This was Mark and the band at the pinnacle. This was one of the greatest songs of the punk movement and noone even ever heard it.. Such an unappreciated song by an underdog of a band.. He showed them all.
I nearly got the crap beaten out of me in high school for admitting I liked DEVO...
This MUST be shown to people who think of DEVO as a 1-hit wonder, much less that "Whip It" even comes close to encasing what they are as a band. There's really not "one song" that can define DEVO. "Jocko Homo" or "Freedom Of Choice" I guess do the job somewhat.
@Bowler6611 Most people dont understand the lyrics to the songs and Devo fed off of that! If you dont know what Devo is saying you are a blockhead! Were all Devo!
Damn! Look how Mark controls the stage! Just stares straight ahead, then grimaces like a 10-year-old throwing a tantrum ("I can't take it no more!") and you've just got to watch. Amazing.
Jerry Casale has a great story of when DEVO played SNL and he was going to celebrate by doing coke (for the first time?). After the show John Belushi came in to his dressing room to say "hi" and Jerry offered him some. Belushi snorted the whole thing and left Jerry with the empty vial, lol.
The song gets better every time I hear it. I know they're a lot older now, but if they had just a fraction of the energy they did when this was shot, I'd probably follow them around the country.
I am a man and I am not DEVO.....but I know who is. YouTube has allowed me to re-discover this and other great old bands. Know what I mean? I've got a gut feeling that you do.
