I was there and I remember how bad the sound system was.
I remember Grace - and not just her - were pretty pissed off about that.
Pink Floyd was the closing act and they brought their own equipment which was excellent. Took them a couple of hours to set it up so they were playing Atom Heart Mother while the sun was coming up behind the stage. Good times. :)
Most of the best bands of the late 60's were playing live on equipment that basement and garage bands would be trying to get rid of today. Plus, their monitor systems were either ultra-primitive or non-existent. If you have never performed live in front of 20,000 people with $1500 worth of gear and without being able to hear yourself at all, you aren't qualified to comment on her singing here.
@riderpoet You got that right! Back in the day it was amazing that bands could put on good live shows with the quality of the equipment and sound-systems at the time. You just had to accept the limitations and go with the energy and it all worked out fine.
This Airplane performance should be considered well above average for the time.
@mrsolofeo Thanks. I've done enough live rock and roll as both a drummer and a singer to have an amazing amount of respect for what the core bands of the 60's were able to achieve under conditions that NO modern artist would accept for five seconds. For example, I have so much sympathy for Donna Jean Godchaux of the Grateful Dead - who I love on her good nights, by the way. She was singing into an aural black hole - all she could hear was band noise and the roar of the crowd.
Lmao, the commentary on here is hilarious, have any of you ever done a single psychedelic?? This commentary on here sounds like a bunch of people who only read info and then take it upon themselves to talk about a subject they literally know nothing about, as if they're old seasoned pro's, hahaha. Experience is eveything, this song does a great job at trying to portray this in one way if not others. None the less, gotta love people that try to explain anything they've never gone through ;)
I play guitar. It seems the instruments are for some reason tuned a half-tone low. This could account for her vocal problems since her voice was accustomed to singing the song at a different pitch.
For those who don't know, when Grace sang song she was "dusted" with PCP aka Angle Dust, a narcotic loved by black people. The drug was originally used by vets to tranquilize horses years ago. The band was probalby tripping on acid. Yeah, White drones, great people who succumbed to to drugs but lets praise and laud them neverless. The White people of the USA have become sheeple. Fucking drones who vote for a guy like BO. Enjoy your demise.
I think Grace was perfectly in.....tune !.... with an out of tune band !!...like all great singers who try to accomodate bad tuners-up of their melting instruments ..
GRACE IS A GODDESS!!!!! LSD was and is the least of everybody's worries while pregnant, or not. Prescription painkillers (or synthetic herion, as I refer it to) is by far worse not just for a fetus, but the human condition as well, completely shutting down the third-eye and killing us humans so...Grace is amazing, not stupid and an awesome performer! She make my soul say "Whee!!" ;)
We're spoiled by perfected studio recordings and select live or edited performances and forget that live can be sloppy for many reasons. Mostly because humans make mistakes. And for you armchair quarterbacks who sit safely in your homes typing shit about people putting it on the line while you're afraid to get up off your ass to do more than merely criticize, well, I suggest you just go fuck yourselves and leave live performances to the brave and fearless.
In her autobiography she talks about how absolutely crappy the speakers and monitors were back then. Some venues didn't even have any. As singers know, it's incredibly hard to sing on key when you can't hear yourself. That's why she developed that loud, powerful style. That's why, in this clip, you see her sticking her finger in her ear. It appears she's having a hard time hearing herself here, and that's why she's a little off.
@TheIcedRealm Monitors were pretty much non -existent back then. I know from experience. Really bad when playing in a gym or a stadium. Real theaters were not too bad. Nobody even mic'd instruments until about 69 which is the whole reason the big piggy-back amp configuration came about. You can watch Grace do the same thing at Woodstock but her performance was better then.
I liked the performance the first time I heard it, but when I listen carefully...sound was not the best!! There are better versions, like the Monterrey one...
Yea, I caught that too. Also notice the look on Jorma's face. Somewhere between great annoyance and concern. The rest of the band look rather annoyed as well. You can really see the end coming for them in this performance.
There's nothing wrong with her performance or 'state', 0:24 is just normal intense band interaction, his guitar wasn't responding, that.'s why the 'jarring'.
You are wrong. And you are rude. If you think this is Grace's way of performing you missed a lot. I love Grace Slick and I'm grateful that she is still with us.
In my idea Kaukonen acted like you or me would do, when you're anoyed about something. you stare at somebody with that 'what the F....' stare in your face.
I might be wrong there, although I was at that festival ,I sadly missed The Airplane,so I can't judge what's wrong with Slick's performance here. This is a very rare intimate acount of The Airplane at Holland's very own 'Woodstock'.
They were just at the tailend of that horrible year '69 Altamont., etc..So they might sound a bit lost.
Enlighten me please in what's wrong with Slick's performance here ?
the way she sings "pill" the first time is very flat and couldn't hear the second "pill". It took me aback to hear this when she usually is so dynamic. I don't mean to put her down; she always sang phenomenally especially considering the lifestyle (which she writes about) she lived.
It was just a little observation on my part; my niece, who lived that lifestyle didn't make it.

Grace is pregnant with her daughter China here, she was born in January 1971, so yeah she was pregnant. Not too good to be doing acid when your pregnant...
maybe she was having morning sickness... on a different time zone... hey in those days everybody did a lot of stupid things during pregnancy, just due ignorance I guess.
@geochaosakanick Hey Grace planned to get pregnate . She told Paul Kantner that she wanted his child so when she was trying to get pregnate and when she did get pregnate she was sober and I am sure she wasn't doing acid or coke. She said in her autobiography that she stayed sober until she was donee breast feeding her daughter China who is healthy.
@miraclesbabyx Acid has absolutely no bad health conditions cause it' not toxic to humans. You can't get an acid overdose.Even alcohol or cigarettes are more destructive to health than acid (if it's not mixed with amphetamines or something).Albert Hofmann from Switzerland who discovered and invented LSD was healthy and died at age 102 after he did lots of self experiments. It's a hallucinogen no normal drug.Maybe she did acid even the songs about mushrooms which aren't that strong as pure acid.
@Sand3rB As I recall Alice in Wonderland, didn't a bite of one mushroom make Alice tall? and a bite of another make her small? Hmm. Or were those effects in another scene (not with the hookah-smoking caterpillar on a large mushroom) where on a table was a cake labeled "Eat me," and a pitcher or glass "Drink me" ... .
@Sand3rB Dear Sand3rB, I'm sorry but your answer is only half-eaay true.If you listen closely it'sng. the pure tune in turn on and drop out-song.Of course it's laid on Alice's Wonderland and the white rabbit and so on but did you know that there were acid trips with the white rabbit on it.Listen to the lyrics it's pure acid-music.Or what mushroom is meant to FREE YOUR HEAD you think? Take a look on what @miraclebabyx.It's absolutely true-pure acid isn't toxic to humans (check wikipedia)-peace
@rentalife Absolutely correct !! Although it may be the most powerful drug for brain or attitude or new sights and beliefs or whatever. If it's not mixed with amphetamine or something else it's absolutely not toxic for humans (even it kills elephants). All I can say is that people should read wikipedia Albert Hofman or read his book LSD-my child of sorrow..(German translation from his book LSD-Mein Sorgenkind). It's all described good and bad experiences with the HALLUCINOGEN what should be told.

@redspraypaint8 yes she was on acid you can see it in her eyes the big discs! But that was the time everyone took lsd, and its not as toxic as u might think.
