance was better then.

I might be wrong there,although I was at that festival ,I sadly missed The Airplane,so I can't judge what's wrong with Slick's performance here.This is a very rare intimate acount of The Airplane at Holland's very own 'Woodstock'.

They were just at the tailend of that horrible year '69 Altamont., etc..So they might sound a bit lost.

the way she sings "pill" the first time is very flat and couldn't hear the second "pill". It took me aback to hear this when she usually is so dynamic. I don't mean to put her down; she always sang phenomenally especially considering the lifestyle (which she writes about) she lived.

It was just a little observation on my part; my niece, who lived that lifestyle didn't make it.

@miraclesbabyx Acid has absolutely no bad health conditions cause it' not toxic to humans.You can't get an acid overdose.Even alcohol or cigarettes are more destructive to health than acid (if it's not mixed with amphetamines or something).Albert Hofmann from Switzerland who discovered and invented LSD was healthy and died at age 102 after he did lots of self experiments.It's a hallucinogen no normal drug.Maybe she did acid even the songs about mushrooms which aren't that strong as pure acid.
